American Idol Final – Was It Fair?

May 24, 2005 11:05 PM by Joe Blackmon

B0_carrie_finalSome Bo Bice fans are angry that Carrie Underwood seems to have gotten the better deal in her original song “Angels Brought Me Here.”  In fact, Carrie’s song wasn’t an original at all, but “Angels Brought Me Here” was previously released by Australian Idol Guy Sebastian.  Carrie Underwood was essentially given a song that was a hit song in Australia for her original song, while Bo Bice was given a true original song that was completely untested.

Bo Bice started out with the original song “The Long, Long Road.”  Paula pointed out that it “was really hard singing a song that nobody knows.”  Simon said Bo “looked like his chemistry teacher” and sang a “very dreary song.”  Carrie Underwood started out with the song “Inside Your Heaven.”  Even though Randy Jackson called the first half of Carrie’s song pitchy, he said she brought it home in the end.  Simon said the song was much better than the first song and called round one for Carrie.

On the second song selection where the contestants were allowed to choose their favorites, Bo Bice seemed to come out ahead of Carrie Underwood.  Bo gave an incredible performance of “Vehicle,” and Carrie gave a strong performance of “Independence Day.”  Randy and Paula praised both singers, but Simon called round two for Bo.

On the last song, Bo sang “Inside Your Heaven,” which had been Carrie’s first song.  Randy put Bo forever in his dog pound again, and Paula said Bo made her “fall in love with the song.”  Simon Cowell told Bo that his performance of the song was better than Carrie’s verson.  Carrie sang the supposedly original song “Angels Brought Me Here” for her last song.  Randy gave Carrie “the dog standing up”, and Simon said “I think you’ve done enough to win the competition.”  Reality TV Magazine readers pointed out to us that Simon had said Bo did better both on “Inside Your Heaven” and on the contestant’s favorite songs, but yet he still called the competition for Carrie based on her performance on the original song.

Ryan Seacrest ended the show with the comment that last week less than 2% separated the votes of Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood.  The voting tonight could be even closer, as both Bo and Carrie had fairly equal performances.  This American Idol season has been filled with controversy as it has often times seemed like American Idol producers have been doing everything short of subliminal messages to hand the competition to Carrie Underwood.  Both performers are very talented, but if Carrie Underwood wins it will probably cause many to believe that the “fix was in.”

I thought it was unfair ,because it was Guys original song and Simon knew it ,he sang it on American Idol last year,,,

I think it would be unfair – if one was given an untried song and the other a No. 1 hit song in Australia (when it was the fastest selling single in Australia), Asia and New Zealand.

That has to give Carrie a definite advantage and didn’t her very best friend Anthony sing Climb Every Mountain – Guy’s big song in the Australian Idol Comp?

Several British publications reported this past weekend that Carrie Underwood had won the competition……………..the fix is in. Bo got robbed last night, we’ll see where this goes………….

Giving Carrie this song was not unfair. In Season 2, Ruben’s song Flying Without Wings was also NOT an original song. It was a big hit by a group in England. Clay’s song was the only original song of the night. Doesn’t really matter Ruben won and Bo will too.

Just so you know, Bo was 1,00000000000 X better than Carrie. Yes, asked me 6 weeks ago, I would have said Carrie all the way. But she signs terrible in the beginning of each song and knocks it out at the end. Where Bo, he gives is 1,000 % from beginning to end. BO ALL THE WAY. HE IS MY AMERICAN IDOL AND I WILL BE SEEING HIM IN JULY.

Sounds like this whole thing has been rigged for Carrie by Simon the whole competition. Maybe someone will be able to bring out any prejudice that goes on with AI.

I am a fan of Guy Sebastian, the Australian Idol who has “Angels Brought Me Here” in his CD. Carrie sang that song really really really awfully bad last night. Guy must be feeling so bad … lol. If Carrie wins, results was definitely rigged!

Last night was a huge dissapointment. The producers all but ruined what was set up to be a GREAT evening.

There has been chatter that this season was the Best Idol ever. After last night, Season 2 will remain as the Season to beat!

And yes, Carrie will win, because that is how the script has read all season!

