CMA Awards Shocker – Carrie Underwood Wins, Faith Hill Storms Off

November 07, 2006 01:47 AM by Joe Blackmon

The biggest news coming out of the CMA Awards isn’t about who won what award.  It’s about how Faith Hill reacted when Carrie Underwood won the Female Vocalist of the Year award.  When Carrie Underwood was announced as the winner, Faith Hill threw her hands up into the air, yelled at the camera, and then stormed off.  Faith Hill’s words were not audible, but she appeared to be screaming “What!”

What exactly Faith Hill said and if she was really angry or just trying to make a joke has become a hot topic on message boards and blogs across the Internet.  Many viewers have interpreted Faith Hill’s reaction to be one of shock and outrage over a relatively new singer to the country music world getting such a prestigious award.  Other viewers have argued that Faith Hill was just pretending to be upset as a joke or that she was asking “What?” because she couldn’t hear who had won.

Whether Faith Hill was seriously upset, just making a joke, or having difficulty hearing, her reaction has created shockwaves among country music fans.  Many viewers saw Faith Hill’s reaction as being in poor taste, regardless of whether it was serious or meant as a joke.  Other fans have rushed to Faith Hill’s defense and argued that she was justified in her reaction because they feel the Female Vocalist of the Year award should go to a veteran performer.

Was Faith Hill angry, trying to make a joke, or just having trouble hearing?  Post your opinions in the comment section below.

if you ask me… she threw her hands up because she thought she had won… so when she said “WHAT” it’s because she was PISSED! it looked like she said something else after that, but I couldn’t make it out… I worked my DVR overtime trying to figure it out… but she was pissed!

I saw it and my initial response was “she’s making a joke”.
But I thought enough of it to google it and found this blog.
If it wasn’t a joke – shame on her.
But I am surely willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

This is embarrassing for Faith. If this was a joke that she was making, it backfires.

Actually If you tivo it back to where they announce the nominees right after they say the 5 ladies names they cut to all 5 and as you see faith appear on scream you can see her mouth the words “I better F**cking win”. I have watched it over and over and put it the slo mo and she really says this so that would make me believe that she isnt joking, she is actually pissed off that she didnt win. Im suprised nobody is talking about the part she mouthed before carrie was announced the winner. Regardless of what happened Im sure she is going to say it was just a joke.

Faith Hill was VERY pissed and it was very apparent to those who saw the moment on television. It was not a joking thing, she was visibly angered when she heard Carrie Underwood’s name being called.

Maybe it’s time for Faith Hill to take a breather and realize she’s not the only good country music singer on the planet.

Way to go Carrie, us underdogs are sticking up for you!

    Faith, shame on you!

i dont think it was joke. i’m a big faith hill fan and i really admire her. i thought she would win too — but carrie underwood is also deserving of the award. she (carrie) has done more than enough since last year to win the award. i dont think the award is for who is in the business longer.. i’m really quite disappointed with faith hill. i guess most of her fans are too.

Is this the most exciting moment in CMA history. I mean how could Faith not know she was on camera! She was acting all coy and between her supposed shy smiles she does seem to utter something about “…better… win”, before they announce the winner. Then she is extremely upset when Carrie Underwood is announced. And it is obvious that she did shout at the camera “WHAT?!!!”. All the other artists graciously applaud Carrie but Faith Hill storms off camera. Wow. I bet Tim was stroking her ego tonight to help her calm down. Oh Faith. Take a good look at a shining example of a woman and country artist Martina McBride. She is humble and performs like a choir of angels. She doen’t put her country persona, her fame, or much else above the pure fact that she has a God given talent to share great words of wisdom with the world. Not just her pretty face and a dotting husband. Sorry Faith but ouch, that hurt us all.

Any trying to defend Faith is fighting a losing battle … and is naive to boot. Wow is all I can say. DVR is the only way to go. “If I don’t win I won’t believe it. WHAT!!!” Lost a lot of respect for her tonight. You can park the talk about a “joke”. That was no joke.

