It’s been a rough week for reality TV fans. First, rumors surfaced that Simon Cowell might not be back on American Idol, and now the Newlyweds appears to be over for good. On the evening before Thanksgiving, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey officially announced their separation to Us Weekly.
Jessica Simpon and Nick Lachey’s joint release to Us Weekly stated "After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways. This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."
The request for privacy seems unusual given the timing of the announcement. By making the announcement on Thanksgiving eve, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey probably ensured that they would become the topic of millions of Thanksgiving dinner conversations. The timing almost seems like a publicity stunt (maybe they’re planning a new reality series called The Separation: Nick & Jessica).
That Jessica and Nick chose to issue the release to Us Weekly also seems unusual. Us Weekly had reported the couple’s split way back in their October 17 issue, and the couple had vehemently denied that it was true. Why would Jessica and Nick issue a press release to a magazine that had angered them by publishing an early story on their break-up if they didn’t love the publicity?
Of course, Jessica and Nick might have considered the timing of their separation announcement their revenge on celebrity journalist. Most celebrity journalist were probably on their way to family Thanksgiving celebrations when the news broke. Many of whom were probably called back into the office to work on coverage of one of the biggest celebrity break-up stories of the year.