I feel bad for both of them because they were both sick last night. Bo had food poisoning and Carrie had an ear infection.

I think they both will do great regardless who wins. Sure is better than last year and that screaming Fantasia. If ever it was fixed, it was with her.

Bo will do great win or loose. I personally think he would be better off not winning. Clay did way better than Ruben. Being tied to that AI contract has it’s downside.

Bo knows who he is and all he needed for his career was this exposure.
Carrie could do with the extra help, she is still young and will certainly improve with time. Bo has the experience Carrie doesn’t have. Bo has it made, win or loose. As does Carrie.
She is a great singer and will only get better with age and experience.

So, best of luck to both of them with their careers.

There’s nothing ‘original’ about Carrie singing ‘Angels Brought Me Here’. The song has already been a huge hit for the first Australian Idol Guy Sebastian. It broke sales records in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Thousands of copies have also been sold in North America mainly through word of mouth because Sony/BMG didn’t get off their arses and release it there. The hypocrisy in all of this is that Guy Sebastian sang the song on American Idol last year when he was a guest on the show and that has not been acknowleged by anyone. I think Carrie did a creditable version of the song…but to even think of releasing it as an original is ludicrous. Release it by all means…but release it as what it is…a COVER VERSION! And by the way…Randy Jackson seems to have a very short memory. At the time of Guy Sebastian’s Idol win he was praising Guy’s album (with the original version of ‘Angels Brought Me Here’) all over the place….now he doesn’t remember Guy or Guy singing on AI. Does the audience of American Idol also have the same poor memory? I hope not…Guy’s version deserves to be get a go in the US. Give credit where credit is due. YES…Carrie did a pretty good version of the song…BUT Guy Sebastian’s is the only ‘original’ version

I am actually not upset that Bo didn’t win. He is definitely not the typical “American Idol” fluff that we all knew was going to be chosen from the very first auditions this year. Bo wasn’t someone that the AI machine could mold into a processed pop star and Carrie was exactly that. I’m extremely happy for Carrie, I think she has worked very hard to win this competition and in the end, she was the best one to win. Bo Bice is an extremely talented man who will become a star by his own merit, not because of American Idol. I look forward to seeing him around, but I can’t deny that I am going to absolutely miss seeing him perform every week. Good Luck to them both. The best one for American Idol won. The one that has the most ability to become a star with their own music was named runner up.

Carrie cannot harmonize and she struggles with songs that are not country. Bo was the better all around singer. Simon has picked the idol each time this is very fisshy to me.

  24. Carrie S. Says:
    May 25th, 2005 at 10:40 pm

I am so happy with the results of AI this year. I think that both will have great careers in the music industry, but Carrie has an amazing voice and I think that she deserved to win. And this whole idea of it being fixed because Simon said that she would win? Well, let’s not forget that he also told Bo that it was his contest to lose. You can complain about the results all you want, but Simon says those things because HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT! You forget that he has been in the music industry for over 20 years. Give the man some credit…he knows talent when he sees it, and he obviously saw it in Carrie!!! And to whoever said that Carrie struggles with non-country music obviously forgets how she ROCKED on Heart’s “Alone”! So, if you don’t like the results…vote!!!! Obviously Carrie is who America wanted to win…otherwise she would not have won!!

There is nothing like a long haired, head flicking, flip flop wearing, shaky voice wannabe trying to win. Carrie definitely has the better voice. You might like to say that it was unfair to have Carrie sing that song but here in Vegas, we’ve never even heard of the Australian Idol or that song. I doubt that Carrie did either. I do agree though that Bo has better stage presence but Carrie has the voice hands down.

I must agree with the above statement. The show is called “American Idol” for a reason. Do we really want our American Idol, the person we look up to and stands as a spokesperson for our country to be somebody who used/uses cocaine? GO CARRIE! You won for a reason!!!

  29. Tom Says:

OK Folks, just for the record, the fix is ALWAYS in so it doesn’t really matter. Have you ever tried to call in a vote? The lines are constantly busy because the number of votes max them out.