Since I am sick and tired of the overrated Carrie Underwood winning everything with one record released,i’m thrilled that someone has actually had guts enough to pull off the reaction that Faith did. One album, and she’s been an opening act and maybe an occasional “head liner” at a county fair. Her fans go out and buy 10 copies of her Cd so they can hike up her sales. Lord only know’s that I’ve heard enough of “jesus take the wheel.”

  12. Darrell Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 5:15 am

I personally couldnt believe what I saw Faith do but…I did and the fleeting moment I saw that I knew. Very childish. After her song about her being a Mississippi girl and not letting a little fame go to her head I don’t know how she will live this one down. Check the tabloids at the checkout stand. I know I will.

  13. Rick Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 5:49 am

Whether is was a joke or a real reaction Faith Hill’s reaction was in poor taste. There is such a thing as being a gracious loser. And for all of those die-hard country fans who think the Female Vocalist of the Year should go to a veteran …. the award should go to the best Female Vocalist of the Year … PERIOD! And it did. Give Ms. Underwood a break. Allow the girl to enjoy the award and everyone just move on.

Shame on you Faith! You acted very unprofessional and like a spoiled brat! Carrie Underwood has worked very hard and progressed very far this year. You are not the only person on the planet nor talent in the Country Music industry. Share the wealth and learn how to recognize another person’s achievements!

I wonder if anyone would have thought anything of Faith’s reaction had she not been a star? We’ve all done it somtime or another in our lives so why don’t we just move on to things that are really important. I really don’t think Carrie should have won but she did so let’s all take a deep breath and relax.

  20. Bob Says:

Regardless of the seriousness behind Faith Hill’s action, the award honestly shouldn’t have gone to Carrie. I’m not saying Carrie isn’t a good vocalist, but I am saying that Sara Evans, Martina McBride, and Faith Hill are all better, and in my opinion, had better success this year. Whether Hill’s actions were serious or not is no case, the case is that her actions empowered what many country veterans are thinking, that the CMAs have changed drastically over the years, and for the worst.

As for the clips, watch Sara and Faith. They appear to be standing next to each other, talking. Then when they announce the winner, Faith screams “what”, but look what Sara does. If anyone storms off, it’s Sara. They obviously were discussing it backstage. Give her a break and get on with your lives.

Well, after sleeping on it and reading the comments this morning, along with posted blogs throughout cyber space, I know without a doubt that we all witnessed a side of Faith Hill that was not pretty nor ever intended to be seen by the public. She screwed up, as all humans do, but it was most definately in poor taste to say the least. It was not a joke nor can be argued as one. She poses in the beginning as if she knows without a doubt that she will be receiving the award, hands down. The competition was tough, and every woman up for the award was well deserving, including our newest star, Carrie Underwood. So CONGRATS, Carrie, and grow up, Faith. You still have fans watching you~

  23. Natalie Says:

Why is everybody whining about someone expressing their true feelings? If Faith Hill was upset, I guess she was supposed to plaster a fake smile on her face and pretend she didn’t want to win. I applaud her ability to really express what she was feeling, even if she was being a bit of a sore loser.

  24. Terry Glen Miller Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 7:59 am

    WOW… wow wow….

It is 8:00 in the morning and I should be in class right now… but, I have a minor setback. I’m dissapointed in Faith. I have always looked up to her as a performer, and judging by reading this comment… we all caught a glimpse of what fame can do to you. I’m a music industry major in college and my professor always tells me that “ignorance can ruin your career faster than talent can grow it”. I have a feeling this will be talked about for awhile…and will stay engraved on Faiths record- haunting her. Like someone said up above.. every woman was well deserving of this award…where is the sportsmanship, and what has fame truly done to these beautiful women? :(

    Faith you’ve truly disapointed a loyal/devoted fan.

