Kellie Pickler, Is She Too Similar To Carrie Underwood?

In the Greensboro, North Carolina auditions, Kellie Pickler emerged as one of the most likable contestants in the competition. In fact, she could be classified as an early favorite, as she is one of the few contestants that already appears to be developing a strong online fan following.
Kellie Pickler definitely has a lot going for her. She is attractive, has a great singing voice, and an amazing background story. Having a good background story at this early stage in the American Idol competition is a huge advantage, because it makes the contestant more memorable to both the judges and the viewers.
Kellie Pickler is a 19 year old female from Albemarle, North Carolina. Kellie works as a roller skating waitress at a Sonic Drive-in and lives with her grandfather. Kellie’s mother left her when she was two years old, and her father has been in and out of prison pretty much her whole life. An article in The Meadville Tribune reveals that Kellie’s grandparents Clyde and Faye Pickler took care of her after her mother left. Kellie’s grandmother Faye passed away two and half years ago.
Kellie Pickler sang Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” and Martina McBride’s “Broken Wing” for her American Idol 5 audition. Even though Simon Cowell expressed concern that Kellie was oversinging the songs, he also thought she was terrific and really liked her. All three judges voted Kellie through to the next round, causing Kellie to break down in tears of happiness. After Kellie had left the room, Simon Cowell even remarked “that’s a nice girl..that’s someone that I would like to see do well.”
Kellie Pickler actually has more experience in singing in public than most would probably gather from her American Idol background clip. Kellie competed in 2005 in a North Carolina signing competition called “Gimme The Mike! Charlotte.” Kellie made it to the finals of the competition, but she did not win. According to The Meadville Tribune, Kellie also won the Miss Stanly County Pageant in 2004 and competed in the Miss North Carolina Pageant, where she was the youngest contestant. Kellie also sang the national anthem at a Wal-mart grand opening.
With everything that Kellie has going for here, it would seem like that she would be a shoe-in to make it far in American Idol 5. The only thing that could potentially derail Ms. Pickler is comparisons to last year’s American Idol winner Carrie Underwood. The comparisons could both help and hinder Kellie. Many of Carrie’s fans from last year could support Kellie as their contestant of choice, while other fans might avoid voting for Kellie because they don’t want to see a similar contestant win again this year.

LOVE Kellie!!!! I think she deserves to win the competition. She definitely has more of a rockish voice then Carrie Underwood, so I don’t understand why people think they sound alike.

People don’t think that Carrie and Kellie sing the same. People think they ARE the same. Both pretty blondes from the midwest, both beauty pageant winners, both country singers. That’s enough in common to either win you over or drive you away.

I seriously doubt she will win. They’re looking for something different in this competition. We need a rocker winner or something. In case you haven’t noticed Kelly wants to win ’cause of sympathy. Oh yea, she thinks the whole “my dad went to jail. Feel sorry for me” will work. Look at her in her first audition. She acted so innocent. Now look at her hollywood audition. She’s the total opposite. She has potential, but I don’t think she will make it to the top 12. There are better female singers than her this season. Also, did you notice nobody was talking to her nor were with her? That says a lot.

when i first saw kelly’s audition, i really liked her from the start. but then i thought to myself, “people aren’t going to pay much attention to her voice because she RESEMBLES carrie underwood.” i mean, so what? just cause she’s a country girl & she’d blonde, that makes her ‘another carrie’ ? if some people weren’t so busy comparing her to carrie, they’d notice her own UNIQUE, BEAUTIFUL singing voice. besides, carrie had more of a country accent in her voice. go kelly.

She is full of herself. On her top 24 idol interview they ask her her definition of an American Idol, her answer is ‘Kellie Dawn Pickler’
She may think that sounds confident, but to me it just sounds so stuck up. She can sing, I won’t deny that, but I don’t like the fact that she always says she deserves it. there were plenty of people who had hard lifes and deserved it, but they didn’t get it. I don’t think she will win. If the competition went by who had the best sob story then I don’t think Carrie would not have won last season. Kellie needs to figure out that her story won’t get her everywhere.
I don’t know Kellie so I am not judging that she is not a nice person, I just feel like she is using that story to try to win fans.

