The skating pairs are challenged to complete side-by-side jumps and a one-legged lunge in their routines. They skate to the background musical them of songs from the top forty. Kristy Swanson and Lloyd Eisler skate first. Their previous performances have been sporadic, ranging from first place to last place. Judge John Nicks calls their performance, “pretty good, pretty good.” The judges award the couple with the highest score so far of the competition.
As good as the first performance was, Jillian Barberie and John Zimmerman are just as good if not better. They receive a standing ovation from two of the judges. Judge Dorothy Hamill says “I’ve seen pros that don’t do as well as you two.” However, Judge John Nicks accuses them of unnecessary repetition in their performance. The judges award them with the very same high score that they gave to Kristy and Lloyd.
Dave Coulier and Nancy Kerrigan slow things down with a less than spectacular performance. Watching Dave struggle through the performance makes it obvious that female celebrities probably have the advantage in the competition as they can at least follow the lead of the professional male skaters. In Dave’s case, it is probably to much to ask for him to learn all of the lifts and moves necessary to take the lead in the performance. Judge John Nicks says “I thought the routine was a little uninteresting.”
Bruce Jenner and Tai Babilonia give a good performance, but they wind up skating off the ice. Judge John Nicks complains that Bruce’s knees were stiff. Despite the mistake and the stiffness, Bruce & Tai score enough points with the judges to land in third place. Dave Coulier and Nancy Kerrigan wind up with the lowest score of the night and are eliminated from the competition.
The total judges scores for each performance are listed below:
Jillian Barberie and John Zimmerman – Score a combined total of 55.9 points out of 60.
Bruce Jenner and Tai Babilonia – Score a combined total of 54.7 points out of 60.
Dave Coulier and Nancy Kerrigan – Score a combined total of 52.7 points out of 60.
Kristy Swanson and Lloyd Eisler – Score a combined total of 55.9 points out of 60.
