American Idol: Taylor & Katharine Deliver The Best Idol Finale Performance Show Ever!

Simon Cowell offered the following advice to start off the show, “I would suggest that the contestants pray that the other one forgets the words.” Well, if either one of them said that prayer, then it was an unanswered prayer, because both Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee delivered. The American Idol finale proved to be like watching two great teams play in the Super Bowl, neither willing to give an inch. Except unlike the Super Bowl where the winner is known at the end of the game, America won’t know the winner of this battle royal until tomorrow night.
Katharine McPhee’s first song was “Black Horse In The Cherry Tree.” Randy Jackson said “I actually think you sang it better this time than the first time you did it.” Paula Abdul said “It was a fun opening.” Simon Cowell said “Kat, I’ll give that a good with a small g.”
Taylor Hicks first song was “Living For The City.” Randy Jackson said “America that’s a hot one right there.” Paula Abdul said “Way to go, way to open up the show.” Simon Cowell said “It was a great way to start the show. It was a smart choice of song. It’s arguable the worst jacket I’ve ever seen in my life, but what do I know. Let me tell you, round one to you.”
Katharine McPhee’s second song was “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” Randy Jackson said “Check it out, you worked it out again.” Paula Abdul said “You’ve made everyone proud, and every little girl proud who wants to dream and aspire to be you. Congratulations, you owned it up there.” Simon Cowell said “I truly believe this was your best performance of the competition so far, you’re back in the game.”
Taylor Hicks’ second song was “Levon.” Randy Jackson said “It was a little pitchy for me.” Paula Abdul said “I think what may be pitchy for you is the essence of who Taylor is.” Simon Cowell said “I think you walked the first round. I think Katharine has taken the second round, and I think it’s all to play for.”
Katharine McPhee’s third song was “My Destiny.” Randy Jackson said “You look amazing, you sounded really good, I did not love the song.” Paula Abdul said “Listen that is not your fault Katharine, because you are brilliant” Simon Cowell said “In my opinion, you went from brilliant to quite good in one song.”
Taylor Hicks’ third song was “Do I Make You Proud.” Randy Jackson said “Based on the song, I think this is a slightly better song, but you know what I love about you, what I’ve always loved about you since day one, you know who Taylor Hicks is, and no matter what the song is, you know how to make it into a Taylor Hicks’ vehicle.” Paula Abdul said “I couldn’t agree with Randy more.” Simon Cowell said “Taylor, ok, assuming that I was right that the show was tied, then you just won American Idol.”
So who is going to win American Idol? We think it is going to be very close. It was the best Idol finale performance show ever, as both singers gave championship performances. We really think this could go either way, but because we need to make a prediction, we’re giving the edge to Taylor Hicks. ya know, whoever wins and whoever doesn’t will both benefit substantially from this show. in recent seasons, the runner-up usually does almost as good as the winner. so to Kat fans: she will have a career win or lose. to Taylor fans: he will also have a career win or lose. that being said, let the pointless bickering and trash talk begin…

From the moment I heard Katharine in her audition, I said she would win and become the new American Idol of season 5. I am sticking by my girl.
However…Taylor gave us a run for our money (or votes) and I am afraid to say that I think he has a bigger fan base. That said, I don’t mean to undermine Katharine. She is an amazing, beautiful vocalist.
Regardless of who is crowned the new American Idol, they are truyly both stars and are bound to be extremely sucessful.

Both sang very well. I feel Taylor sang just a little better than Katherine this evening. Over the rainbow of course was her best performance. Taylor’s song to be released genuinely moved me. Katherine’s song was beautiful but a little more pitchy. Taylor will be the 2006 American Idol.

Katherine McPhee has a very good voice, though i used to be a Taylor Hicks fan until one day I had my tv up loud while i went to go grab something to drink and i noticed that he hade pretty bad vocals. My votes go to KAT!!

