Kill Reality – Reality TV Stars As Actors

July 26, 2005 12:06 AM by Joe Blackmon

Tanya_jumpNowadays, it seems like everybody who is famous, whether they are musicians, actors, or just filthy rich, wants their own reality TV show.  Kill Reality takes the concept in reverse.  It’s about reality TV stars who want to be actors.

Anytime, you put a bunch of reality TV stars together in any type of project, it is going to be a tempting target for TV critics.  The concept of a reality show about reality stars making a movie sounds like something that is going to be difficult to pull off in a way that is interesting, but Kill Reality pulls it off.  Kill Reality is actually one of the most entertaining new reality shows to premiere this Summer.

In the premiere episode, it turns out to be one of the lesser known reality stars that steals the show.  The main drama involves Toni Ferrari, who was on Fox’s Paradise Hotel.  The films producers don’t want to cast Toni in a lead part, but they want to include her because they know how much acting means to her.  They write a small part for Toni, but this doesn’t sit well with Toni.  Toni proceeds to rewrite the script to give herself a bigger part.  Rob Cesternino (from Survivor who is a producer/writer for the movie) delivers the line of the show by pointing out that many great actors probably do this, but he’s pretty sure “none of those great actors were ever on Paradise Hotel.”

The second biggest drama after Toni trying to increase her screen time is Tonya Cooler from the Real World nearly jumping out a window.  Of course, the movie is all about killing reality stars, but Tonya’s apparent near suicide attempt isn’t part of the movie.  And if a Real Worlder threatening to jump out a window isn’t reason enough to find Kill Reality entertaining, then the fact that Survivor castaway Johnny Fairplay, who gained notoriety for lying about his grandmother dying, coaches her back inside and into his bed should be.  Kill Reality looks like it is going to be one wild ride.

Rob was hilarious. Toni kind of reminds me of Sue Hawk from Survivor.

Toni is a BIG loser! Who does she thinks she is? Meryl Streep! Please! She is pathetic, give it up Toni, you’re never going to go ANYWHERE with that attitude. Everybody is laughing at you. Your a clown, go audition for Ringling Brothers, you’ll be sure to get the lead!

Interesting that you should note how Reality TV stars are like actors. It seems that much more than just the reality is contrived for these television programs.

Exhibit A: Andrea Langi played a bit part in Sex and the City before landing “For love or money 3.” On the show’s Web site, her job was described as that of an event planner. A search on IMDB reveals that Ms. Langi had acting aspirations long before the reality TV show she starred in.

Exhibit B: Sean Yasbeck was in a short movie called Night Shift before ending up as on of the finalists of The Apprentice 5. He’s described as a recruitment consultant.

My theory: reality shows are scripted, and the cast members are struggling actors, happy to get the screentime. This could also explain why “contestants” on some of these series are so darn good-looking…