Kellie has a great voice, and I agree that she’s just too stuck up. Did you see her on her first audition? She looked humble, but now she looks like a …. you know what I mean. I think she wants sympathy for her “sad” story. Hey, it wouldn’t surprise me if it wasn’t true. Have you seen her on the hollywood auditions? Nobody talked to her and everyone was giving that annoying look. She was acting as if she already won and she was in control. She needs more brains.

I’ve met Kellie before and she isn’t all that sweet at all. She is sweet with the “hot” ones. But she treats the rest different. No one even mentioned her during the auditions. If people liked her, they would’ve shown her hollywood audition and talked about her. And people were giving her annoyed looks on the first auditions. Is she a true person? She has a great voice and she shouldn’t blow up this huge opportunity with her attitude.

I did not like the fact that Kellie said she had never performed in front of anyone and she has numerous times. And then stated she had never performed with live music. I also feel she is trying to act shy and inexperienced when she is not. She was Miss Stanly County and in the Finals on Gimme the Mike Charlotte which aired on local television.

Hey y’all who are jealous of Kellie. This girl is more genuine and sweet than all the other contestants combined. I will root and vote for her every time, without fail. You who cast stones and accuse her of being “stuck-up” have serious issues. This girl is the most “real” contestant American Idol has ever had, and you who can’t sympathize with her tear’s about her dad being in jail and mom leaving her at age 2 are heartless, callous, insensitive fools. Get a grip, and consider something outside of your own spoiled, pampered lives. Kellie is a role-model and inspiration to anyone who has ever spilled tears over their own broken or difficult family life. I hope for only good things for this sweetie, and she has stolen my heart, and votes from this day forward.

I think Kellie is FINE as a m/f and would do whatever to get with her. she has a good singing voice and a great body. So f-ing what if she looks a talks like Carrie Underwood; blonde and has a country accent, she’s from the mid-south you ignorant, ego-stricken losers. Thats just normal down here, Im from Tennessee and 78% of the girls here, and probably as well as in North Carolina, are blondes with a country accent. Did Kellie even go to school? I agree she’s one of the bests, but I doubt she’ll win. She will probably make it far, though. But she didn’t show education last week, when she interrupted Ryan Seacrest while he was talking. We all get that’s nice, but that wasn’t polite. It’s like talking with your mouth full while singing. She also stands as if she was in the toilet. She still has a lot to learn and too whiny also

Kellie IS the American Idol….Period! Even when I resist the urge to think about how easy it will be to package and present her professionally, I find it very easy to love her. Man, she has it all. Looks, youth, talent, humor & honesty. If someone plans to beat her they better be ready to come early and stay late! And just think….she’s just getting started! A Star Is Born!!! Only in America! lol im from stanly country and i went to school with her (north stanly high). I don’t know how you guys see her because i know her and i see her differently, but i dont think its right to say she is using her sob story to win. if you lived a life like hers, it would pretty much be all you thought about also. She has a wonderful voice and i think deserves to win, whether or not she does. But shes not as country in real life as she acts on television.

â€â€>She never said that she hadn’t performed in front of people before. She said she had never sung with live musicians or a band before. There is a big difference between Karaoke or singing to a backing track and singing with live musicians. I don’t think she was misrepresenting here at all because neither the pageant nor gimme the mic use live bands. It’s all karaoke style.
I also disagree with those of you who say she is stuck up. That is hilarious. She is one of the most down to earth, real performers in the competition. She has been called out on being too nervous multiple times by the judges and readily admits it herself. I think this shows the opposite, that she is actually a little lacking in confidence and is probably a bit unsure of herself. People like that are usually not stuck up and if they are, it is only to mask other insecurities.
She may not win the competition unless she steadily improves (which she might) but she is one of my favorites win or lose. Partially because she turned out as well as she has despite having a less than perfect home life. She is funny, very cute and very entertaining on the show. I hope she goes far.

