Brat Camp Contestants Announced

June 12, 2005 11:03 PM by Joe Blackmon

What would you do with a teen who curses at you, breaks the law in your house and doesn’t listen to anything you say? That’s the dilemma facing nine families dealing with out-of-control teenagers – whose ages range from 14-17 — and with issues from ADHD to drugs, promiscuity and fights, in ABC’s new reality series, "Brat Camp," premiering in two back-to-back episodes, WEDNESDAY, JULY 13 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

The nine families make a tough choice and send their kids to SageWalk, The Wilderness School, in the wilds of Oregon for a period of more than fifty days, in the desperate hope that, once it’s over, they’ll get back the children they once knew.

In the special two-hour premiere, we meet the kids as they arrive at SageWalk, learn about their issues and see their defiance in action, as they’re confronted for the first time with the harsh realities of camp life. Forced to hike 10 miles with 40-lb. backpacks, the kids celebrate Thanksgiving in the wilderness without family, and with the ultimate question being whether they’ll make it home for Christmas.

The participants include:

Lauren, 17, from Davis, CA, a straight "A" student who excelled in everything until her father suddenly passed away when she was 11. Unable to deal with the grief, Lauren turned to drugs and admits to smoking pot every day and doing whatever it takes to get her fix. Lauren’s mother sent her to SageWalk hoping that her daughter would face up to her father’s death and quit drugs.

Jada, 15, from Boston, MA, refuses to go to school. She has dropped out of two boarding schools and nine private schools in the last six years. Instead of going to school, she throws parties and experiments with sex, drugs and alcohol. Jada’s an aspiring singer who thinks she doesn’t need school because she’s going to be a star one day. She’s also a compulsive liar who is always making excuses. Her parents sent her to SageWalk so that she’ll become motivated about her life, stop taking things for granted and start telling the truth.

Nick, 14, from Seattle, WA, is a dyslexic teenager who is constantly fighting with his family. Not only does he disrespect his father and yell obscenities at his mother, he once even pulled a knife on his twin brother. Unable to deal with Nick’s relentless anger issues any longer, his parents made the decision to send him to SageWalk.

Shawn, 17, from Irvine, CA, has been struggling with drug abuse for several years. He admits to stealing from his own mother to buy drugs, and is constantly truant from school. Shawn’s parents believe his problems stem from the fact that he was adopted, and they sent him to SageWalk hoping that he’ll learn to face his abandonment issues and gain self-esteem.

Heather, 16, from Centreville, VA, used to be athletic and innocent until she started hanging out with the wrong crowd. Now she experiments with all types of drugs and is constantly running away from home for weeks at a time. Her adoptive parents sent her to SageWalk because they feel that Heather is heading down the same road as her birth mother – to a heroin-induced coma.

Lexie, 17, from St. Helena, CA, used to be a good girl who rode horses and excelled in school, but when she was 11, Lexie was molested by someone she trusted. She has since suffered from depression, become verbally abusive toward her parents, given up horseback riding and started failing in school. Lexie’s parents sent her to SageWalk hoping she’ll learn to deal with the secret that still haunts her.

Frank, 15, from Sacramento, CA, has anger management issues and problems with authority. He was recently suspended from school for arguing with a teacher and was sent to live with his uncle, a probation officer. Frank admits to being verbally abusive and furious at the world, and was sent to SageWalk to learn how to deal with his anger.

Derek, 14, from Litte Rock, AK, is a destructive teenager who has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He is failing school and is verbally abusive towards his mother. Derek’s parents have sent him to SageWalk to learn discipline, respect and self-control.

Isaiah, 17, from Winton, CA, is an angry punk rocker who smokes, drinks and has an obsession with fire. Isaiah is verbally abusive towards his mother and blames her for his parents’ divorce. He’s defiant and bitter, and is constantly getting into fist fights at school, especially with the ‘jocks.’ Isaiah’s mother sent him to SageWalk to learn how to deal with his anger issues.