Katherine Did Not Forget Her Words Because She USED A TELEPROMPTER
Watch the tape of the last song in two seperate shots from behind looking into the audience you can clearly see the screen with words moving up it as she sings. The first shot is long enough where you can see the it scrolling.

I think Taylor will win. He has great charisma and knows how to win over a crowd. However, if he does win, I think he will flop as a recording star. He has tremendous charm and stage presence – he is a born performer. BUT he can’t sing. He should stick to stage concerts, where I think he will do very well.
Katherine CAN sing – she has extraordinary talent. I think that even if she does not win first place, she will still have an amazing career. My vote is for her. Good luck, Kat!

Sure Taylor is likeable guy but but Katherine is capable of reaching much higher in her career whereas Taylor has reached his limit … his vocals are just not there .
his singing style is out of style .. what kind of record could he possibly make ? Joe Cocker’s greatest hits ? If I want to listen to Joe Cocker I go out and buy Joe Cocker CD . It’s good music but Joe Cocker does it better . Taylor got a lot of praise today for doing his ‘own thing’ … uhmm I don’t get .

Don’t pay attention to the Donna Lane comments. I’ve seen her name several different places and she only has negative comments. Someone has to be pretty miserable to feel the need to bash everyone. If you think it’s that bad, do us all a favor and don’t watch.

To the person who didnt have the brass to leave their name: Wasn’t tring to be hateful or mean, just stating a fact. Check out the VFTW website. Initally they threw their support behind kelly but then picked up taylor once she was gone.If we are to believe the percents that were posted when elliot was eliminated the it’s a pretty close race. People who support the website give taylor an unfair advantage.

Kathryn got a big strike against her in the public eye for repeating the same song from last week. It says two things to the public, 1st, she was too lazy to learn another song & 2nd, she doesn’t have versatily. She sang the song a lot better last week.
That first outfit Kathryn had on tonight made her look pregnant.
Taylor has a great voice, great presentation and style! I predict he will win Best New Artist of the Year and Best Entertainer of the year. Taylor is truly the BEST!
P.S. I don’t think American Idol should allow anyone to repeat a song during the contest.

I’m extremely disappointed with the writing for the contestants’ final songs. Neither were really that good and the judges were quick to point that out. And what’s with the music writers giving Katherine parts to that song that were above her range? These songs are suppose to accentuate the artist…not push them past their limits…cause let’s face it…while she did her best to push through it, that certainly didn’t help her with the already tough love judges.
Besides, if they(especially Randy) could be any more hypocritical I’d say they were extremely biased. Randy’s comment about Taylor being courageous and not caring who he sings is so unfair…when Kat does it they lay into her for trying to be the big star(be it Whitney or whoever)…just isn’t right.

If you dont think Taylor will sell you are crazy. You cannot feel the music. Every time he performs people go nuts! On top of that he actually sings really good. I go to sleep every time Kat sings. There is nothing special about her performances, and tonight she did the exact same ones she already did. Note to Kat: Put on a classy dress, dim the lights and sing over the rainbow! Zack, you’re kidding me right? First off the only song either of them had to “learn” this week was their new songs. The other two were repeats. And besides, to not take a song that the judges all agreed was the “best performance of the competition” and use it to try to win the competition would be foolish…and if you’re still not in agreement you need to look no further than Randy’s comments where he was apprehensive and yet he liked it anyway(which is high praise considering how hard he’s been on her lately).

Another thing artist put themselves at a disadvantage against Taylor because they never move when they are on stage. I counted 16 different camer shots for Taylor because he was dancing and moving in the crowd. Kat had 3. And 3 = boring! Taylor will win in a landslide and he will back it up again when he out performs her tommorrow!

I am a Taylor fan….but in all fairness to Kat, I di agree w/ Littlefields comment about the song selections for their 1st singles. I felt that Kat really seemed to struggle w/ the song, where Taylor breezed on thru… at first Taylor seemed a bit uneasy…but then he nailed it. I cannot say that about Kat… but I think it was the song, or should I say wrong song chosen for her. It was out of her range & it made her sound off key. Poor Kat… but with that being said… go Taylor!!!!!

