American Idol: Will Bleep Controversy Send Paris Bennett Home?

May 03, 2006 01:17 AM by Joe Blackmon

Parisbennettsh_1What would American Idol be without controversy?  The American Idol Top Five performance show has some viewers crying foul over an incident that occurred during the show involving one of the contestants.  Is it that Katharine McPhee got two stage musicians or that Chris Daughtry got an elaborate fire background?  Or is it that Taylor Hicks fell on his back or that Katharine McPhee fell to her knees?  Maybe, it’s that Simon Cowell finally said something positive to Taylor Hicks

No, the big controversy brewing is actually over a little bleeped out audio that occurred while Paris Bennett was performing “Be Without You.”  The lyrics to this Mary J. Blige song go “We’ve been through it (yes).  We got real sh** (yes).”  Except when Paris got to the s-word, the sound was bleeped out.  According to posters on the American Idol message board, the bleep apparently only occurred during the East Coast and Central broadcasts, and there wasn’t a bleep on the West Coast broadcast.  West Coast viewers are reporting that Paris never said the dreaded s-word, but actually just went shh, like is done in the radio version of the song.

So why is this controversial if Paris didn’t really cuss?  It’s controversial because when the sound was bleeped out for viewers in the Southern, Central and Eastern United States, it gave the impression that Paris had said a bad word.  In the conservative South, many viewers could be turned off by the thought of Paris using a profanity during a family show.  The bleeped audio could very well cost Paris Bennett votes, and considering that Paris was in the bottom two last week, she likely needs every vote that she can get.

Calling all Americans! Please save Paris from this disaster. For weeks after weeks, she has shown she has indeed vast tremendous talent. She is indeed a superstar for someone at her age of 17. Please be sensible and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE and KEEP VOTING for PARIS. The person who deserves the boot is Elliot!!! SAVE PARIS AND SEND ELLIOT PACKING.

    Long live Paris!!!!

It doesn’t matter if Paris was bleeped or not. She’s going because it’s her turn to go. She has been on the bottom for weeks and last night was no different. It’s only fair that she goes. The other four are so much better. The order is this:
    1) Katherine
    2) Taylor
    3) Chris
    4) Elliot
    5) Paris

I do feel that when Paris was bleeped on purpose for no reason that it sent a message too the viewers that she said something bad and that it would cost her some votes.

Also, I do feel that Paris has never had a strong fan base because, despite her obvious talent the judges will critque her much harsher than they will the rest of the contestants. In other words, I guess the judges do want to be accused of favoritism towards her because, of her family connections.

To mr. showbiz you are retarded just because Paris is in the bottom three or two doesn’t mean that it is her time she is the best singer in the competition but she doesn’t have a strong fan base so how can you say that it is her turn to go?

Paris is the best female singer remaining. Katharine butchered Phil Collins last night – but it’s “Against All Odds” that she’ll get voted off, which is a shame. She is over rated, gets by on looks more than talent, and should be the next to go.

Hey everybody. Well I did watch the show last night and I think people are making a big deal that paris said SSSSS. She is talented and I respect her grandamother. I absolutley support her and everyone please vote her. When Lisa Tucker sang my song Because of you she said the word Damn as it is in the lyrics and people didn’t make a big deal out of it so please vote for paris bennett all the way!!!!

Actually, Paris was my 3rd favorite last night. Some weren’t thrilled on her song choices, but she was only 3 of 5 that were on key consistently. Katharine and Chris were off last night, but Paris will end up leaving, unfortunately. She really shows so much more emotion than Chris and Kat in her songs and has a great vocal range.

The Paris controversary pales in comparison to all the blatant AND subliminal negative things that have been said on air and done to Taylor Hicks…that includes two alcohol-related comments from Simon Cowell. Taylor rarely drinks so it was doubly hard on him. He and the Soul Patrol have moved on . . . so should Paris and her fans.

I hope the incident with the bleep
does not affect Paris and I would also like to know what kind of weddings they have in England,or at least what kind of weddings Simon attends? He has made the remark about Taylor Hicks performances being “like a drunk dad at a wedding” and again last night it was like dad at a wedding,at least he dropped the’drunk’ part. Why does he hate Taylor so much? For Paris fans we know what your feeling,as we have been going through this the whole competition…..Soul Patrol

I had’nt noticed the bleep out, but I’m not familar with the song. Hopefully something like that will not effect her votes, her singing and being so young should take care of that. Why would the contestants pick a song with any bad words in it anyway? Please, there are to many songs choices out there. Watch yourselves next time…. This is supposed to be a family show, even though you would’nt know that from some of the judges comments ( Simon in paticular)

Well, Paris, is obviously the more well-groomed, seasoned, and all-around performer of th ebunch. Nobody even comes close to her enormous talent. I was shocked when I heard the bleep as she sung the Mary song. I was, like, what is going on? I mean, does anyone really think that Paris would curse on a family show like AI? I mean come on. She’s obvious the best female vocalist left in the competition and she would never let a song “run away from her” like Katherine did with her first song. I mean, at this stage in the competition, how can you person that badly? Her vocals were all over the place. Just a mess. Hopefully, America remembered that last night and didn’t vote for Katherine. She was just bad!