Here’s why that’s relevant, if you have a huge amount of Carrie Fans and a huge amount of Bo fans and they are all trying to call at the same time the determining factor is going to be pretty random (probably determined by timing and who’s phone is closer to the place where the calls are actually taken)and it isn’t going to matter who had more fans.

Have you noticed that every time(since season 2) they mention results it’s always around 1 or 2%?

The system really doesn’t work, you might as well just flip a coin to decide.

WAY TO GO CARRIE I don’t think it was any particular selection whether original or not or comments by the judges that caused the majority to vote for carrie. I think the majority voted for who they would like to go see at a concert. It was a very easy decision for me.

Just to clarify, yes, Bo was arrested for possession. However, there are 3 more words you should add to that: IN HIS PAST. Bo cleaned up, went to treatment, and is a born-again Christian. Being from Bo’s hometown, I can say, he is the furthest thing away from a “druggie”. Don’t knock him just because he has long hair.

Bo truly is a good singer. However, Carrie is much more marketable to AI because she has less music experience and…I hate to say this..but it more easily controlled (that’s what happens with the AI contract). Bo will have much more freedom with his album, and it will sell.

I am proud of Bo, and I am happy for Carrie. They were both wonderful. And if Bo put out an album where he sang commercial jingles, I would probably buy it. That’s what it comes down to, folks… win or lose, their albums will still sell.

I am totally smitten with Bo Bice! He is an amazing vocalist! He has this quality in his voice, deep and grovely, that just stirs an audience!! Talk about bringing people to their feet! Bo has been my favorite since the show started because he is consistantly awesome, and can sing whatever is thrown in his direction. He is an authentic talent! Fine, let Carrie have the title, and be churned out as a run-of-the-mill singer, she’s like a watered-down version of Kelly. There are tons of “Carries” out there, sweet, cute and completely boring. Better that Bo is in the hands of Clive, so his true, original talent can shine through! We’ll just see whose album does better…Love ya Bo!!!!!

Good Luck to Carie and Bo.

    I am thoroughly disappointed.
Bo had much more talent. Carrie very often sang off key. She really is just another
‘run of the mill’ country singer. What’s unique about her. In interviews Carrie showed no personality. Bo was oozing with personality. I know he will go onto bigger and better things. AI is rigged, I am sure.
Simon Cowell & his offsiders had already predefined who was going to win. After all, wake up! there is millions & millions & millions of dollars in it for the producers etc. etc. of this show.

The song Carrie sang was indeed not original, several months ago in our supermarkets, record & major department stores, Guy Sebastian was belting out this song. It’s all a pack of lies.

Wake up American … the show is rigged and every time you dial up you are making the likes of Simon etc. richer than they already are. They don’t care about you…Simon was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He is a smart arse, was one when he was a boy and is still one!

She sang rock songs great but the darn judges forces her to keep her country girl image and now is totally labeled “the boring country girl”.
Talk about “soooo typical”….and Bo isn’t??? He was original?? Put him next to Constantine, and they look like any other loud drug abusing alcoholic heavy metal band member that reminds me of nothing but negative toxic music.
Carrie proved that she was up there to sing and that she wasn’t just another pretty blond!
People are upset because they think she has a “typical” look, but they are more upset that she has looks AND can sing! They’re just a bunch of jealous rugrats!
Congrats Carrie!!! My voting didn’t go to waste!! I picked you from Day 1!!!! YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No wonder that song keep bugging me throughout the show. I know I’ve heard it before. It’s a huge disadvantage to Bo and yes, it’s not fair for him. Carrie can sing, I admit that but when it comes to the overall performances, I think Bo should be the one the win it. I haven’t been a Bo fan before (still in love with Constantine!) but I do think that Bo is far better than Carrie in the finals.

  41. Larry Says:
    May 26th, 2005 at 10:33 am

Was it “Fair”? Depends on your interpretation of “fair.” Was it fair that Carrie won, probably. She is a talented singer. I think Bo would have been just as deserving, but I don’t begrudge Carrie her due. What was really unfair was the way Fox let us down by having them singing songs in their hour of glory that did not showcase either contestant’s talents. This should have been a no holds barred, pull out all the stops performance of a lifetime to put a fitting cap on the season. Instead we were let down with mediocre performances that fell way short of their indidividual bests during the regular season. What was Fox thinking by making them sing those two “original” messes? They were not only poor songs to interject into a contest, but they certainly were not songs that someone would be inclined to run out and purchase. What was the point?