The only conspiracy theory has nothing to do with the producers nor the contestants. It’s the JOURNALISTS – THE WRITERS OF THIS WEBSITE. With so much BIAS and ONE-SIDED reporting against Kat (please take a look at the other articles on this site), it is so obvious that Kat has been put in a bad light by the writers here. Provocative headline like Kat not sweet after all, Kat don’t have Arnold support etc. are deliberately done to stir emotions, so people won’t vote for Kat. While Taylor articles were full of praise and support, Kat’s articles were so biasly reported. Think about it. Just because the journalist favour Taylor Hicks, it doesn’t mean one has to hit or condemn the other.
I being a journalist won’t even do such a thing. Give both Taylor and Kat fair commentaries. Not bashing one just to make the other look good.
As I mentioned on one of the blog, this is what we call “bias reporting” and a shame to the journalist world. It’s time “freedom of speech/press” is put into order. Or we have such “rotten” journalists tarnishing this noble profession. Bearing in mind, it is also these kind of thrashy journalists that cause the death of Princess Diana……Shame to you..Shame to this ugly writers of this website!

Regarding the original songs: Yes, Kat got the shaft, because, although both songs stunk, hers was worse. But here’s the thing– when you cover someone else’s song, it’s MUCH easier, because the phrasing, breathing, styling, etc. are all worked out for you, even if you only use it as a point of departure. With an original song, you have to invent that for yourself, and Kat wasn’t up to it– she was tentative and pitchy– a stark contrast to her performance of ‘THINK’, which, to me, was much better than ‘Rainbow’.
Taylor was also pitchy on the beginning of his song– he tends to be when he sings softly– but he recovered as he went on, and managed to have a moment with a bland song, because as Randy said, he’s able to put his own stamp on most songs. I would give the night, and the title, to Taylor.
Kat has a beautiful voice– she sounds and looks like Linda Rondstadt– but she hasn’t figured out what to do with it yet. In a few years, I think she will come into her own.

I will be glad this show is over because of this person who keeps impersonating me on this board! I am tired of them and say ‘good riddance’- I would NEVER say anything bad about Kellie Pickler, she was the best talent on this show this year! How DARE they!
At any rate, I am very offended at this article saying this is the best finale. Carrie Underwood last year was sheer heaven and nothing and no one could ever match her performances! She was like an angel and it was the best television I have ever seen! Carrie is now triple-platinum and is the biggest star on the planet and deserves it- the only drawback last year was having to share a stage with Bo, but the “Lice Squad” was not able to put in enough votes for that awful person who was once arrested and should never have been on the show in the first place!
Kellie Pickler should have won this year! But she will have a bigger career than fatbutt retard Taylor Hicks or that filthy trashy garbage Katherine, who can’t sing, and only has gotten this far because she puts her boobs in people’s faces! DISGUSTING! These two are no role models! I only hope next year we can have some decent contestants who can be role models for our children!

I think it would have been difficult to give them both the same song as they have different styles…it would inevitably have been biased towards one of them(as has happened in the past).
Donna, only someone severly insecure would pick on someone they don’t know…if you don’t like the girl(and this case the guy too) then maybe you shouldn’t be posting…that whole notion of if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say it at all. Just a thought.

