In a continuation of a controversy from American Idol, some viewers are upset over a perceived prejudice against big girls on reality TV shows. During the American Idol tryouts, many viewers pointed out that heavy guys seemed to be held to a different standard than heavy girls. Heavy guys were often put through to the later stages of the competition as inspirational favorites, while heavy girls were usually harshly eliminated.
History seems to be repeating itself during the So You Think You Can Dance auditions. Nigel tells a heavy girl that, “I wanted to be able to say big girls rock too, and they didn’t on this occasion.” Right after the heavy girl elimination, a heavy guy named Allan Frias a.k.a. Big Poppa auditions. Nigel tells Big Poppa, “It’s great to see a big person dance as well as you do. You’re a big star.”
Looking at these two specific performances, it did appear as if Big Poppa did give the better performance. Yet, it does seem surprising that at least in the segments that have aired so far it doesn’t appear as if the producers found a single heavy girl worthy of making it through. If there were heavy guys worthy of making it into the competition, then out of all the thousands of auditions wouldn’t there have been some heavy girls that were worthy of making it through as well?