Led by Tony Randazzo, aka "Glacier Mountain Wolf" – as all field instructors take earth names at the camp – the SageWalk field instructors guide these troubled teens through this potentially life-changing experience. Glacier, who also serves as the series’ narrator, hit rock bottom himself as a teenager, abusing drugs and alcohol and living on the street, and claims a wilderness camp similar to SageWalk saved his life. As the primary manager, Glacier trains and supervises the rest of the field staff and is the first face the teenagers see upon arrival.

Other field instructors at SageWalk include "Little Big Bear," who teaches wilderness survival out in the field; "Mountain Wind," who is responsible for the teenagers’ safety and health while in the wilderness; "Boulder," the instructor who often ends up dealing with the most difficult cases; and "Cougar," who prides himself on making a difference in the lives of at-risk youth.

SageWalk therapists include Dr. J. Huffine, aka "Flying Eagle" who, as the clinical director, supervises the progress of each student; Cindy Fogel, aka "Mother Raven," who often relates to the teens as a substitute mother and is very empathetic and emotional; and Scott Fitzwater, aka "Fire Bear" who, in addition to working with the teens, also has direct contact with their families and ultimately decides when each student is ready to go home.

"Brat Camp" is from Shapiro/Grodner Productions, with Arnold Shapiro and Allison Grodner serving as executive producers, and John Platt as co-executive producer. "Brat Camp" is based on the award-winning U.K. series from Twenty Twenty Productions, with Peter Casely-Hayford, Jamie Isaacs, Claudia Milne and Mark Rowland serving as executive producers.

How can we apply to send a troubled teen to be a contestant on this show. Our son Eric who is now 16 has been to 2 boot camps with raymond moses, a 3 month boot camp here in Louisiana, and a detox wilderness program in new mexico, he continues to disobey has no respect for authority at all, the medications have seized, as we believe in order for a child to heal or overcome emotional pain it has to come from within. His older brother who is now in a school for youth ministry to be a youth pastor, has counciled Eric to no avail.
Can you advise on where to go to sign him up??

Please tell me how I can get my daughter to be a contestant on this show,
Kayla is 16 and very disrespectful, as time goes on she only gets worse. She has broken several windows out of our house, she has broken the frame to the front door.
She has low self asteem. Her grades in school have dropped drastically this past year. I have brought her to many counselers in the past but nothing seems to help.
It would be wonderful if she would be considered for this program.

I would like to find out how I can get my 14 yr old daughter Ashlee on this show. She is very defiant and does not listen to anything. She gets in my face and curses at me, says to me “No wonder Daddy divorced you”. She has been arrested for 3rd degree assault and has run away. She has very low self esteem which I believe is part of her problem.
I would like her to be considered for this program.

My 13 year old sister needs a program like this!!!!!!!! She is a liar, thief and very disrespectful. She will bluntly laugh at our mother who at this point is helpless on what she can legally do. She had a litle bit of a run in with the law and it has not done anything for her. Sarah has very low self esteem and does not care who she hurts along her path. She has been suspended from school for fightig and suspeneded for being caught attempting to cheat. This show is just what she needs to make her wake up and realize that the path she is taking is going to wind up being a very wrong decision in her life. Please help our family and help us get her the help she needs.

i am a middle school LD teacher in FL and was in tears watching this show. I see some of these changes in my students over the years that they are in middle school, but I would love the opportunity to be one of the people out there helping these kids break down their walls. Frank especially touched my heart. Does anyone know how to find a camp like this in Fl & how I could get involved?

How can I get my son on the next show, he lies, steals, has run away, has anger issues, no respect for parents, and seems like he has no ambition for anything but friends and drinking. He’s been in therapy several times and it hasn’t helped.
    Please help!

  8. Jessica Meadows Says:
    July 13th, 2005 at 10:04 pm

My name is Jessica.I am a 24 yr. old woman from Toledo, Ohio. As a teenager I got invovled in the “wrong crowd”, abused drugs and alcohol, acted out violently towards my family and other people close to me. I stole, cheated, lied, ran away from home… basically wreaked havoc on my life as well as my family’s lives.