Who SHOULD win and who WILL win don’t relate and that’s sad!
If I hear “soul patrol” one more time I’m going to puke (and so is my wife). Taylor’s got class, is fun to watch but for some so is a NASCAR crash. For once Simon got it wrong and hopefully America will see the smoke & mirrors, but I doubt it.
I thought AI hit an all time low this season jamming Taylor down America’s throat. The judges decided early on it was going to be a male who wins this competition. It’s been all uphill for Katherine and all the female singers. Judges, all male celebs with male songs (except Over The Rainbow which Katherine excelled at) and constant adulation for male singers that would have trouble at your local karioki night. Simon had it right at the audition.
Last night was a judging disgrace and unfortunately 75% of AI voters are 11 year old girls who have been duped. If you close your eyes and listen closely there’s no way anyone would cross the street to buy a Taylor CD. Bad dancing a mild case of Touretts Syndrom doesn’t transfer to a CD very well.
I would go to the local karioki bar to watch him sing but only because I can get drunk before the contest. If you’re honest with yourself you’ll admit that while Taylor is a nice guy with class, a great personal marketer he suffers from an average voice, BAD dancing and some obvious ticks that 11 year olds seem to love. While he’s the oldest (he’s 29, looks 40, acts 15) he should have departed around 6-7 this year.
Chris, Paris, Mandisa, Katherine and even Kellie have more singing talent.
This anything but the best final. It was a disgrace!

I think Simon called the evening accurately. Taylor was fantastic in the first round; Kat shined in the second round. Then Kat had to sing that awful song and disntegrated before our eyes. She missed more than one note, couldn’t find pitch and was just all over the place–lost. However, a professional makes the most of a moment like that, they step up to the plate and she didn’t.
Taylor’s song was not great either. But he performed like hell, demonstrating that he has what it takes. Will people buy his CD’s? You bet they will. Maybe not teenagers, but since women 25-55 reign as spending queens I would say that Taylor Hicks has a very bright future before him and winning American Idol will only be the beginning.

Taylor Hicks is it! Sure Kat is great eye candy, but really fans, turn up your hearing devices because the pretty girl can’t find pitch. Great singer? Nope. Talented yes. But she needs serious vocal training. It’s a shame we lost Chris, but of what is left the winner should be Taylor Hicks.

Carrie Underwood is NOT a great singer by the way. Kelli Pickler is cute as they get but only a mediocre singer. Do you people have no knowledge about music at all? Kat is not Kelly Clarkston either. She’s okay. News for all her deaf fans: She IS pitchy.

It’s all but over if you’ve looked up the numbers. Taylor is the new AI. He’s not the most talented of the bunch but he’s also not the least and he can carry a tune which is more that can be said for Miss Kat. Even so, both of these performers are going to do well, make a lot of money and retain a strong fan base. Taylor played the game to win. He caught on early that this season was more like Survivor that AI. Congrats!

Well here it is guys down to Crowning Night.
Kat gave a great performance, lovely and talented. However, I stick to what I’ve always said – not consistant. One out of three songs were good. The problem is that she sang the same song last week and quite frankly, I don’t like that song. She did look more professional last night and did the best she could.
Taylor is always consistant, he picked the two songs HE liked, Levon was done differently, the same for LFTC. This is why I love TH – he can take a song and sing it 59 ways so each time it sounds different.
The third song Taylor blew out the house!

And the winner is….Taylor. Then again there are always surpises. AI set up Chris to look like the frontrunner and then flushed him down the toilet. Wouldn’t surprise me if they aren’t doing it with Taylor also. Katherine would be one more boring girl American Idol with sultry eyes, curvy hips and a so-so voice. Wouldn’t we all be shocked if a girl like that won–again?!!!! AI needs to stop with their own agendas and really let America make the choice. Two of this year’s brood would really sing: Mandesa and Chris.