so what if she looks and sounds like Carrie Underwood…i would take that as a complement. Yes she has very few similarities but she isn’t just like her. Kellie has the “IT” factor and if you haven’t noticed yet, she is one of the favorites(as well as mine)she represents all of the people who have had a bad childhood and is one of my rolemodels. The comparisons between Kellie and Carrie are foolish. Carrie Underwood is from Oklahoma, Kellie is from North Carolina — two totally different regions of the country. I think a lot of yankees from the North or the Western USA tend to lump all “country folks” in the same package and don’t understand how different North Carolina can be from, say Mississippi or Georgia (the accents especially). There are many flavors of southern accents. Carrie Underwood does not have a southern accent, she has an Okie accent. Kellie, now there is a true southern accented girl (though she sounds different from the girls here in ‘Bama where I live).
Secondly, for those who say they look alike, are you on crack? Kellie, imo, is 100 times better looking. Carrie is sorta bow-legged and lanky — Kellie is a petite, hot lil tight body. I think a lot of jealous people see two attractive blondes and say “oh they look alike.”
Now that being said, I do NOT think Kellie has the best voice, even though I AM pulling for her to win. I am being objective here and must say Kat McPhee (who is Kellie’s roommate) is unreal — probably the best FEMALE vocalist idol has seen so far. Kellie is good, yeah, but not in the same league as Mcphee and Lisa Tucker. If Kellie has a hope to win, she cannot ruin herself by doing what Heather Cox did and try Mariah Carey or a Whitney Houston or someone WAY outta her vocal range. Kellie must take the country / Bonnie Rait / Mellisa Etheridge approach if she has a prayer. One on one, in a pure vocal sense, she can’t hang with McPhee or Tucker.
Now, all THAT being said, I think a male may actually go home with the gold. If you ask me, the best overall singer and performer in this competition is Elliot Yamin. The dude is a Stevie Wonder with eyes — unreal voice. For those of who you disagree, I admit Yamin isn’t the most beautiful guy, but try this — go back on your TIVO and play his first week’s performance and do not watch but merely listen to his vocals — incredible. Hicks and Chris D. are awesome too. There are more talented guys this year than girls, but Kellie seems to have the largest following I have seen this season (although Taylor Hicks brings that same southern likeableness to the table and apparently has a following too). It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.
As for reality vocal competitions, I must say American Idol needs to watch out for CBS’s “Rockstar show” (second season of it starts this fall). Last season’s show with INXS, I thought the contestants, by and large, blew any idol final 12 outta the water. The best female vocalist I have ever seen on a reality vocal show — Suzie McNeil from last year’s Rockstar. The girl would put any femnale to shame on idol this season. I realize comparing the two shows is not fair since Rockstar does not claim to be an amateur competition, whereas Idol will not let professionals on.
P.S., if you didn’t watch Rockstar last season and don’t know Suzie, go to your favorite P2P service and download Suzie McNeil — Bohemian Rhapsody. Awesome stuff — puts Queen’s version to shame, and that is saying something!

i don’t think that Kellie will WIN the competition but i do think that she will go far.
you people that think she is stuck up, imagine YOURSELF in her position. if my mom left me and my dad was in jail i would go into MAJOR depression. i think it is amazing how well she handles it. anyways, i do think she has been doing well and that she will get near the end of the show.
(my favorites… Katherine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Elliott Yamin (good VOICE), and Kevin!! he is adorable… dont think he has the best voice though…

