American Idol Drives Fox To Ratings Win

May 31, 2006 11:15 PM by Joe Blackmon

FOX’s remarkable 2005-2006 season ended with the network scoring huge victories for the week, the May Sweep, and the 2005-2006 broadcast season.  FOX dominated the final week of the 2005-2006 broadcast season, winning six out of seven nights (for the first time ever, excluding baseball) among the key demo Adults 18-49 and out-performing its nearest competitor by 3 full ratings points for the week.  In addition, FOX ranked No. 1 for the fourteenth consecutive week among Adults 18-49, marking a new network record and the most consecutive weekly wins in season by a network in nearly a decade.

FOX’s week was fueled by strong performances from powerhouses AMERICAN IDOL, 24, HOUSE and the season premiere of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.  The final performances of Katharine and Taylor on AMERICAN IDOL delivered a 12.3/34 among Adults 18-49, setting the bar as IDOL’s highest rated final performance show ever among Adults 18-49 and Total Viewers. Tuesday night’s performance show showed solid gains versus the same performance night last year, increasing +6% among Adults 18-49, +11% among Adults 18-34, +14% among Teens and +14% in Total Viewers.

AMERICAN IDOL’s 2-hour finale on Wednesday delivered a 14.2/35 among Adults 18-49 with 36.4 Mil Total Viewers, leading FOX to its highest Total Viewers for a night EVER (any night of the week) with entertainment programming.

Wednesday night’s AMERICAN IDOL finale earned the talent show’s second highest rated finale numbers ever (behind only the Clay/Ruben finale on 5/21/03, Wed/9-10p). Wednesday’s 8-10p finale of AMERICAN IDOL outperformed the comparable Clay/Ruben Idol 8-10p finale (for the night) by +6% among Total Viewers. The second hour of last night’s finale also outdelivered the 9-10p Clay/Ruben Idol finale by +8% among Total Viewers.

FOX’s season premiere of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE did a 4.3/13 among Adults 18-49 and posted its highest ratings ever in Total Viewers, gaining +4% versus its premiere last summer.  SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE won Thursday night on a total primetime basis among all key demos and gave FOX its first summer Thursday nightly win among Adults 18-49 in nearly 14 years (since 8/27/92).  SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE is FOX’s highest rated Thursday premiere in 7 years among Adults 18-49 and Total Viewers (since World’s Wildest Police Videos on 4/2/98).

when the contestants toured graceland, did Elvis impersonaters begin before or after his death? Paula Abdul has one now! She’s Christina Milian. She was on the today show-Sat. june 3rd. I thought it was Paula on the radio when I first heard her and thought it was a bit cheesy of a song for Paula to make a comeback with.