Now let me show you what an intelligent review sounds like? First of all even though I like both Katherine and Taylor, neither of them were my choices for Idol going into this competiton. In the Girls I felt that both Paris and Mandisa were far better singers than Katherine and Kellie. As Far as the boys, I liked Elliot Yamin from day one! Even though near the end Chris D kinda grew on me…he was not consistent, and that is what this competition is all about! Consistently performing well enough to get the votes! I still feel that Elliot should be in Taylors shoes right now. I think he is a far better singer. So why in my opinion is Taylor in the top two and not Elliot? Well, I’ll tell you….Taylors onstage personality is far more dynamic! His dancing and antics are what you remember most about his performances. It’s charisma. Elliot need to improve his stage personality. Now…why arent Mandisa and Paris in the top two? Easy! Mandisa, even though a far better vocalist than any other competitor, made bad song choices…its that simple! Paris’s last few songs were not consistent in quality. Somehow, somewhere, Paris lost heart..and that my friend was her downfall. As for Kellie Pickler, I admire her and think she will be successful in the music industry….but she needs to drop the Jessica Simpson wannabe act. Which brings us down to Katherine…what can I say? If this were Survivor (Survivor 13 The Cowell Islands!) Katherine has simply outwitted, outlasted, and outperformed the competition. She does not have to be the very best singer…she just has to put together a package that is going to keep her coming back every week…and she did. I personally am rooting for Katherine to win….but if Taylor does then thats ok with me! They both have gone the distance and are going to go a lot farther. My congrats to whoever wins!

As long as we are re-hashing the whole year: Paris is talented yes, but too young. She needs more experience before she’ll be star material. And I always disliked Elliot but have to give him the most-improved award. Elliot = BORING. Mandisa? The lady could sing but what was that whole now I’m going to show off my religion thing? It was a put-off for a lot of people. Kelli? Kelli did not have a clue how to find a note. The best of the bunch are Chris, Taylor, Kat and Mandisa, in that order. Taylor will be crowned AI in my opinion because when Cat is good she’s very good but when she’s bad, she’s very very bad.

The song given to Katherine proves what her vocal range really is. Even if you believe Taylor’s song was a little bit easier, he proved he could nail it. If given the chance, I without a doubt believe Taylor could nail Katherine’s song as well. Something is wrong if Katherine only nailed one song (a song she knew she could sing well). The judges were being a little too nice last night but appropriately so. I have said this from the beginning and will continue to say Katherine should pursue Broadway. Her acting skills coupled with her vocal range will take her down a road of success. To those who think Simon doesn’t know what he is talking about, let me leave this thought for you, Simon is in the business to make people successful. He is looking for the very best to represent him. Simon is a producer; he is just not a mediocre judge. Simon has made many successful. Randy has made a few successful while Paula has made Paula successful. Swallow your pride, he is THE BEST for the show. Taylor definitely has been named American Idol. I am very confident of this. Admittedly, Chris was my first pick. Considering the three that were left, I most support Taylor. Elliot was my third choice. Don’t get me wrong, I am by far not bashing Katherine but feel she is in the wrong vocal area. She is beautiful, she does have a lovely voice. I just feel she could far better elsewhere. No matter, the top five will have a bright future. Congratulations to all of them.

Taylor will win tonight because he well-rounded in all genres of areas that it takes to make it as artist in this world. He will probably become double-platinum at most. Although I must say, American Idol failed to metion that Taylor is the first contestant to never be in the bottom 2 or 3. That says a lot. Katherine has an okay voice; but, she tends to lack the versatility and stage presence that one should have as an artist. I think so many people are blowing things out of proportion and making negative comments for no reason at all. Grow up please! When it gets down to it, both will be successful. We as viewers and voters will not be. The show is just a singing competition rigged up to suit whom they want representing them. One doesn’t benefit from it unless you are a contestant. May the best contestant win. GO TAYLOR! YOU DESERVE IT.

Taylor will win and Kat will make a gracious runner-up who will be able to get the voice coaching she needs to become a great singer.
Taylor has the stage presence and talent to be a star. Audiences love him. Look at Garth Brooks, mediocre singer and can’t dance, but does he know how to put on a show–damn straight he does. It’s the magic that Taylor has and that is what creates stars. Talent comes a dime a dozen. I’ve heard women in regional theater productions out-sing Kat. Even so, she’ll do fine

Well pesonally I have a hard time sitting through one of Kat’s songs because she is consistently inconsistent. She’s made it to the bottom three more than once. Taylor? Never. And that’s because it feels good to watch Taylor. He’s fun. He makes you smile and dance in your chair. Katharine lacks excitement and energy. She looked a deer caught in the headlines and when she was talking to Ryan and her hands were fluttering and she couldn’t make a sentence…c’mon…a star? Hardly. She is a good singer with potential and probably a great person too. She is not an Idol.