  42. Jan Says:

  44. Irina Says:
    May 26th, 2005 at 12:46 pm

Wow, I didn’t even know that the song Carrie sang wasn’t an original. It was obvious that the show was set up for Carrie to win. If it wasn’t rigged, than it gave Carrie the advantage of the songs. It was obvious that the songs picked out for Bo were not suitable for him. Although it doesn’t matter what Bo sings because he is always flawless, “The Long Long Road” and “Inside your Heaven” are not the most favorable choices for Bo. Even given that, Bo sang the Hell out of Carrie on “Inside your Heaven”. Now it is obvious that most Americans cannot distinguish between sugar coated antics and raw talent. I’m even relieved that Bo didn’t win because it suits his character more, now he can be the rebel that he is and prove himself without being tied to American Idol. I look forward to seeing Bo go platinum with his future record. You Rock Bo!

I’m glad Carrie won. Bo and Carrie were both great competitors, both very talented and America definitely had the final 2 nailed. It’s ridiculous that people think the show was rigged or whatnot, I guess making up excuses like that makes some people feel better?? Who knows… America voted Carrie the winner, fair and square… let’s move on….
HOWEVER… If you want to b**ch and moan about an AI winner, lets talk about last season’s Fantasia…. that has been the only season of AI where the the winner left me (and many people) boggled… my dogs barking and howling is more appealing to the ear than Fantasia’s screaming/singing!! OK that was mean, but seriously… Has anyone ever heard her song(s) on the radio?? I live in LA and still haven’t EVER heard her!!

  48. CookyMonzta Says:
    May 26th, 2005 at 4:23 pm

The reason you have not heard Fantasia on the radio is because you are not listening to the appropriate radio station. Most of her songs play on R&B radio, for which “Truth Is” reached number 2 on that chart, with “Free Yourself” poised to make the R&B top 10. Her album is now certified double-platinum.

Giving the credit where the credit is due is exactly what American Idol should have done.
Carrie Underwood is really talented but we also have to accept that Bo Bice is way more talented that she is.
Remembering the night when Carrie didn’t perform that well, they made all the contestant’s number as Carrie’s knowing perfectly well that there will be some who’ll make that mistake and vote for Carrie.
If they really want to know who America’s Idol is, they should do it fair and square.
But then, let’s not cry over spilled milk, instead, let’s make sure that we’ll support Bo Bice for what Carrie won last night is mere title, that’s all! We know the truth and that’s more important. Let’s support Bo Bice with his upcoming album, it will assure Bo a platinum and success he truly deserves.
Because we ALL know for a fact that Bo Bice is the real deal…

This had to be the closest competition for ai ever. The final three were all extremely talented. And in the final competition it was so close that no matter who won close to half of America was going to be upset with the results. In the long run all of the contestants will prosper from the exposure so it really didn’t make that much difference who was named the winner. Just to keep the comments here on the fair side, I thought Carrie was the best singer in the competition from the first week the final twelve began, and she continued to show that this was true through the end, even though she was strongly challenged in the end by sharp improvements by Vonzell, and more experienced and dynamic performances by Bo. But in the end, as the judges kept reminding everyone through this whole season, it is a singing competition, and while i enjoyed Bo’s performances immensely, I think the best singer won. And even if she hadn’t, there are no losers here, they will both go on to have successfull careers with their own styles of music. There are a lot of fans out there with a lot of different tastes in music. Give the crying foul crap a break, somebody had to lose, sorry it was Bo, but that’s what happen if you have to name one winner.