Lets look at this competition without being bias towards your favotirte for whatever reason. Paris has a few things agaianst her. For one, She is connected. she doesn’t need American Idol. She could have a cd in an hour. Its not fair to those who have no connections, or money, to present an opportunity to them. The others took a chance and made it to where they are now the only window open to those who are not as lucky as Paris. Lastly, Paris has not shown ahe can sing a full range. When she sang “Breathe” by Leanne Rhymes she screeched and cracked. Katherine has a broader range.Katherine does have a great look to market but so does Paris, and Doughtry.Katherine has proved her range and her being able to hold a note longer than 10 seconds.Chris can sing well, but also, can’t hold a note for too long. He simgs great metal music, but i think metal is a thing of the past.he needs one wow performance and he will clinch the competition. same for Kattherine. Taylor is entertaining, sings very well, but he too has to sing a song that has more than two words in it, and needs to prove he can hold a note. Something needs to be done with his hair. for marketing purposes. Elliot sings fantastic.I think charisma is missing or some kind of spunk when performing. I’m not sure without being bias.I’m trying to look at them objectuively. From what I see and hear,(when they perform), Katherine and Chris will be our final two.

  16. Kehelia Says:

What’s age got to do with Paris? She has the pipes and can sing, she earned the right to be on American Idol. Just because she is connected does not mean the money or the exposure is there to give her what AI has to offer. With the AI exposure she does not have to shop around for offers, they will come to her.

I think that Paris is going next. She is the least talented of the top 5. Here’s how I ranked the performances:

    1.Chris 2
    2.Chris 1
    3.Taylor 2
    4.Katharine 2
    5.Elliott 1
    6.Elliott 2
    7.Taylor 1
    8.Katharine 1
    9.Paris 1
    10.Paris 2

    Bottom 2:
    Elliott
    Paris

    Going Home:

If America is voting on performances, Paris will not be going anywhere tonight. She’s the most talented one left and she outsang them all last night. If America doesn’t vote on talent, it doesn’t matter. Paris will go on to great success anyway. :)

If this is a family show, why was Shakira on the air half naked and shaking her body like that. Please, America is so double standard and when an African American person do something, (which she did not? it’s a problem. Sorry, it’s just my viewpoint.

  21. Trish Says:
    May 3rd, 2006 at 5:03 pm

I think Paris will go tonight. I do not think the bleep is such a big deal. I do think trying to sing a song by Prince was a mistake and it is going to cost her. I think it is going to be a guy that wins this year. I am torn between Chris and Taylor, either one will do the title proud.

  22. Anonymous Says:

The S-word is a common word. Even 5 year olds say it and I have heard it. So it’s not a big deal. Seducing Simon is what Kellie did. Like someone mentioned before, Shakira’s perfomance was more of a rated R perfomance. The s word is not a big deal. We all say it at times. This is just another excuse to vote her off

  23. Reggie J Says:

Well, America this is what you wanted isn’t it? This young lady is probably going to go but not because of her ability but because of her youth and not at all because of her color. This is American Idol isn’t it where we vote for who we like and not who is the best, right? Well like the popular choice we have in office, we may like the person but it’s not alway’s the best choice. If Paris is voted off, I hope Chris wins because he is the best not the least or most popular. Half of the people voting is not going to support the champ anyway. Katherine is pretty but not the best by far!!

Here’s my take. Up until last week, the producers of AI had only male performers guest star and help the contestants. Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, Queen, Barry Manilow, etc. Anyway, Where are all the female artists that can help pull the weight of some of our fantastic female singers that have already gotten the boot? Come on Madonna…slap a little soul in to Taylor…..or, hey you, Cher, I’m sure you could teach a little something to Chris… and we can’t leave out Dolly Parton, who could really put some “twang” in to Elliott’s charisma.
    Just my food for thought!

Paris has done extremely well from the start of idol this season. She was my #1 pick along the journey. Her ability to perform was strong wether she sang in or out of her element, which shows a performers flexibility. I have little doubt that we will be seeing her in the future even though her idol spot has expired. Way to go Paris!

Paris had to go – she is connected and spoiled – Lisa on the other hand deserved to be given a better chance to show her talents – but Paris was right there to take up all the vote from her – because she is so connected to the big time mama … Too bad that it isn’t more fair – Taylor is another example of hogging all the votes from some of the others who can sing him to shame – ….Simon said it all when describing this gray haired wonder clown ….
“Drunken singer at a wedding party” …. Who’s listening to his yelling …screaming and kicking the stage apart ? Send this bum home with his mouth organ !!!
