In true David vs. Goliath fashion, Elliott Yamin just took out the man that many considered to be the giant in the American Idol 5 competition. Elliott Yamin had been consistent during most of the competition, which allowed him to slip into the top four undetected. Then, with perfect timing, Elliott shocked the world with not one but two breakout performances.
The performances propelled Elliott all the way from a likely fourth place finish into the top two with Taylor Hicks. This left Chris Daughtry in a battle with Katharine McPhee to avoid elimination. Even though Katharine McPhee wound up receiving the most criticism from the judges, it might actually have worked to her advantage. Katharine McPhee fans knew they had to vote in massive numbers to keep their favorite singer safe.
Chris Daughtry fans on the other hand probably assumed that he was likely safe thanks to Katharine’s struggles. In fact if the judges hadn’t been so harsh on Katharine, it might have actually woken up Daughtry fans to the fact that he was at risk. Daughtry’s performances were actually quite good, but he played it safe. Elliott Yamin went for the knock out, and he nailed it. Even if Elliott goes home next week (which we don’t think he will), American Idol viewers will likely never forget the night that Elliott slayed the giant.
