Should Rock Star Eliminations Be Decided Entirely By Viewer Vote?

September 06, 2006 11:25 PM by Joe Blackmon

Jason_newsted_tearsFor the second week in a row, the Rock Star Supernova judges have made a very controversial elimination.  Last week, the judges heaped praise on Ryan Star before sending him home.  Ryan Star had been coming on strong in the competition and had even been labeled “the dark horse” by Dave Navarro, so his elimination was a shock to many fans.  The studio crowed booed Supernova’s decision, and viewers protested on the Internet.

This week, Supernova once again eliminated a singer who had been coming on strong in recent performances.  Dave Navarro had said Storm Large’s original song during the performance show was his favorite original that he’s heard on the whole show.  During Storm’s results show performance of “Wish You Were Here,” Jason Newsted was reduced to tears.  However, Jason Newsted still told Storm Large that she would be going home to sleep in her own bed.

Did the Rock Star Supernova judges make the right choice?  In their defense, they would have likely caught grief no matter who they eliminated.  If they had eliminated either Storm Large or Dilana over Ryan Star then they would have been criticized that they just didn’t want a woman leading Supernova.  If they had eliminated Lukas Rossi or Dilana over Storm Large, then they would have been criticized that they weren’t considering overall performance since the beginning of the competition.

However, the one thing that is especially disconcerting about the back to back eliminations of Ryan Star and Storm Large is that the judges appear to have gotten rid of the two best songwriters in the competition.  On Rock Star INXS, one of the things that helped win the competition for J.D. Fortune was his original song “Pretty Vegas.”  The original songs are an important part of Rock Star, and it’s a shame that the show has lost perhaps its two best songwriters.

Given the two recent controversial eliminations by the judges, should Rock Star change the rules next season so that eliminations are completely left up to the viewer vote?  There are both advantages and disadvantages to giving the judges the final say in the eliminations.  One disadvantage is that if the judges make up their minds early on in the competition, they could keep their favorite singer around for the entire competition and render the viewer vote useless.  One advantage of giving the judges the final say is that it limits the risk of a really good singer going home just because they had one off night, which has been known to happen on American Idol.  Please post your comments below on if you think Rock Star should put the eliminations solely in the hands of the viewer vote next season.

The problem with Rock Star is not a problem of who gets to make the final decision. The show’s big elephant of a flaw is that the performers who get the fewest votes get to perform the most. Ridiculous. So those who don’t fall into the bottom 3 end up singing the least songs, especially songs of their own choosing.

Bad idea. The judges (band members) are choosing the person best suited for their band. That’s what so many fans don’t understand. It’s not about who’s the most talented or the best performer (if it was, Ryan would have easily won). It’s about who fits best with Supernova (which is why it’ll be Lukas or Toby who wins).

I agree with Mike. It’s the band who is looking for a lead singer, not someone wanting to be a solo artist. If the people want to find a solo artist have some other kind of show like “idol” then you can vote for whoever you want, but again, with the Chris thing on idol, you can never to be too sure of who will win!!

Rockstar’s format is fine. The band needs to be able to pick someone they get along with.

As seen with Idol and other public voting shows, America doesn’t always pick the most talented or best performers. They fall for editing every time. I think it is time we had a show where they are looking for a complete band.

The choosing / elimination process as it stands — with the band having the ultimate decision — is the only way to go. But, the band needs to know what they want and be consistent in their selection process. Supernova has stressed the importance of songwriting ability, and yet they have sent some of the best songwriters home. They have told the rockers what they want to see and what they expect, and then they send them home even though they’ve shown in their performances exactly what Supernova asked them to do. They say one thing and do another, and they say they value the fans’ input but seem to turn their backs on the fans many times. With their indecisiveness, inconsistency and super egos, it seems like the members of Supernova should be running for the United States Congress instead of forming a band !

The biggest problem that Rockstar is facing is not how the contestants are picked to leave. It is the material they have to sing. Since when is songs like “I will survive” considered a rock song? A song like “I will survive” is better off relegated to American Idol, not on a show about Rock Songs…

No matter how much effort Storm Large put on his Tuesday performance. No, they just chose Dilana over her. Idiots!

The band should have the final opinion, but they should remember it is the fans of the show who will buy their CDs. I think they should change the voting style if there is a next season. They should let the viewers select the ones to go home until they get to the final three. Then the band could choose from them. This way most fans will get what they want and the band still has a say on who fronts their band. If it was done this way I think the outcome would be very different. Of course I think the voting is backwards on all reality shows. They should have the viewers vote on who should go home.

I actually feel that the “reality tv” format doesn’t fit well with what ROCKSTAR is trying to achieve.

In a normal ‘reality tv’ show, emotions run high, people have their likes/dislikes. At the end of the day, it’s all for ratings. With ROCKSTAR, they are looking for a fanbase – not a hit-and-run ratings-only show. It doesn’t behoove them to have ‘haters’.

Seems they are now figuring that out, as they are taking the House Band and rockers on the road with them. (Ticket sales were probably lousy)

    Regarding last night’s show;

Eliminating Storm after her best performances is just wrong. While I don’t think she was the right fit, she was always great. I think they were far too critical of her on this show, in general. (and Dilana)

Toby deserved that encore, but I can’t help but think they are throwing him a bone, so they can choose their paramour Lukas Pukas.

