Or perhaps the better question is “Is the American Idol Tour cursed for American Idol first runner-ups?” Since the American Idol 5 Tour began, first runner-up Katharine McPhee has battled with bronchitis and laryngitis, delayed airplanes, and now a fractured foot. According to the New York Post, Katharine McPhee tripped backstage before an American Idol Tour stop at the Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After the accident, Katharine McPhee went on to perform, but an x-ray after the show revealed that she had fractured her foot. Even though the injury will create discomfort, the New York Post reports that Katharine will continue on and not withdraw from the tour.
Katharine McPhee is not the first second place finisher on American Idol to experience a string of bad luck with the American Idol Tour. Last year, American Idol 4 runner-up Bo Bice battled stomach problems and ironically enough a broken foot. Bo Bice broke his foot while performing on the American Idol 4 Tour in late July of 2005, but he also continued on with the tour.
However, Bo Bice did eventually have to drop out of the tour, because just about three weeks after his foot injury, Bo had a blockage in his intestines and had to undergo emergency surgery. Given all the health problems and injuries suffered by Katharine McPhee and Bo Bice on the American Idol Tour, whoever finishes second on American Idol 6 might want to make sure to take all their vitamins and invest in some sturdy steel-toed safety boots.