The name of the event is “40th ANNUAL CMA Awards” Annual means yearly. I don’t recall Faith having that great of a year. when i do think about the past year, the name Carrie Underwood comes to mind. I’m not a huge Carrie fan, I WAS a Faith fan, but her poor judgement and her inability to be happy for others makes me sick. She has EVERYTHING…the perfect marriage, beautiful children, a very successful career, beauty, and talent! and she can’t be happy for someone else. what a self centered witch!

I reacted the exact same way as Faith. Carrie Underwood isn’t in thte same class as the other ladies up for the award. I thought it was great that she won the horizon award. It’s just not right or fair that she won this!

  31. Teresa Says:

  32. Xeno Says:

At my job, the radio is on all day. It plays country, exclusively.

All year, I’ve been listening to the top 40, and the things the listeners request.

Carrie Underwood has gotten more airtime this year than Faith Hill, Martina McBride, or Sara Evans.

This is because she’s sold an enormous number of albums, and people call the radio stations to request her songs pretty much constantly.

All of the other 3 are good artists. But this year, BASED ON THE STRENGTH OF A SINGLE ALBUM, Carrie Underwood has had a better year than any of them; therefore she wins the award. That’s not complicated.

What is complicated to me is why anyone would believe that being a good singer means you don’t have to have any courtesy or grace.

Go watch any other awards show, ever. You will see people who REALLY OUGHT TO have won an award get passed up in favor of people who didn’t deserve them – and they stand, smile, and applaud.

Faith Hill – and Sara Evans, as well – behaved in a manner that’s about as sour grapes as a person can get. That’s precisely what you’re NOT supposed to do at an awards show. You ARE, as an earlier poster asked, supposed to plaster a grin on your face, and pretend you’re happy they won. Even if you’re not.

No-one cares how much you swear in your car later.

She was pissed, I don’t about her singing but she is without a doubt THE hottest chick up there. On the other hand Gretchen Wilson has that half empty beer bottle, cigarette smoke smelling, football watching sexy thing goin on, she’d be way better in bed.

  37. Chance Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 8:45 am

Hands down, Carrie had a better year than the others. I love Martina, but has anyone really listened to her new CD? It’s not even close to Carrie’s and not one of Martina’s best and the others just did not have the YEAR, yes, people, the year, that Carrie had. We are not talking track records, we are talking about the best singer THIS YEAR. Faith should have showed more class. I’ve always liked her, but are we seeing the true Faith?? I think it really bothered her that a singer from American Idol beat her!

  38. Linda Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 8:47 am

Let’s get real. Faith reacted in frustration (if that was her reaction). Carrie is very deserving of her rising star abilities, but let’s be honest……….Carrie doesn’t write any of her own music……Faith does. Carrie is a great singer and very deserving, but I truly believe Faith did not over react, she was just as deserving.

  39. Peggy Says:

I saw the show and was shocked to see Faith Hill act the way she did. At first I thought I was seeing and hearing things, but I do remember her saying something about What and then two years. She is a beautiful woman and she should be happy for others. She has had her glory, and will probably have it again, but last night was Carrie Underwoods night. Wasn’s Faith Hill a newbie at one time and did she not get her first award over others that have been in the industry longer. Grow up Faith!

  40. Anonymous Says:

I always thought that Tim had the big ego in their relationship, maybe I was wrong. Maybe Faith forgot about that whole Mississippi Girl joke of a song she recorded a while back. Faith is a joke, and anyone who defends her reaction should head down to the local gas station and buy a clue. If there are any of you idiots reading this that thought she wasn’t pissed off, I’ve got some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.

  41. Suzan Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 8:51 am

I was shocked when I saw how Faith Hill reacted to Carrie Underwood’s win! She looked like she thought they had called her name at first, then WHAM! She was soooo ticked off and showed very poor sportsmanship.
The other nominees all were very gracious in applauding a well deserved winner.
Did Faith think because she had a very successful tour this past year and made a lot of money she was that good?? I think most of the fans who went to that concert only tolerated her to get to see her husband, Tim McGraw! Let’s face it, most of the songs she has had out in the past two or three years have sucked! She hasn’t had a BIG hit since Breathe!
Faith, you need to go back home to Mississippi and learn where your roots are and maybe take some lessons in good manners.