Kellie is what I consider to be the perfect defintion of an American Idol. She is beautiful inside and out, she has a beautiful singing voice, and she melts my heart everytime I see/hear her. I can relate to her story so much, and I she is an inspiration to me. She is a very strong person for being able to cope with everything that has happened in her life. If you ask me, Kellie and Chris are gonna be the last two to square off in the finale. I like Taylor Hicks to a point but do not think he is idol material. I believe he is going to go far, but his fans can only put him in so far. He will probably make it to the Top 5, but thats it. Paris and Mandisa go the same way. Kellie Pickler is awesome and I’m a bit disgusted to read some of the tacky things that people have been writing.
#1 – She isn’t fake. All that you see is real. Simon Cowell himself has stated that Kellie and Ace are both “pretty” people that most will not expect to be that shy, sweet or normal…but in his words “I assure you they are”. However, even if it was fake…I think Jessica Simpson has made millions using the fake “dumb blonde” act. But, I believe Kellie is real. She isn’t dumb, just inexperienced to the world. Being in a local pageant and a local singing competition doesn’t make her worldly. Geez!
#2 Why can’t people just admire her positive attributes instead of trying to tear her down for them. You’ve not walked a mile in her shoes. She has had a hard life. Give the girl a break. I can’t imagine having a father in and out of jail my entire life and a mother that just abandoned me. How hard it must’ve been for her. Yet this girl rose above it all with a wonderful and positive spirit and outlook on life. She is what more of our life idols should be. Her grandparents did a wonderful job and should be proud.
#3 She never said that she’s never performed in front of people before. She said she’s never sang with a band like this – and I imagine she hasn’t. This is the big time…with truly talented musicians. Heck, Kellie didn’t even know what key to sing in…because she admitted not knowing keys. She is a natural…that’s never been formally trained. Think about that. Paris and Mandissa have had years and years of training. Mandissa is a music major. Paris comes from generations of singers. Imagine what Kellie could be if she had half of that in her life. Again, give the girl a break. Considering where she comes from and the lack of training that she’s had – I’m proud of the girl! She’s amazing…and with time and additional coaching – that girl has the potential to go far!
#4 Lastly, she is not Carrie Underwood and is not even from the same area of the country. They’re both blondes…whoopey whoo! Brittney and Jessica are both blondes…are they the same? Madonna and Christina are both blondes (currently)…are they the same? No! So lay off it. Kellie is Kellie…original and beautiful.
In closing, I find Kellie a breath of fresh air. I am glad that in this time, when so much ugliness plagues our news, our music, our movies, etc….that here stands what is still beautiful within the youth of our world. I’d rather her be what my child admires, than the tabloid trashy teens currently on them. I love Kellie! May the wings of love lift her to the highest heights.

Kellie had me at the auditions… that Southern accent, her roller skates and her story. She’s been a favorite of everyone since the beginning, me included.
The only thing I would like to see her do is to have more fun and not try so hard, sometimes she tends to oversing and just belt the song out there. She’s got the voice, incredible talent, she just needs to enjoy herself and her music again. When that happens, America WATCH OUT! American Idol is about being consistant. Kellie was very good in her audition but then there was a slight problem. American Idol has been on for a while now and Kellie didnt sound anything like her audition until March 21st. A true singer should be able to be consistant and sing every song really good and sing it their own way. For example, Chris Daughtry has been able to sing great every time no matter what song it is. Kellie should have done the same. Kellie’s performances should be WOW ..not just alright. Kellie has a great voice but she obviously can only sing certain songs…songs that are easy and dont make her take any risks. This should not make her the American Idol.

I believe if she dosen’t win then that was just not what God had in plan for her, but she is there for a reason and I think that the reason is so she will win! kellie probably wont win, imo, because she is too similar to carrie. and not that its a bad thing, because its really not fair for one person to be marked as “the country girl” (if kellie came first, and carrie second, i think carrie would be facing the same problem) i just think people might want something new.

Kellie, despite other views, is both a unique individual (as we all are) and a unique performer.
It’s fairly typical both on the internet (and life in general) that when somebody starts to become prominent, plenty of people will step forward to speak poorly of that person and put her down.