Taylor outshined Katharine on the last song because he knows who he is and has been performing for years. He knows how to make a song his own. Katharine doesn’t have the experience to do that and she messed up.
I read an interesting article where a music producer said that Taylor should win and has the talent to carry on because he’s so unique. He also mentioned that Katharine would make a good CD but it would be expensive because of all the work they’d have to do on it to make her sound good. He said that she was made for musical theatre.
Katharine needs to learn control and develop her own style. She tries too hard to be a Celine or a Mariah and winds up oversinging her songs. She may have a mom for a vocal coach, but that doesn’t guarantee talent.
Katharine will go far on her looks. She’s already stated that she’d love to do movies or TV. Musically, Taylor is more talented, hands down. His career will last because he is fresh, unique and entertains.

Taylor must win because he is the person who will make the most money for Simon and Simon. I’m not sure how fair it is when one of the judges ownes half the recording company that will profit from the AI winner and is a co-producer of the show. I laugh whenever I hear the “get rid of Simon” comments. No one gets rid of an owner and this owner obviously believes there is money star power in Taylor Hicks. I predict his CD goes platinum in a week. Why does Simon wear the smirk? Because he is unstoppable and smirking all the way to the bank.

I’m not critical of Kat either, hey a lot of stars have made careers out of sex appeal. Don’t confuse it with talent though. American Idol is, supposedly, a singing contest. Talent is a factor in there someplace. Taylor has more of it than Kat, even if he doesn’t pout as cute as she does.

Mcphee sounds like every other pop singer out there. Why do we need another Kelly Clarkson? I thought Mcphee’s last song was “Because of You” at first – damn near identical.

Donna Lane is my lover! Only she will not admit it. I met her in a Lesbian Leather Bar where she was impersonating Buck Owens. I think she was using the satage name of _uck Mowns. Any way she was such a hot number in her leather chaps and her Harley jacket. I knew before the night was over her boots would be kicking me. She made me her personal slave girl for over a month and kept me chained to the bed whenever she went out. She made me caller her Master Don. I was so in love with her. Then one day she threw me out for a younger girl. Now she wont even admit to our torrid affair and I am left to raise our child, Slither, all by myself. I wouldnt mind but it gets hard for me to buy all those mice to feed Slither. I think she should own up to her responsibilities and start paying support. Honestly she thinks just cuz she has hair on her chest that she can act like Archie Bunker!…Oh and she is putting on about that bit with Clay….she is one of his biggest fans…in secret of course.

Oh please! I never liked Kelly Clarkson. She was simple the lesser of two evils …so to speak. Kathrine may not win but bioth she and Taylor have more talent in one finger than Kelly Clarkson. The standards are higher now than they were then…Heck Kevin (Chicken-Little)has more talent than Justin Guarrini. And I mean that seriously. Now today Kelly Clarkson is vastly improved…but look how many years of training she has had since then also!

In the top 10, people have voted the worst singers ahead of others that can really sing. Now we are talking about Chris Dauthry so he was voted off….America you voted him off + WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL….wasn’t Bo Bice an amazing singer, wasn’t Clay an amazing singer so what is the deal with Chris. America please do not vote for beauty, When Taylor sings he sings with heart, passion, feeling…Katherine just sings the words, don’t get me wrong she has an amazing voice, but she is not an American Idol.

Last night was a good show. Both sounded good until Kat’s last song. She was all over the place at the end..yeah she looked amazong as she always does. But from day one, I have said it was going to be either Chris or Taylor. yeah he might not “look” the part, he might be a little annoying with the whole “soul patrol” gimic but the man can sing no doubt.
I feel that if Taylor dont win..then the judging is fixed…bottom line.