  48. Catie Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 9:00 am

Having been in the music business myself for a time, I can say to all of you wondering about Faith’s reaction that it is not that shocking. In order to make it in the business, you really have to have a “prima donna” attitude. Few people, other than those of us who have tried to make it in the biz, understand how difficult it is to get up in front of people and show your true talent….to be able to do it as well in front of millions as you do in your shower REQUIRES a big ego. The trick to selling albums and being loved by your fans is selling an “image” that you do not have an ego, that you are just like everyone else. What happened with Faith is she accidentally let her “camera face” disappear and her true self out. This is not to excuse her reaction, which was not classy….but it is probably more typical of those in her career than most fans would believe or want to know.

  49. Ron Says:

  50. politico Says:

It’s Election Day, so let me put this into political terms: there are now two notable flops in the last 10 days in making public jokes, if the joke-tellers are to be believed as to their intent: John Kerry and Faith Hill. At least Kerry WAS trying to make a joke, however dumb and poorly told. Faith’s p.r. spin machine is trying to get across a lie – she WASN’T joking. That was a very real reaction from a person with an exaggerated sense of entitlement and a questionable level of class. It will stick on her permanent record just as John Kerry’s inability to tell a joke will stick to his – like Velcro. I feel sorry for Kerry. I feel disdain for Faith Hill.

This kind of thing is typical of Country ‘n Western fans!! Sport sports gallops in ‘em!!! It doesnt surprise me on Faith Hill-she had better keep “Cryin” and “Breathin”, she through winning awards.
Carrie Underwood deserved to win-she’s new, fresh, and un-corrupted by Tim McGraw and the ledgions of simple country folk who elevate these born losers to Star Status.
Faith, ya have lost the Faith of the Country Kings and Queens!!
    A loud Boo to her!!!

Faith Hill is just jealous, and as for veteran singers winning this award, thats BS. The award goes to the BEST female vocalist, not the best veteran vocalist. If she wants an award for being a great singer and being old, just retire and shoot for the lifetime acheivement award or something like that.

  54. Phreddy Mercury Says:

I totally think Carrie Underwood deserved that award, she is awesome. Unfortunatley she won’t even be able to enjoy one of her happiest moments since Faith has caused all of this. Carrie was so gracious and humble about recieving the award, Faith already expected to win.

I watched the cma awards but I didn’t see what you’ll are talking about. I must have gone to my kitchen. But I’m surprised in her reaction, Faith’s that is. I was very glad that Carrie Underwood won a couple of awards. Faith wanted the award very much so. But not that she is not deserving of it. But Carrie is younger, great singer, and man did she look hot in that nice mini-skirt that she had on. Faith also looked great but she is a little older than Carrie. I’m surprised at her reaction, but it probably would of been best if she didn’t show that much emotion like that on TV. You win some you lose. Actually, both are winners Carrie & Faith it’s just one of them received the award!! What can you do!!! I hope that Faith is happy for Carrie and not jealous!! But I guess you will really never know the real truth from Faith! Only she know!

I live where Tim is from and I bet that down home boy is pissed at her actions! She was very unprofessional. She probably thought that just because she sang before the award she would get it like all the others had. That is why she was so ancy. To bad so sad Faith…suck it up!

…confused as to why someone with a *life* is reading and responding to a reality tv site…???

As for Faith, I am disappointed. I realize people have these feelings inside, you have to have a big ego to make it, but to show this to others is being a poor sport. You have to be gracious in defeat, whether you agree with the outcome or not.

  74. Melanie Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:06 am

It was in poor taste. I’ve never understood why everyone makes such a big deal about Faith anyway. She’s not that great of a singer. As for “it should go to a veteran”, the award is not for best veteran country singer..just because you are a veteran at country music doesn’t mean you are good at it.

