Save the Rocker! Bo Bice Comes Under Fire for Previous Drug Arrests.

April 28, 2005 07:49 PM by Joe Blackmon

Last night American Idol viewers saw one of the rockers eliminated from the competition.  Before American Idol fans could even come to terms with losing Constantine Maroulis, TheSmokingGun.com took aim at the only other rocker in the competition.  According to TheSmokingGun.com, Bo Bice has two previous arrests for drug possession.  In June of 2001, Bo was arrested for felony cocaine possession. In July of 2003, Bo was arrested for marijuana possession, public intoxication, and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Both drug possession charges were dismissed as part of Bo entering into a drug diversion program.

Bo Bice is the second American Idol 4 contestant to have a previous arrest record exposed by TheSmokingGun.com.  In late March of this year, TheSmokingGun.com reported on a felony domestic violence arrest in Scott Savol’s background.  Just as in the case of Scott Savol, American Idol producers have stated that Bo Bice was very forthcoming to them about his previous arrest record.  Bo Bice is not at risk for elimination from the competition because he was honest about his past.

Bo Bice has hinted several times on the American Idol show that he lived a somewhat wild life during his rock and roll days, so his previous drug arrests should not come as a complete surprise.  When news of Scott’s arrest broke, we stated that it would be a shame to see a mistake from his past affect his American Idol chances.  We believe that the same should hold true for Bo Bice.  American Idol producers are taking a lot of heat for allowing Scott Savol and Bo Bice into the competition, but when did it become written in America that no one gets second chances.  America is built on the very founding principal of being a land of opportunity.

The measure of a man is often not how far he falls but how he responds after he has fallen.  Bo Bice went into a diversion program and got treatment.  Bo has since become an active member of a church and has been a friend to many in need.  Life is about choices.  After Bo’s drug arrests, he made a choice to get help and turn his life around.  Now, Bo Bice is right in the middle of competing on the most popular show on television.  It’s no wonder that Bo always acts surprised to still be there.  He has the humility to realize exactly how far he has come.  Bo Bice is living proof that if you make a commitment to better your life, then great things can happen.  Bo Bice is hope for everyone who has ever believed in second chances.  American Idol needs Bo Bice.  We’ve already lost one rocker on American Idol 4.  Let’s make sure we don’t lose another.

Omigosh! I had no idea. Bo does seem sober when he is on the show, but I never thought that it was a new lifestyle.

Thankgoodness that Bo was honest about his past arrests when auditioning for the show, or we would lose a great contestant. A rocker that is a church member- Wow. Impressive. I respect Bo for turning his life around after such an ordeal. Having such a strong heart is a great characteristic. Maybe having the strength to turn his life around successfully gave him the abundant amount of confidence he has on stage.

What a wonderful article! Couldn’t have said it better myself. We all made mistakes, learned from them and moved on. If America holds Bo’s mistakes against him they must be enjoying the view from their glass houses.

I am a huge Constantine and Bo fan. My heart was broken when Constantine was voted off Wednesday night. Then when I heard on Friday about Bo’s arrest, I was sure he was either going to get booted or it was going to discourage people from voting for him. I was really on the verge of never watching American Idol again, but then I read your article. Your article is the first one that makes a point of the person that Bo is now. All the other articles I read just talk about the arrest and make is sound like Bo is a current drug user. But your article makes it clear that this is in Bo’s past. It really brightened my whole day. I’ve decided that I am going to keep watching American Idol now. If for no other reason, than so I can keep voting for Bo. Go Bo Bice!

Personally, I’m fed up with the screeching from rockers. There’s enough of that stuff out there. Let’s get a wholesome, all American idol who america can be proud of. It’s not just ‘the young’ that listen to music in this world. As I see it, either Carrie or Anthony should become the Idol. Let’s get a good, clean, on tune, ‘hairless’ voice on a CD for a change!!!!!!! Both Carrie and Anthony fit that bill in my opinion.

I totally have my favorites, carrie and bo.
Living less than 3o minutes away from carrie who would vote for her she is representing my home state. And just because someone might have a rough past doesn’t mean that they are still doing the same, I think Bo rocks. And so yeah, GO CARRIE AND BO!!