the finale was not for Bo whether it was rigged or not. It’s true that Carrie has won the AI based on her so-called pure voice and personna, but all the way, Bo has shown us it takes a lot of of gut and talent to sing songs that are not suitable for you, and he did it tremendously well!!!It’s not fair to say that AI was rigged or Simon has rooted for Carrie all the way. As far as i’m corcerned, both Randy and Paula loved him and the audience really DIG him…surely i couldn’t vote for Bo as I’m from Malaysia…but whatever you Americans voted, it’s your vote, and I respected that. You have chosen Carrie over Bo to be the winner and so she’ll be…her album will be quite a hit among country and western music lovers but i’m pretty sure that Bo will outsell her mainly because she is proned to sing whatever song she has to while Bo can have all the freedom he wanted to write and sing songs based on his favourite. You have an idol in both of them. But for me as far as i’m concerned, Bo still rocks!!!!Still felt that pain when Ryan announced Carrie not Bo but who the hell cares!!!We all know who was, still and will be the idol. Many have been talking about Bo’s past coke arrest and how it has affected his winning chances. But the past is history…what can we say about that. For him to admit his arrestment and to willingly went to rehab is a true honesty and takes a lot of guts. Even most of the singers do take coke. How about Bob Marley (just an example)? But we still love his performances. How about Reagen. He was an actor but he has been an outstanding president during his time. Nobody could tell someone based on his past. Experience makes us a better person and so Bo is right now. Wonder if Carrie was convicted for something bad in her past…hmmm.. For me, Bo is the true American Idol not just for his god-gifted voice, talent and performances but also for his courageous battle with drugs. This should be set as an example for all…hurrah for BO BICE!!!!

Been mesmerised by Carrie since her first audition. No doubt Bo rocks… and a real good performer but it is all just entertaining. Period.

Carrie on the other hand has the alluring aura and she has got the X factor which is what an American Idol is all about. She has got the magnetising effect that draws you without you knowing. Beat that.

    With love from Singapore

Carrie has the whole package, and they can mold her. Bo is better off, he is not owned by Ai and he can just be BO. He will out sell and out shine her. Do you think he will release his version of Inside your Heaven. I NEED IT!!

Forget Bo (difficult) and Carrie (for me, easy.) This show has some serious problems. Their program credits that go by so swiftly claim they ‘reserve the right to discard votes.’ The FCC will probably rule soon (again) on whether or not this is a game show (prizes) or an entertainment show. If entertainment they can do pretty much as they please. If a game show, they better stop tossing out votes unless
    1. They explain why they tossed them.
    2. They tell viewers how many they tossed.
    3. They tell viewers which contestant lost them.
Over on the AI forum you will find dozens of people (possibly hundreds) who claim they will never vote again. Threads that discuss voting problems directly usually get deleted quickly.

simon cowell rigged the final show for carrie,it was extremely obvious from the very start.Bo did a much better performance than carrie.he can bring the house down which carrie cannot do.Plus bo’s versatility is more apparent. He can sing rock songs, ballads, love songs etc while carrie’s voice fits only the country genre.Let her dish out some rock ballads or even simple pop songs and lets see how awful she will sound.Bo is the real epitome of what an American IDOL should be,talented, mature, humble, extreme charm and the ability to grasp an audience and bring them to their feet.Bravo Bo!Good luck and we cant wait for all your cd’s to come out!

Just want to clear up a few things-
“You might like to say that it was unfair to have Carrie sing that song but here in Vegas, we’ve never even heard of the Australian Idol or that song.”
If you’ve never heard of Guy Sebastian…then maaaan you’ve never heard real music before….he has THE voice…anything to rival your american idol wannabes
and some aussie said Angels Brought Me Here wasn’t a big hit in Australia…like hell it wasn’t! It’s only the highest selling single of all time!!!! Get your facts right!

i agree that both performers are really good. im a huge Carrie fan but i dont think that Bo is awful. it’s just a matter of giving respect and credit to the person who won. Bo and Carrie did all their best to own that stage, or else they wouldnt be on the last two spots. even if Bo didnt win, he’ll do great. it just so happened that Carrie won the competition. she still has a lot to learn and a lot of exposures to have and Ai would help her with that. and what if she’s into country? that’s where her heart is and that’s what she is. that’s what brought her to Ai. somebody can sing what he/she doesn’t want and still can earn a lot of money. but she just wanted to stick on her roots. even if doesnt sell multiplatinum cds, as long as she’s happy with she’s doing, she wouldnt really care.

i am for Carrie and i do hope that people respect her winning the Ai title. she just worked for it, and she just earned it. Bo congratulated her and respected her for winning, and people should do the same.