  75. Melissa Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:07 am

This is not the first time Faith Hill has shown her true colors. I saw her at a small venue about 7 years ago and she brought her hubby Tim out onstage and everyone went nuts! She threw a hissy and said “did y’all come here to see me, or did you come here to see my husband?” She was pissed and didn’t talk to the audience at all for the rest of the show. She didn’t even do an encore. I like her but she’s definately a diva. That’s too bad that she’s overshadowing Carrie Underwood’s big moment with a temper tantrum. Shame on you, Faith. Everyone is watching.

  76. jc Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:09 am

Sad to say, I missed this “tantrum” but not surprised. I, for one, am glad to see the awards shows coming around and giving the awards to the ones who DESERVE them, not because of who they are or if they’re a veteran performer. I am a huge Martina fan but it definitely was Carrie’s year and she deserved it. It will be interesting to see if Faith ever recovers from this ordeal. Look what happened to the Dixie Chicks….what a shame and a waste of great talent.

  78. Tiffany Young Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:16 am

I think Faith acted out in frustration. And rightfully so. American Idol winners don’t deserve big awards. They don’t write thier own music. I feel only the ones who do the work themselves deserve the award. I feel that Carrie does not belong with that group of talented ladies. I think American Idol sucks and so does anyone who wins the show. Reality TV is changing the world, and for the negative. It changes Music Award Shows what is next…The Oscars? OR Real Life? It goes to show you that awards shows are scripted-AKA FIXED. FAITH earned it give it to her.

  79. ABC cause this? Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:18 am

I think this was arranged to happen by ABC.

    1. The way Faith reacted, she didn’t expect to win, she KNEW she was going to win.

    2. This is the first time ABC had the CMA that if memory serves correct where on CBS for many years (may have been on CMT too).

Thus, I think someone (maybe someone with ABC) told her she’d win and made sure they got the moment that will long be remembered.

The result, everyone is talking about this this morning and ABC has to be loving it.

    Reality?? Not in my opinion.

  80. K Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:18 am

Hopefully Faith doesn’t speak for all Mississippi girls with her ego and self centeredness. Just because you didn’t win ONE award doesn’t mean you can act like an idiot. Time to learn those southern manners again.

  81. Sharlene Jeffrey Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:19 am

I also feel that the award should go to a veteran of country music. But Faith Hill should of shown some class in the matter and should not made a scene like see did. I and I’m sure many others are very upset over her reaction. Underwood may not be a veteran of country music but she works hard and well deserves the award as much as the rest. Good for you Carrie, as for Faith get a grip there will be other awards. In the music business your one big family, so when somebody wins an award you should just be as happy for them as if it was for yourself. Faith good luck serviving thisone!

Why would anyone make a joke like this, knowing how it could be misconstrued in such a negative way?? This was no joke. The question is whether she was upset because she DIDN’T win, or because Carrie Underwood DID win. The other contenders were poised and anxious while waiting for the winner to be announced, but Faith was animated and acting like she had it in the bag the whole time. I guess she really isn’t the sweet little Mississippi Girl like in her song — who “Just ’cause everybody knows her name, Ain’t big headed from a little bit of fame.” Shame on you, Faith.

I think Carrie Underwood deserves that award more than any of the other nominees. She has worked hard for that award regardless of her age and time spent in the country music industry. All of the nominees are great singers but didn’t deserve the award as Carrie Underwood did. As for Faith Hill, the reputation so many had of her as a great woman, mother, christian, and friend has gone away. It was an extreme disappointment and I will never support her again. Joking or not she shouldnt have reacted that way in that situation.

  89. Wendy Says:

Where have the CMA’s gone??? What ever happened to loyalty to the good old singers (from the last five years and beyond! :) Carrie Underwood has many years to prove her longevity. She CLEARLY DESERVED the Horizon award, but that’s it!!! I agree with Faith!!!

  90. alexandra salazar Says:

I think this is hilarious. Something makes me think that Faith was told that she had won beforehand, so when she heard it was Carrie she was truly shocked. This doesn’t change my opinion of her. She’s just a human like the rest of us, and she goofed. Big deal.