I feel SO bad for Bo right now, just having someone dig this up RIGHT AFTER he just lost his closest friend in the competition. I mean,Wednesday night,he looked like he couldn’t decide if he wanted to cry or kill someone after losing Constantine AND his chance to face off with him in the big rocker finale that should’ve been. And then the very next day, before he even had a chance to recover from that, this came up. I mean,i thought there was supposed to be a rule about not kicking someone when they’re already down. It’s so sad. And if this “conspiracy” stuff is really true,i hope no one tries to pull something like that on him because I’d really love to see him win this thing.Of course,if he doesn’t,I’m sure we’ll still be seeing him around, though, because I wouldn’t doubt if Constantine would get him a deal at Koch Records too.Maybe SugarMoney and Pray for the Soul of Betty could even tour together someday. That would be cool. But,in any case,I wish him the best of luck and hope he has a really bright future and can leave his dark past in the past, where it belongs.

Bo is talented. I’d rather have someone win that tried a few drugs than someone who hit the mother of his baby. . .

Now I feel even worse for Bo because he just lost his other bud and the only person who could’ve really understood.

PS I love the comment about the “glass houses”.

I have never met Bo, but I do know the church family that he has joined. It doesn’t suprise me that he has turned his life around or that he has been accepted by this church as he is. Pastor Donny Acton is a remarkable man of compassion, understanding and conviction. His wife Mindy, the Board of Elders, and the congregation itself is one the most loving and supportive groups you’ll find anywhere.
They will stand behind Bo as they have from the first day he darkened their door. It’s their way, they don’t know how to love half way or how to support only a little. No matter what the future holds for Bo, and I believe it holds a LOT!, he has a soft place to land at New Hope.

Hi, I am from Sydney Australia and in my family, we LOVE American Idol. Being the mum and all I have been a devoted BO fan from the beginning, I have 2 teenage sons, 21 and 19 y.o. therefore I know the ups and downs that these early years can bring through exploring the ‘unknown’, or experimentation they say. As long as their character, morals and ethics remain strong, and they make the RIGHT CHOICES, then why crucify them for their learning curves of life? Bo is no different to any other STAR who was tempted within that type of industry however was wise enough to pull himself out of it and make it RIGHT for himself. I admire him now even more!! I wish we could vote….I would spend what little I have to make sure my vote counts for BO. His eyes have a humble demanour and the fact that he ‘came clean’ to the Idol producers ascertain he is a person with dignity. I really hope that he does become AMERICA’S IDOL. If you ever have time BO, send us a note will ya? With lots of love from Down Under – MARISSA.

I have been watching American Idol every year. I thought when Clay won, there would never be another contestant like him again. I was wrong. Bo and Constantine are very much like Clay, Very good voices and the best on-stage demeanor I have ever seen. When I heard that Constantine was booted, I knew that this American Idol is just a game that the producers and that “Simon” will push cirtian people through to the end, from the begining. I really think that Scott should have been thrown out a long time ago, especially when he was voted the bottom three with, I think was Niko, And when Niko was voted off, you can see how concieded Scott was. Not even a sorry, handshake, or a look. He just walks away with “I am GREAT” with his hands up in the air. No, I am not bashing Scott, I just think that there was a huge WRONG done to Constantine. As for BO, GO BO!!!
Maybe I will continue to watch A.I. if Bo stays in for the last two!

I am from England, and have been watching American Idol 4 from the beginning. First thing I would like to say is I was rooting for Bo!!! Scott should have gone long befor Constantine, that must have been a set up. Scott, Niko and Anthony should have gone before Nadia and Bo should have WON!!! His past is his past and obviously a lot of America felt the same. Good on Bo for turning his life around. It takes a strong person to realise his problem and do something about it. Bo will be HUGE. Much bigger than Carrie. Although shes is very talented country singers are 10 a penny. But she fits the type cast of an “idol”. I am still in love with Bo and think I always will be!!! BO ROCKS.