RESPECT people. even a 2year old knows that (unless he is not taught how to).

I am a HUGE BO BICE fan but I am glad he didn’t win…Then AI would have tried to ‘KEN’ him up into what they wanted liked they’ll do with Carrie…This way he can KEEP IT REAL…She’s young enough that a bit of outside influence couldn’t hurt, but he is SO HOT that he doesn’t need it…I can’t wait to hear more…I also hope to hear him with his own band…I’ve heard just snickets of thier music but WOW…thier GOOD!!!SO even though it was rigged…I still think he got the best deal!!!GO BO!!!

Guy Sebastian’s Australian Idol winner’s song “Angels Brought Me Here” was Australia’s highest selling single. I loved that song so much and then Carrie went and sang it on American Idol and ruined it. Guy Sebastian is so much better than any of your pathetic American Idols. ALL of the American Idols have really bad/pitchy voices, whereas Guy Sebastian (Australian Idol 2003) and Casey Donovan (Australian Idol 2004) have perfect voices. AMERICAN IDOL IS OVERRATED AND AUSTRALIAN IDOL IS FAR MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN AMERICAN IDOL!!!! American Idol IS STUPID!

I think the producers of american idol wanted carrie to win and they stopped at nothing to cheat bo. The reason carrie won was of her last ”stolen song” simon told her she did enough to win but really didnt.

Angels Brought Me Here was the fastest selling song in Australia when it was released and also the highest selling. Now it is by Anthony Callea (runner-up of season 2 aus idol) who is like Clay in which he is more successful than the winner of idol, with his rendition of The Prayer. Carrie should not have been allowed to sing that song or at least, Bo should’ve been given similar opportunities.

I’m only here because a google brought me. But the comment by an Elizabeth that “Angels Brought me Here” WASN’T a huge hit in Australia, sung by the first Australian Idol Guy Sebastian shows just what this competition does. Of course it was a huge hit. It still holds the record for the fastest single sales in the first week for a in original song in Australia (other than Elton John’s Candle in the Wind for Princess Diana) – and THAT is only because it was a limited edition. They pressed only around 280,000 or so and that was it. The album came out the week after and they wanted the sales for that. and THAT album sold a touch of 7 platinum – for Australia thats awesome. Have a look at the alexa marketing site & you’ll see just who does what, where. Guy Sebastian is a musical freak, & I hope one day US get a personal dose. His US Idol performance, after racing around & finally making it with 2 hours to spare, is NOTHING to what he’s really like. see youtube

The comment by Elizabeth that ‘Angels brought me here’ was not a hit in Australia for Guy Sebastian is ridiculous. It went 4 times platnium. Guy also sang this song on American Idol in 2004. I believe he is the only idol contestant from outside America on be asked to perform on American Idol. His web site in the last month has consistantly outranked Kelly Clarksons’ web site in world rankings.Check out Alexa.com which measures global web traffic. He is one of the most talented singers in the world. If you don’t know who he is now, you will soon.Check out some of his brilliant performances on Youtube, or visit his web site Guysebastian.com.au You wont be disappointed.

Google must be logging into this one.I’ve just come across here, too. I don’t know much about Guy Sebastian or Carrie – before this year. But I was holidaying in Australia and was taken to see Guy Sebastian in concert by my friends, who kept telling me about him. I was sceptical – rabid fans etc.
WHAT is this man doing still in Australia? Why isn’t he released overseas? He must be 2nd only to RObbie Williams in stage presence, and his charisma is wholly fascinating. As for the voice! He tantalised gently, he poured everything out, he was an imp, a satyr, a powerhouse and a gentle lover AND he rocked! The most versatile artist I have ever had the privilege of seeing. I hope he comes soon to London (forget the US and Asia, Guy)