I am the oldest of four children. I have a now 22 year old sister named Rachel, a 16 year old sister named Holly, and a 14 year old brother named Landon. My parents constantly reminded me that I should be a better influence in their lives. They also said they believed I would one day be able to use the horrible experiences I went through from the ages of 12 to 18 to help troubled teens everywhere.

If anyone out there knows how I can contact the show or Sage Walk please email me at meadows1121@hotmail.com.

Also, for all of the people who think the teens are acting for the camera and that the show is staged or rehearsed, I want you to know that these problems these kids are brave enough to share with a national television audience are very real. These are raw, unrehearsed emotions. I know all too well the way they are feeling and what they are going through. It is, in my opinion, very brave of these teens to deal with their pasts and make positive changes in their lives.

I commend the people at “Brat Camp” and “Sage Walk” for their efforts in helping trouble teens turn their lives around. I only hope that these six teens and their families use what they learned during this experience and continue to try to rebuild their relationships. I cant wait to see the next episode!

Watching the show and seeing the parents really hit home with me. I feel like we are losing our 17 year old son that he could benefit from a program like this. He is out of control, but deep down he is an awesome kid. He had problems with drugs and alcohol when he was thirteen, but was very successful in AA for 2 years, was a different kid. Now he is hanging around with the wrong crowd again, flunking out of school and doing drugs. I really think he needs to be removed from the situation and find himself again. Please let me know how we can help him or if there are any places in GA.

Well, I should’ve known there would be millions of parents in need of help in this day and age with their teens and see this show as their answer. We have been thinking, along with our son’s counselor, about seeking out a boot camp for our 15 year old who, since the day he was born, has been defiant…even purposeful when praised for good behavior! Last year he attempted to kill his adopted brother when he realized he couldn’t control him either. He wants total control of everyone, CHOOSES to disobey every rule, rarely does any chore on his own….and blames US for his miserable childhood of no fun because “he has no life” due to all his constant disclipline. HELP!!!!!!
Thank you with much sincerity in advance!

I have an ADHD, ODD son who is 7 yrs old about to turn 8 in November. I have had this boy in over 20 different daycares, camps schools, on meds, and off of meds. I have no ideas as to how to stop him from becoming one of these choldren at 12 or 14 years old. I need help finding this same program and similar for his age group. He has no respect for woman and fears nothing. He has a father in his life and a step-father. My son is on his way to being a ward of the courts as an unreuly child at the tender age of 7. I need help to stop this from happening. If there is anyone out there that can advise me as to any program that would suit a child who is always agry inside….please contact me via my email as I am at the end of my rope with him. Thank you so much!

I think that this program to be shown on TV is the best thing that I have seen on the tube in many years. How sad it is that all the kids on this program are from the have’s and are loved and have caring families. The true winners of this TV program are the viewers that take the time to learn from the kids and hope that they don’t have a family that has a child that needs the Brat Camp. I have great respect for the counclors that spend so much time working with the kids on the program, it is refresing that we do have this kind of young counclors that have given so much to be part of this wonderful program called “Sage Walk”. I just hope that the TV program continues as it can only be a big hit and not just a blip in the summer programing.

