American Idol San Francisco Auditions – Simon Has Left The Building
January 26, 2006 12:50 AM by Joe Blackmon
The American Idol San Francisco auditions showed us a very agitated Simon Cowell. Simon bickered with Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul throughout the auditions. After a heated argument with Paula Abdul over Clay Aiken, Simon Cowell even got up and walked out of the auditions.
The first clue that Simon was in a bad mood came with the very first contestant. Heidi Fairbanks became probably the first attractive blonde female contestant with a halfway decent singing voice to ever not make it through to Hollywood. Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson both vetoed her making it through to the next round.
Shawn Vasquez didn’t fair any better, as Simon Cowell tells him that he has “one of the worst voices that he has ever heard” and calls it “almost non-human.”
All three judges did manage to agree on some contestants such as Jose “Sway” Penala, Lauren Weckerly, and Katherine McPhee, who got unanimous endorsements for Hollywood. All three judges also agreed on how bad some contestants were such as Matthew Wolfie Paulson, who tried to sing “Measure of a Man” by Clay Aiken. Simon called his audition “hideous.”
Simon Cowell disagreed with Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul on several other contestants. John Williams, Shawna White, and Jayne Santayana all owe their trip to Hollywood exclusively to Randy and Paula.
The uproar that leads to Simon’s departure starts with Deborah Dawn Tilley. Simon Cowell tells her “you’re kind of like somebody’s mother who for a dare has been told to look like Cher for some ghastly fancy dress party and does her song that’s how the whole thing came over.” Simon goes on to add “I know it sounds rude but I almost need to hear you singing with my eyes shut because I’m so put off by this image.” Paula then claims that is what Simon said about Clay Aiken. Simon retorts that Paula wasn’t even there. Simon gets up and leaves saying “you know you can do this on your own for awhile.”

I don’t know, maybe it was the way the sequence was edited, but I got the feeling that it was all somewhat contrived.

We are suppose to find an Idol,
Save the air fare, pack the suitcase and do like Simon says,
No one really out of last nights
show was an IDOL, sorry! No Idols!
I watched the show with 6 others
we all were still looking for a
class act, an IDOL! I believe Simon is looking for an IDOL he
is trying to do his job. Sometimes
these people just don’t understand
NO! No! I’m sorry! Simon, was right! I like all of the Judges!
I watch every season! I picked the winners! I think the show is
enjoyable ,not the 25th show, last night, TERRIBLE! Sorry!
Simon I enjoy you! I think Simon, and all of the judges are knowledgeable, if you can’t sing,
stay home! Simon I believe is really trying to let them down gracefully and they don’t get it!
No common sense in that Audition room, as well as class and Talent,
NO! Still looking, for an IDOL!
Judges hang in there! It’s like a toothache, deal with it as long as
you can, then fix it or remove the
problem! There is Talent somewhere
maybe Pleasant Hill Mo, Kansas City, Mo.??? I don’t sing!!! Talent is somewhere out there!
Happy New Year everyone!

I disagree. Simon pre-picks the winner every season and then we’re supposed to believe there was real judging. John Stevens and Scott Savol were on the air because Simon thought they should be. This year, it’s the same thing. That silly cowboy. Geezh. He’ll be eaten up alive. Because Simon thinks that’s good tv. Meanwhile, real talent goes by the wayside. Remember, Simon didn’t think Bo or Constantine should be on the show last year. There wouldn’t have been a Season 4 without those two. And I’m tired of his telling us who the winner is every year before the competition starts. Carrie has a good voice, but who would want to watch a frozen post sing out of a wooden mouth? This show will never last til ’09.

It’s so obvious Paula has the hots for Simon. She’s very aware of him and almost giggly.

Do you happen to have a picture of Katharine McPhee from last night’s American Idol (San Fran)? I write a daily blog on http://www.jackieandbender.com and was looking for her pic…no luck. Can you help?
I love your site!

I would like to start by replying to the comment about Paula and Simon, actually she is good friends with his wife.
But never mind that, I think Simon was kind of having an off night on the 25th as he looked kind of boried…however you must remember, they see lots of bad singers and some people who shouldn’t even be in there because the are dancers or whatever. And I have noticed that everyone is quick to point out when Simon is mean to people but, somehow overlook all the times he has gone out of his way to be nice, like when he called that woman’s boss and got her job back.
True he can be hurtfully rude at times but, often it is to people who has the mistaken idea that they are “all that” when in fact they suck. Honestly he is saving some of those people years of suffering under dellusions of misunderstood greatness.
All that aside it is kind of his job to get along with the other judges. Although this was not the first time they completely didn’t agree and I think it was last year that Paula was the one who walked out angry.
