More Inconsistent Behavior By American Inventor Judges

April 06, 2006 11:13 PM by Joe Blackmon

Carseat_americaninventorOn the premiere episode of American Inventor, the judges turned away Ann Brazil, who had invented a DVD called Time-Out Tot that helped parents with a child’s character development.  Ann had a heartwarming story because the invention came about from her own experience with her mildly retarded son.  However, Peter Jones didn’t feel it was a real invention, and Mary Lou Quinlan felt like she was just using the show for publicity, so Ann did not make it through to the next round.

On the most recent American Inventor, Joan Colvin is the inventor of the character building buddy.  Joan tells the judges that there are no toys or tools that a parent has to teach children character.  The character building buddy is essentially a bear that children can stuff with parts as parents read them a guide about character.  This time the judges seem bowled over by the idea of a toy that teaches children character, and even Peter Jones gives it a “yes, yes, yes.”  Even though the judges were quick to point out when other inventions were already on the market, none of the judges pointed out that the character building buddy is very similar to toys that can be found at Build-A-Bear stores across the U.S.  This isn’t to say that Joan shouldn’t have made it through, it just seems inconsistent that Joan made it and Ann didn’t.

Other inventions that made it through on American Inventor’s final audition round included a dial-a-cup coffee maker and a spherical car seat for babies.  Even though the spherical car seat looked like something that would be difficult to fit into a car, the story behind the invention is very sad, but also inspirational.  Janusz Liberkowski lost his daughter in a car accident, and his motivation is to create an invention to spare other parents the heartbreak that he went through.  The spherical car seat was a case where the American Inventor judges got it right in recognizing an invention with potential.

The majority of the episode actually focused on the more unusual inventions that didn’t make it through.  Inventions that were turned down included a toilet odor clearer, a rotating centerpiece, a remote leash, car armor, a coffee ring portable brewing system, and our personal favorite a CD that says the same thing over and over again so you don’t have to keep repeating yourself to your child.

The ratings for the show are steadily declining. I think a large part of it is the inconsistency and randomness of the judges. They all seem to be going by gut instinct and there is not one jude whose judgement I trust.

Eddie Van Halen in his normal state DRUNK could do a better job of judging this show.

Simon, I will make this clear, get rid of that buffoon Doug.

I would be interested in purchasing Joan Colvin’s character building buddy. Unlike the build a bear it comes with a story that we can interact in our homes with our children. Any way I can get one?

I was very impressed by Joan Colvin and her Character-building Buddy! How do we let her know we want to Buy it? Children need quality time with parents doing something so important!

http://www.CharacterBuildingBuddy.com She is great.. Wish she made it all the way to the last round… Really loved those bears.. Some say it was an infringement off the Bild A Bear Workshop because of the heart piece.. I say they are nothing alike.. Go Joan! It seems she has made it further than others as she already sells them online, and at Legoland, as well as a few other locations..