  91. Danny Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:55 am

OK people calm down…this was meant as a joke, and it has nothing to do with Carrie Underwood. Faith was not expecting to win because she knows that the CMA’s hate her…don’t you remember how shocked she was when she did win a few years back. She was acting like she really wanted it, when she knew she wasn’t gonna get it, i can’t believe some people are so uptight that they can’t even take a joke.

  92. Skoalman Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 10:59 am

Since the awards reflect the past years achievements, I think that Carrie has been a well deserving winner of the award, she came up to the big leagues and busted butt and now she gets the credit that she worked for. And really who pitched a fit when Faith got all the attention when she was coming to her fame, And if people really do still like her, she’ll keep around, like Straight, Alan Jackson, Chesney, Brooks and Dunn, Reba and even her husband Tim. bottom line, you can’t win everytime, time to get used to being in a group of people that can beat you.

  93. Scott Says:

Sara Evans fans please turn your caps lock off on your keyboard. There is no need for that.

Regarding Faith Hill, she is just showing a little emotion and we’re all entitled to a little of that every now and then, otherwise we’d all be hypocrits. Nothing wrong with a little jealousy in the entertainment industry, because that is what it is… entertainment. Nothing else. No life changing prophecy.

And by the way, the second word Faith said was “Oh.” Probably a post reaction after she realized she was still on camera. Perhaps the camera person said…. “We’re LIVE Faith.” “Oh” she says. I think the next word out of her mouth was most likely “Sh*t,” but thankfully the show’s director took the crowd wide shot instead. ha ha.

  94. Dawn Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 11:19 am

This wasn’t a joke on Faith’s behalf. However, has disappointed hundreds of fans. She acted like a self centered …..from the time her name was called out as a nominee. I played back the DVR several times (“WHAT??”)and saw just what it was…. a very upset, self centered beautiful loser. Yes, beautiful, however after those true colors have appeared, she has no inside beauty, which now makes the outward beauty -UGLY!!!!!!!

  95. FutureCountryStar Says:
    November 7th, 2006 at 11:24 am

My guess on why Faith is upset 9if she really is) – Carrie is a Manufactured Artist. She didn’t have to pull herself up to where she is today, she went on a T.V show and was popular. She didn’t have to spend her own money on Demo Discs, and trips to Nashville. She isn’t deserving of the award. Not saying Faith is, but it should have gone to a true country singer, and not some Barbie-Doll assembled wannabe who went on a POP singing show and switched to Country.

Please people….remember “Best” in this case equates to most albums sold not the best talent! If that were the case Martina McBride would win hands down! She’s could wipe up the floor with any other female on that stage including pretty little pissy Faith Hill. Whats more upsetting to me is Brooks & Dunn winning 4 awards for that piece of crap tune “Believe”!!! The only thing they didn’t win an award for was winning the most awards! The only 2 performances worth a damn last night were by Martina McBride and Alan Jackson, all the rest were just “formula” bullshit country tunes.

Congrats to Carrie and to her success this year. Faith I will always be a fan of yours. Thanks for showing a side to us that we have never seen before. I saw Tim and Faith in concert last September and thought she appeared tired. Her vocals lacked punch at times. Maybe she’s worn out from the grind of being a performer and mother to her children. After all, she’s only human. Take a year off, Faith.

Then she looks around avoiding the camera. When Carrie Underwood is announced as winner, Faith Hill puts her hands up and is still smiling then she screams, “WHAT!?!?!” We even heard her screaming it over the music that was playing. I for one did not get to witness Faith Hill’s reaction because I was so ecstatic that Carrie won and had tears in my eyes. I picked Carrie out from her audition on American Idol to win and continue winning from there. She has done just that. I was first in line to buy Carrie’s cd when it came out and play it whenever I get a chance. I recently went to her concert with Brad Paisley and what a great show it was. I haven’t bought nor have I even thought about buying any album/cd by Faith Hill since she made her presence in the industry known. Not that I don’t think she is without talent but in just watching her over the last several years you can see the ego change in her. How pretencious can one person be?! Kudos to Carrie for coming out strong and by fans graces I hope she keeps on going.