    Speaking of Pukas…..I have 2 issues with him last night;

    a) For his elimination round, he chose a song that landed him in the bottom 3 to begin with! How dumb is that?!

    b) It was a cheap shot to redo his original and steal Toby’s thunder.

I get the creeps when that guy smiles too…he is such a freakshow. He lacks the talent to back up the ego.

Next week we’ll see if the spoilers are true, if they pick Pukas. If so, they cut the voting just in time, so their precious doesn’t end up in the bottom again.

Storm seems like a very good person but her talent is ove-rated.I feel that Supernova does not want to appear sexsist so no matter how crappy Dilana performs, they will take her to the final 2

  11. Claudia Says:

NO WAY should the viewers choose the singer! The band has to pick someone who fits them.

If the viewers voted on who goes home (instead of who stays), would that encourage the haters? Jen is right, they need to develop a fanbase not schism their viewers.

On whether the reality TV format works for rock… hard to say. INXS has done pretty well – a comeback but not super huge. Supernova has already sold out a bunch of shows without naming a singer or putting out an album. Is that about the TV show, or about the band members’ star power? It’s certainly an interesting experiment.

Without question Storm was the best singer and maybe songwriter on the show. Throughout the competition, it is clear that the members of Supernova do not know how to judge talent. Dave navarro usually knows what he is talking about but the others are out to lunch. I think they are has beens hoping to pick some young guy who will help them bring in the groupies. Probably Toby or Lucas who do not have the talent that certainly Storm has. The band never played with Storm. It was clear they were gunning for her.

I expect the band to fizzle pretty quickly after all this is over.

If anything, this gig has too much viewer input as it is. It seems Supernova eliminates whoever has the most bottom three appearances to that point (with the odd exception of Zayra, who must have provided the band comic relief – I have no other explanation). Originally, I rooted for Dilana, until she crumbled from her self-imposed drama, which severely affected her last two performances. Dilana can’t seem to write an interesting song, either. Storm, who I didn’t like originally, kicked ass the last two shows (made me proud to be a girl). If you watch the webisodes, she’s always super professional and creative, as well as a great songwriter. She’s the only woman on the show that would have been tolerable for Supernova to tour with (no matter how tough she looks on the outside, Dilana is at heart a moody, mercurial femme). So, it’s down to the boys. I love Magni, personality wise, he’s like the male Storm, a super cool guy, but a bit of a yawn onstage. Lukas has the look and cocky attitude, but two hours of that twitchy, grumbly shtick? No thanks. It’s gotta be Toby. Lightweight, maybe, but a catchy songwriter (oh oh oh oh oh oh), a fun guy, and let’s face it, the chicks dig him.

The ultimate decision should be the band’s. Elimination is far more methodical than picking who sang the weakest that week. Preformance, attitude, image, genre preference all factor in. However it would be nice to know who got the lowest votes overall regardless.

  16. fortune4me Says:

Please, please, please, don’t put the decisions totally in the hands of the voter. That is American Idolish and so wrong for this show. Just think, people. If the voters alone determined who stayed and who went home, INXS would have been stuck with the patiently controlling Marty and I wouldn’t be planning my next adventure to concerts on the Third North American Leg of the Switched On Tour. Get a grip, people.

Wait, what was the question again?

“Should Rock Star Eliminations Be Decided Entirely By Viewer Vote?”

Oh, yes. Well, if they weren`t, where would the fun be in that? Besides, look at what fan voting has done for American Idol. We now know of lovely singers such as Clay Aiken, that big fat black guy, Taylor Hicks, Corey Clark, Fantaisia, Constantcrap, Chicken Little, Kellie Pickler and many others.

  18. Sheila Says:
    September 7th, 2006 at 8:28 pm

The problem with the viewers voting for who stays and who goes is that someone like Lukas Rossi would have been eliminated after the first show because he wears make-up and has a stripe in his hair. Face it, the public at large is not the best judge of talent and when it is something as crucial as who is going to front a band, it’s should always be the bands decision, first, last and always. It is their career. Otherwise we will end up with Britney Spears fronting Metallica.

  19. Overlooked Says:
    September 7th, 2006 at 11:22 pm

The reason why it seems the strongest solo performers are going home is because they are. The band is not interested in picking a strong solo artist, they are interested in someone that can be absorbed into the band WITHOUT upstaging it.

Based on that criteria alone, Ryan and Storm had to go.

This is just a BAD, BAD idea. No offence but you are way off base. This show is about matchmaking not who has the purest voice, or the best stage presence, or who the public falls in love with.

THE BAND needs to decide who they want to make music with otherwise they don’t really have a hope in hell of overcoming the stigma that is attached to reality tv singers.

We may love one of the singers, and hate another one but ulitimately the BAND needs to make the final decision. They just take us along for the crazy ride that is Rockstar. That’s how it is, that’s how it should be.

As a certan band sang last year ‘Don’t Change’ for me Rockstar. You’re just perfect just the way you are.

(except maybe next year.. less Nirvana?)

I love the show but i can’t stand supernova, i just don’t like their music. I think that the best thing that can happen to the contestents is that they will get as far as they can without actually getting picket to be the lead singer. This is probably the best exposure an unknown singer can get. But I like Toby or Magni. Magni is by far my favourite singer in this competition so i think he should come second, i think Dilana or Lucas should win because they are my least favourites
