Much of the early buzz about the girls on American Idol 5 has centered around Paris Bennett and Kellie Pickler, but it’s starting to look like there might be a new sheriff in town. Katharine McPhee is a twenty-one year old from Sherman Oaks, California, and she has emerged as not only one of the best singers in the competition but also as one of the most lively and entertaining personalities.
Music and acting seems to run in Katharine’s genes, as her mom is a L.A. cabaret singer named Peisha McPhee who has an album called “Out of the Blue” and also had a role in the TV movie “The Incredible Hulk Returns.” Katharine herself has starred as Anna Muir in “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” and as Annie Oakley in “Annie Get Your Gun.” The Annie Oakley performance earned Katharine a nomination for an Ovation Award from the L.A. Stage Alliance. Katharine also has a role in an upcoming independent film called “Crazy.”
During the most recent round of American Idol cuts that led to the top 24, Katharine McPhee delivered one of the best deadpan comedy lines of the night. Katharine told Ryan Seacrest that she was really upset about fellow contestant Crystal Stark getting cut. When Ryan told Katharine that she could tell the judges that they made a mistake when she went upstairs, Katharine quipped, “I mean I’m not like so angry,” which cracked up the entire room.
When Katharine McPhee did finally make it upstairs, she became the first American Idol contestant to officially make it to the top 24. Randy, Paula, and Simon each puckered up and gave Katharine a kiss on the lips to congratulate her. When Katharine got back downstairs, she told the other contestants, “and the best part, I kissed all three judges on the lips.” When Ace Young asked who was the best, she responded that Randy was the best because his kiss was “really luscious and like delicious.” Katharine’s energy and humor helped to add a burst of energy to what is often a sad part of the American Idol process.
The judges aren’t the only ones going crazy for Katharine. Fans sites for Katharine McPhee are located at Katharinefans.com, Katharine-McPhee.net, and Katharine-McPhee.org. Reality TV Magazine recently caught up with Chad Hensley, who runs Katherinefans.com. Chad told Reality TV Magazine, “I made Katharinefans.com to create a central place for all her fans to come and support her run to stardom. From the moment I saw Katharine sing in the first audition, I knew she was something special. She has the “Girl next door” look, and sings like an angel. Girls across the country, and world for that matter, can identify with her and use her as a role model because she doesn’t look like Barbie, but is still amazingly beautiful. She could be America’s sweetheart, with a little sass, as we saw both on American Idol Wednesday night when they cut the contestant pool to 24. Girls love her, guys love her, and America is going to soon learn just how talented and gorgeous she really is.”
So what are Katharine McPhee’s chances of taking home the prize of American Idol? Does she have the kiss of an American Idol champion? We wouldn’t bet against her, and it seems like a lot of other people wouldn’t bet against her either, because according to a recent press release by PinnacleSports.com, she has the best odds of any girl to win and is second only to Ace Young.