  19. Kelli Says:
    July 14th, 2005 at 1:01 pm

My son Mica who will be turning 12 in Sept. has ADHD and ODD. Authority to him is nothing. He does not know the word respect. No matter what I do as fare as punishment he still treat adults like dirt on the ground that he would not even spit on. At time he can be the sweetest child most loving willing to do anything and at other times he will go to extrems as to grab his little brother and threaten to choke him or break his arm. Luckly I have learned not to leave these two alone for long periods of times.
His father and I are divorced and I do beleave that has much to do with his attitude. He has always thought from the begenning that 90% of us seperating is his fault, and not matter how much he is reassured by the both of us and both sets of grandparnets as well as other family members that it had nothing to do with him he just refuses to accept that. talk of sucide or killing people that get on his bad side come from him when he is out raged the most.
After numerous counslers and different types of medications, I am at my wits end.
He finally after two years came to live with me (his mother) with much improvement at school. its a totally differnt school district and he and I have an understanding as to how each other should be treated and he has told me I am the only person he knows that he has respect for. As far as the way he treat everyone else in our lives its just horrible. Idea on help would be greatly appreciated.
Oh yes, and majors kudos to the show and the host. I thought this was going to be boot camp like school, the calmness and the respect that they show for the teens with out taking any crap is just totally awesome.
The host as well as the troubled teens will be in my prayers.

  21. Jeanne Says:
    July 15th, 2005 at 8:53 am

My nephew was diagnosed ADHD at the age of 4 and when he reached 4th grade he was diagnosed as bi-polar as well. My sister has done everything she could to help this kid, including counseling and medication. She has fought the school district to get special classes and the help he needs to succeed. However, now he has flunked his freshman year because he has skipped so much school, he refuses to take the medication and the last time she tried to take him to counseling, he tried to jump out of the car window.

He is now 16 years old but the past three years he has taken a major downhill slide. He has gotten into fights, physically and mentally abused his younger sister, destroyed property, threatened to kill my sister and “her entire family” and he has been on probation, which he violated constantly without any consequences until recently. At the probation office’s behest, he was made a ward of the court. He requested and was placed with a friend of my sisters who is an alcoholic, despite my sister’s protests. During the period he was there, the guy he was placed with got a DUI and my nephew almost killed himself with alcohol. When the police picked him up, his blood alcohol level was .335. They immediately sent him to the hospital and he was put on dialysis.

After getting out of the hospital, he was sent to juvenile hall for violating his probation and has been there for the past month. He will be returning back to my sister’s house next week and I am frightened about what he might do to my sister and niece.

At this point, we do not know where to turn. When I watched this show I recognized so many of my nephew’s traits in the different kids. I know that kid that I used to take play with and take on outings is in there somewhere. My family and I just want to find him again. If there is anything you can do to help, we would be eternally grateful.

I have an almost fifteen year old son, whom desperately needs some help with his out of control attitude. He punched out the bay window, put a hole in his bedroom door, and throws and slams everything in his path. He is not always like this, so I know there has to be help for him. The school has had a rough time with him as well. I have four other children following him, and cannot afford to get him the help he needs, or possibly the family needs. Oh, did I mention he and I watched an episode of “Brat Camp” and he said it was nothing. He could handle forty days of hiking. I beg to differ. PLEASE HELP OUR WHOLE FAMILY!
I know he can be a good, responsible, loving kid. P.S. He continually threatens everyone with physical harm.

She is now on probation for shopplifting. She has dropped out of school, and has very low self esteem. some of the other things she has done consist of brakeing curfew, drinking, testing positive for cocaine and marijuana, and has said thoughts of suicide. This is soo pathetic. All you little girls are like trying to stalk Shawn and Nick by knowing their last name and emails. You guys don’t even know them personally, so why are you saying “HE’S MINE BACk OFF!”. It’s annoying, if Nick came on and seen that, he would be probably creeped out. You’ll probably won’t ever get to see them. And eventually you’ll lose interest and obbesse over the next 16 year old boy that comes up on tv. Grow up.

my four year old daughter is already rebelling because her dad left. she throughs fits to the point that i worry that the neighbors will call the cops. she has even hit me more than once because she didn’t like my answer to a question. She herself even threaten to call the cops on me for putting her in time out for throwing a toy at her younger brother. Are we headed down a path that is irreversable or is there help now for us. Any advice is greatly appreciated and welcomed!!!!

I would like to see my son Wesley
get into a program like this one.
He is ADHD and on meds. He still
is noncomplaint ,does not follow rules, swears, skips school, and blames everyone for his problems.
Wesley is 16 and needs to find himself and his talents and get rid of his anger. How can we apply?
