Rock Star: INXS – What If They Hired A Mean Judge?

August 02, 2005 11:34 PM by Joe Blackmon

Jordis_rockstarIt’s a shame that Rock Star: INXS is floundering in the ratings.  RealityBlurred.com even reports on a Wall Street Journal article that hints the show could be rescheduled.  However, rescheduling this show would surely kill it off completely.  The rotating times over three days is confusing enough.  Rock Star: INXS is a concept with great potential, but it is not living up to its potential.

One thing that could help Rock Star: INXS is if they brought in a mean judge.  Dave Navarro is a nice guy.  All the band members are nice guys.  They all suffer from Paula Abdulitis in that their comments lean very heavily toward gushing praise.  Musicians do not necessarily make good judges.  Musicians who have made it know the struggle it takes to get to the top and are perhaps too sympathetic to the plights of other musicians.

Last week, INXS eliminated two singers in a surprise move, but this week, they could easily eliminate half the singers if they really want to get things moving.  After seeing their most recent performances, our prediction is that MiG Ayesa, Marty Casey, and Jordis Unga are bound for the final three.  The praise heaped on these three singers is well deserved.  Jordis is so good that INXS might actually hold her back.  Her vocals are strong enough that a solo career would probably be more advantageous for her.  Jordis is almost a sure bet for the encore performance.

J.D. Fortune is also bound to be sticking around for awhile.  J.D. actually did very well with singing “The Letter”, but no matter what Dave Navarro says, the fact that he followed Jordis made it evident that she was stronger vocally.  However, at this point, the controversy that J.D. creates is the only thing interesting going on at the mansion.  J.D. could probably suck helium and sing in a high pitched voice, and Dave and INXS would still rave, because they know if they lose J.D. then the ratings will go even more South.

Our prediction is that it will be three girls in the bottom three again.  Unless viewers take pity on Jessica, she is almost certain to be bound for the bottom three again.  Tara and Suzy will probably be joining her.

I am really enjoying this show. I hope that others catch on during the mid-season like I did. They have a format that differs (in a good way I think) from American Idol and proves that being a star isn’t just about having the “best voice”. A rock star is all about entertaining the audience.

Rockstar INSX is such a refreshing change from the bad auditions/bad singing/bad songs and filler that is on American Idol. I don’t understand why it isn’t a big hit. I would be immensely upset if this show were taken off the air!!! I’m so interested in following the careers of the participants.

I’m actually glad the judges are sympathetic to their fellow musicians. I’d love to see SIMON get up on stage in front of not only the studio audience and millions of viewers at home, but also a judge like himself, and see how HE likes it:),you know? I hate when the judges are Producers because they concentrate so much on the BUSINESS part of Show Business, but musicians know where these kids are coming from, so I think their criticisms mean more (and there’s a better chance seeing the “non-winners” again because they won’t be so publically humiliated that they want to live alone in the dark forever). I mean, there is more to being a musician than just how well you sing, or even perform…like heart and drive. And maybe that’s what’s saving JD’s ass because at least he shows a true desire to win. Then again, over-the-top praise led to a cocky statement and a shaky performance, but jokes about the performance and his emotional reunion with his sister(one was funny;one wasn’t) led to his best performance yet, so I don’t know. Sometimes tough love works best (Simon did push Clay and Constantine, which led to 2 of the BEST AI performances EVER; “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Solitaire”)and it does push people to try harder, while praise can make them too complacent, so they just stay right where they are and never get any better. But still, musicians actually know how to offer real constructive criticism, instead of just taking cheap shots at the contestants, which isn’t cool for anyone,so I’m glad they didn’t resort to hiring an “insult comic” just to boot ratings.

On that note, I’d like to think that all of those who remain belong there and they’re all equally deserving; so much so that my loyalties have been all over the place. On AI, I was for Constantine since the auditions and Bo since top 24, but my favorites on here have changed so many times already that I can’t keep up. Ty’s still cool and I still think Jordis is AWESOME (though I would probably rather see her solo, like Ani DiFranco.I still can’t get over how much she reminds me of her) and Marty’s growing on me. The safest Finale for me would be JD vs MiG,though, because then it could go either way and I’d still be happy because I love them both equally and think they’d both fit in the band as easily (plus it would make up for the Bo/Constantine Finale that SHOULD’VE been). But if we want an EXCITING Finale; maybe JD and Brandon. JD made an off-hand comment, Brandon called him on it, both had a shaky performance the next week, but ended up making peace, and then both came back with their strongest performance yet. WEIRD! But maybe that’s the kind of competitive spirit this show needs. But after the double elimination last week, ANYTHING can happen, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

I have watched a bit of this, only because I fell upon it one night while flipping channels and I saw Queen’s “We are the Champions” up for grabs. My being the consummate Queen fan, I had to see how badly JD would destroy it, and I wasn’t disappointed…meaning that he did destroy it.

I must say this show doesn’t grab me though. I’m not left after a half-hour begging for tomorrow night to come.
Most of the time I forget it’s even on.
I only get reminded by my on-screen TV listings.

This is mainly because INXS was a mediocre group even in their heyday. Practically every popular song sounded the same, (Listen to New Sensation, Suicide Blonde and Kick all in a row…to me, they’re the same song), and all with repetitive lyrics.

Hell, I didn’t even know they were still around until a couple of years ago.

And I would imagine that most of the world’s pop-music listening population is the same way. It would be as if the Ace of Bass or Doug & the Slugs was looking for a new singer. Band that were very popular in their own country and fairly popular around the world…A LONG TIME AGO! No-one would care.
And from what I’ve read about the show’s ratings…no-one really does.

One last thing to say though, Jordis is a real cutie.
