Travis Tritt once sang a song called "Ten Feet Tall and Bulletproof", and if American Idol 4 has a country theme this year then it should be the song choice for Scott Savol. Every week the media (including us) writes that this is probably going to be Scott’s last week, and every week Scott is safe. Scott has survived being negatively portrayed as standoffish during the early stages of the competition and having a previous arrest for domestic violence revealed at a critical point in the competition. Tuesday night, Scott even took a swipe at the very American Idol voters who are voting for him by saying there were millions of people at home that didn’t have the nerve to do what he was doing. Yet, Scott still remains. We’re beginning to think Scott Savol really might be invincible.
Scott Savol is walking, talking proof of the old saying that all press is good press. While there were those that were turned off by his arrest record, there were also those that respected the fact that he learned from his mistake and was honest about it to American Idol producers. After all Mario Vazquez went running for some mysterious personal reasons, while Scott Savol stood strong and bravely faced his past.
Scott also rarely has two poor performances in a row. One week Scott might sound like the worst singer still in the competition, and the next week he surprises everyone with a great performance. His outspoken personality and his ability to bounce back after an off week have helped Scott to build an almost cult like following. He has become the hero for everyone who has made mistakes, everyone who has failed, everyone who has gone through hard times, and then gotten back up, dusted themselves off, and made a success out of their lives. Odds are that Scott will come under even more attacks for surviving while singers that many regarded as more talented are being sent home. However, Scott shouldn’t be blamed for being a survivor and all such criticism will probably only make him stronger in the eyes of his fans.