You people really need to stop comparing Kellie Pickler to Carrie Underwood. First of all Carrie sings so much better than Kellie and unlike Kellie Carrie was very consistant throughout the competition. Kellie shouldnt be on American Idol. I could see her doing local competitions but how in the world did this girl get on TV and on one of the biggest talent competitions?? That is completely messed up. She has a really good voice, but apparently when you get her on stage and add some music she cant sing worth a you know what. For some reason Kellie just doesnt sound too good on stage. Yeah her audition was great but that is about it. She is no where near as good as all the others on the show. She has the likeablity factor because people like comedy…they like dumbasses similiar to Jessica Simpson (btw..kellie is even more ignorant than jessica..sad huh)..and the other majority of kellie’s fans are girls 12 and under or hormonal guys. Kellie is adorable. If you don’t fall in love with her everytime you see her, you don’t have a heart. People need to realize that in this day and age vocals are not the most important factor. If that were true we would have a bunch of famous ugly girls that sing like Mariah Carey. Kellie has a great body, a positive attitude, she is pretty and she has a nice voice. I can’t think of any other remaining girl in the competition with a nice body. definitly not Katherine or Paris. So her voice isn’t the best. But look at other famous singers from America. Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Madonna all have nice voices, but by no means are they the best, actually Kellie sings better, yet they were all very successful and that sold millions of albums. I think she will be the last female on the show I don’t know if she would win the guys are pretty fierce but its not impossible.

Kellie is a terrific fresh talent, however, I do believe Chris will be the winner. In my opionion American Idol, was originally thought up to produce a unique “Rock” Idol. I think Chris is the first to come along that fits the bill. He is exactly what “they” had in mind when they first aired the program. Thats not to say Kellie wont go on to a new singing career…….along with probably one of the first recording contracts and new cds of the fall. I think Kellie did an awesome job through out the entire audition. She seems to be a very sweet girl, and there seems to be a lot of hatred out there towards her, I don’t know why?! Maybe their messed up in the head! Some of her songs weren’t the best, but I believe that God has an awesome plan for Kellie, and if she follows him, I think she’ll do just fine. Hmmmmm…..after reading all of these comments abt Kelly Pickler, the people who bashed Kelly are friggin Naive! I know everyone has their own opinions and have thr right. We may be clueless at times but that doesn’t mean we r dumb? She is naive yes, but she has great intentions. She’s a great singer and yet she made it through and got voted off. That’s ok! She may have more opportunites that may be in her path.

omg i feel so bad for keely becuz she got voted off of american idoll mke and my mom were bawling our eyes out when she got kicked off…..i miss her so much…. my mom said ” i am never gunna watch this show nomore becuz she got kicked off”…. i felt so bad for her i cant stop thinkin about her gettin kicked off and i was always voted for her and i only voted for her….

Thank god Kellie got voted off the show. I’m not quite sure what all you people saw in her, but while reading all your posts, it all became clear to me. Half of you people dont know correct grammer, or even how to spell simple words. You also put apostrophes where they dont belong, and leave them out of where they are supossed to be. Seems the only people who know a lick of the English language are the ones who don’t like her. Look, she has an OK singing voice, and she’s pretty good looking. She’s also as dumb as a stone, or pretends to be, which is even worse, and she lied about performing in front of people before. I dont know…she was just OK in my book…certinly not one of the favorites. As for her mom and dad story…It’s sad and heart wrenching, but why would i want you to win the competition because of that? She had like 10,000,000 reasons why she should win the competition, and not 1 of them was how good she sings, because she doesn’t.

