Neal Carlson Eliminated from Rock Star: INXS

July 20, 2005 10:29 PM by Joe Blackmon

Finally a little bit of controversy hits Rock Star: INXS.  The first couple of episodes have been rather calm with all the contestants wandering around paying compliments to one another.  But JD Fortune’s comments during the Tuesday night singing competition stepped on quite a few toes in the house.

As Reality TV Magazine reported, JD Fortune made a comment about his fellow contestants saying “while they’re learning the INXS songs, I know them because I love them.”  Brooke Burke opened the show by pointing out that this statement riled things up back at the mansion.  Mig is shown saying, “I was sick to the stomach with what he said.”  Brandon even confronts JD telling him, “As a friend, as your boy, you offended me tonight.”

After the segment from the mansion airs, Dave Navarro comes to JD’s defense and says “some of you seem like you’re trying out for a band, but JD for sure seems like he’s trying out for this band.”  INXS then recognizes Suzie, Mig, and JD for taking risks and doing well in their performances.

Brook Burke then announces the three lowest vote-getters as Tara Slone, Neal Carson, and Jessica Robinson.  Each of the bottom three vote-getters have to sing an INXS song in hopes of impressing INXS and avoiding elimination.  Tara sings “Mystify”, Neal sings “Suicide Blonde”, and Jessica sings “Don’t Change.”  After the performances, INXS tells Neal Carlson, “I’m really sorry mate.  You’re just not right for our band INXS."

I missed the first half of the show because I was thinking it came on at 9:30,so i didn’t see the “aftermath”,but i guess i’m actually glad i didn’t,though. I like J.D and MiG and it kinda sucks that one of my favorites is disgusted with the other. I was kinda hoping they were buds, like Bo and Constantine (who SHOULD’VE been on THIS show:( ). But I guess I couldn’t blame MiG,though, because I can see where comments like that would get to just about anyone. I’m glad to find out that Dave Navarro defended him, though, because I agree with him;most of these people seem to want to be in *A* band, but J.D wants to be in THIS band. To me, he seems to be the only one who really grasps the concept that the winner is to be the “heir” to someone who is no longer here (which would personally bug me out a bit)and since he was already a die-hard fan, maybe he’s up to the responsibility of keeping one of his favorite singers’ legacy alive. After all, if the band is going to replace Michael at all, they at least owe it to him to get someone who can see what a big deal this really is. This isn’t American Idol and their frontman didn’t get a day job,he’s dead. He hanged himself. And his band is replacing him, so this is pretty serious. I mean,if there was going to be a new Nirvana and Dave and Krist did a show to replace Kurt and the winner turned out to be some former jockhead who didn’t even like Nirvana, but wanted to join a rock band to “get chicks”, how would all of the heartbroken fans who cut school the “Day After” feel about that? It’s just about respect, you know? I mean, that’s not to disrespect any of the other contestants because I actually like almost all of them. Ty was my original favorite after catching the previews and Jordis has that whole Ani DiFranco(my idol) vibe and an AMAZING voice(especially doing “Heart Shaped Box”) and Daphna and Heather are really cool and MiG is just SO ADORABLE and I love his voice, stage presence and sense of humor(I like when he fell over:P). And who knows, maybe there are more die-hard INXS fans in the group. But I really think J.D just wanted to show how seriously he takes the whole thing. I think he wants this more than anyone(I read in a magazine that, supposedly,he dreamed about auditioning for the band about 9 months before he found out about the tryouts),so i only hope his mouth doesn’t cost him his chance because that would be pretty sad.

Speaking of sad, I missed Neal’s last performance too,so that sucks. I liked him too and I can’t believe he was cut already. I didn’t expect that. I mean, true,he is more Mick Jagger than Michael Hutchence, but he’s still cool and was fun to watch. I’ll miss him. But,now,he can start his own band and maybe open for the Stones. That would be cool. Or maybe someday, there’ll be a show to replace…nah, don’t wanna say that. Hopefully,we’ll still see him around though. I think they should ALL get deals, really, because they all deserve it. I still, personally, feel that maybe J.D deserves this the most, though. But i don’t know. I guess whoever gets it deserved it,huh?

Okay, maybe I do sound a bit crazy defending a guy I don’t even know, especially considering that I listened to Alanis’ “Hand in My Pocket” again and realized that J.D altered the words,as well as the arrangement(“flicking a cigarette” is earlier in the song and the last 2 lines are actually “playing a piano” and “hailing a taxi cab”). Plus,to be honest,I didn’t even really know INXS. I only saw the “New Sensation” video, so that hardly counts as being a die-hard fan. But still, just the idea of having a contest to replace a late frontman seems kinda sad,you know? I mean,I still think they must’ve gotten the idea by watching Bo Bice performing with Skynrd, but that was different, though. That was nice because he was kind of stepping in for Ronnie, without actually replacing him,but this…I don’t know. I just hope that if J.D doesn’t win, whoever does will take it as seriously as he seems to and won’t let the band, the fans,or Michael down.

Okay…um…now I don’t know. I still think JD really wants this, but there may be a such thing as trying TOO hard. And he’s getting in WAY over his head, trying to do “We Are The Champions” because, man,Freddie’s voice was INCREDIBLE and aside from Constantine Maroulis and MIG(HE should’ve gotten that song!),not many guys can pull off a Queen song. And I’m not so sure if doing his own arrangement on this one will work out as well as the other two because this is a very sacred song…so i don’t know. If he screws it up,not only will he look really stupid for his comments, but he could be talking himself right out the door. But if he could pull off one of the best songs from one of the GREATEST singers EVER,then I guess he can say whatever he wants. We’ll see tomorrow,I guess. I just hope he doesn’t kill the song because THAT would be a tragedy.

BE the Champion,JD! Don’t let Michael,Freddie,or ME down!!! PLEASE!?