P.S. It’s me again from the above comment…Why are all you people talking about how she is an honest and genuine person like you play bingo together or something. Of course it was an act. Probably everyone who’s ever been on the show put on some kind of act. I dont know if they were actually telling the truth, but one person actually said that they met Kellie, and she was a total snob to everyone who wasn’t good looking. I can totally see her being one of those people. All I know is I absolutely hated Kellie Pickler, because while she sailed through the show from a lot of america voting for her stupidity, good people left the show. If she got voted off after Katherine or Chris, or Taylor, you know the people who can actually sing well, I never would have watched the show again. I really do believe that a lot of people forget that it IS a singing competition, and why wont you vote for the best singer? One person mentioned that Brittany Spears, and J Lo aren’t that good at singing but they are good looking, so why can’t Kellie pull it off? Well, I’ll tell you why. Because I dont want another J Lo or Brittany Spears, I want someone on a SINGING competition who can actually SING good. Personality, for all anyone knows, is FAKE on the show. Wow…So next year I should just go on American Idol, and act like a complete moron to get into the top 12. Seriously, I can’t tell you how many times I heard about salmon swimming upstream in middle school. I mean she did graduate third grade…right? She has been to a major supermarket, right? As for all you people saying that people are jealous of Kellie Pickler…I can say with absolute certianty that not one person who wrote “bad” things about her is jealous. They were sick of good singers getting kicked off (i.e. Lisa Tucker) while Kellie got through with one good performance in her audition, and the stupid/feel sorry for me act. Sure the story about her parents was sad, but I’m sure 800,000 other people have the story. Do they all “deserve” to be the American Idol? Nobody’s jaded, and nobody’s jealous. Maybe a little pissed off that the stupid/feel sorry for me act got her so far. Someone please point out to me where all the good performances were so I can go back and watch, because as far as i could tell in almost all of her performances she was flat, and forgot words, and basiclly just sucked. Why can we not vote for the good singers? Kellie Pickler was just OK…she doesn’t even come close, singing wise, to Katherine, Chris D, Taylor, and Elliot…can anyone tell me seriously that they think she does?

Give it a rest people. Not everyone knows that the “L” in salmon is silent. Do you have any idea how many people I’ve seen misspell the word “probably” as “prolly”. You’re on the internet so you should know that not everyone always says (or spells) everything perfectly.
I like Kellie Pickler. She’s pretty, cute, and talented. I think she’s a very nice girl. She was not the best singer on American Idol this year, but she was one of the best. She deserved to make top 6 and probably further. Taylor Hicks is a bit of a joke. His voice is alright but his on-stage antics are WAY over the top. I would have preferred Kellie, Katharine, Elliott, or Paris to win over him.
Is Kellie too similar to Carrie? Who cares, I love ‘em both. You can never have too many cute, sweet, blonde country girls. ^_^

Kellie…so much to like about her. After 4 seasons of Idol, I finally “tuned in” after catching a brief shot of her audition. Great voice, great smile, and a genuine appreciation for the opportunity Idol gave a “small-town girl”.

Kellie has, indeed, sung in front of people and is no stranger to the stage. Eventually, she even changed her statement to “I’ve only sang in the shower before”, which is an even lamer lie. Kellie won a county beauty pageant when she was 17 and subsequently competed to become Miss North Carolina. Oh, and her talent at both pageants? It wasn’t baton twirling. Do ‘Broken Wing’ and ‘Independence Day’ sound familiar to you? And in beauty pageants, don’t they wear fake eyelashes? The kind Kellie was talking about never having worn before? That’s not all. Just last year, Kellie competed in a North Carolina version of American Idol called Gimme the Mike! which had a large audience. She won 2nd place after si nging a bum note (Kellie, sing a bum note? Never!) and had plenty of television exposure on this show as well. She also sang at the opening of evil empire Walmart in her hometown. No matter how you slice it, that’s more than just “in the shower”. It’s obvious that by pretending that she has never sung in front of an audience before, Kellie can use nerves as her excuse for singing poorly when that’s probably not the case at all.

Kellie should have won American Idol. What is wrong with America letting Taylor win? Kellie has a great voice and made American Idol fun! After she was voted off the show I didn’t care who won the competition because none of the contestants stood out like Kellie. She was an inspiration to many young people. I don’t think her personally was “put on” at all. I believe she remained true to herself. I hope Kellie goes far and produces many records! I will definately buy them!

I think Kelly is sincere with a great personality. She is a great singer and I love to watch her on TV. She is funny and, well…we know that laughter is like a healing medicine!