I think Faith looked straight into the camera and said “What” – this was no mistake, she wanted her reaction known. Carrie is a great singer and had a great year but this award is usually given to someone who has had a few good years building up to the award. I think it should have went to Gretchen Wilson this year. Does anyone remember about 25 years ago John Denver was considered a country music wannabe and the Nashville established singers resented his success on the country charts because they really didn’t see him as a country singer – he was more from the folk music/pop scene. When he won Entertainer of the Year the presenter Charlie Rich BURNED THE ENVELOPE right there on the stage. Talk about disrespect! I think Faith was pulling her own Charlie Rich statement.

All I can say is OF COURSE she would say it is a joke. It is similar to questioning an unfaithful partner or anyone for that matter who is lying to you, do you expect them to say “Oh yes, I’ve been deceitful the whole time.” Individuals, very rarely, admit to such things when confronted. It usually takes time. Some go to their grave with the secret. A lie is a lie, regardless of how big it is. She made a mistake and hopefully admits to it at some point; although I doubt she will.

I have never been all that impressed with Faith Hill OR Carrie Underwood. I do think however that if a person is voted as the new horizon star, then the vocalist of the year award should go to someone else. As far as the rest of the show went, I think it should have been named the Acadamy of Crappy Music Awards (ACMA). If anyone actually thinks that is country music, then I feel sorry for them. Oh…and maybe Faith was actually rooting for Sarah to win the award…ya think?

My thoughts on watching Faith Hill’s reaction were exactly the same as when Kanye West threw a fit when somebody else won at the MTV awards. The only difference is that Faith didn’t want anybody to see her reaction (thus using the “it was a joke” excuse) and Kanye didn’t care who saw his reaction when he went onstage and threw a little hissy fit when he didn’t win.

Either way, both demonstrated poor sportsmanship. Being a sore loser and showing no class is definately NOT attractive. You can be a fantastic, talented artist and still act like an immateure child….definately lost all my respect.

She already had her hands up in the air in celebration until what she heard (Carrie Underwood’s name) actually registered in her brain. Then the ugly side came out. The look on her face was not one of a joking manner, nor was the “What?!!” and then her storming off. She thrives on the limelight and awards and doesn’t know how to take defeat gracefully. WOW Have we all forgotten Carrie this is her time and all of this must be putting a cloud over it.I’m sure the first time Faith won people thought the same thing but there is no rule that says you have to be there for years to win.Come on Carrie is good and she should win.I remeber win George Jones was winning so that should tell you I’m not young. But she won she’s good and she has the right to enjoy it.Let it go Faith was a poor sport and now its over. Way to go Carrie.Enjoy this its your time now.

I’m a big country fan. And this is Carrie’s time why put a black cloud over it have we forgotten she won 6,000 people voted and they thought she was good enough to win. What Faith did was just bad sportsman ship and she should know better.Wonder how Reba and the other felt when Faith first won. They did not act like her.I remeber when George Jones was winning so that should tell you my age and I think Carrie is good and should win this is not if you’ve been in the business for years you can have the award,if it was they just call it here’s you award come get it you been here along time. It’s call country music awards that means if you are in the business you can win and Carrie is and did.Now LET HER ENJOY IT THIS WILL BE THE ONLY FIRST TIME FOR HER TO WIN.The next time will be the second.Maybe next time Faith will not be there so she will not have to act up.

Carrie Underwood has one of the best voices in any genre. She ranks right up there with Leanne Rimes and Martina McBride. She has the potential to be around a long time. Faith’s voice doesn’t compare, and she is certainly never looked as “hot” as Carrie did last night. So what if this is Carrie’s first year, and she rose out of American Idol?? Luck has a lot to do with it. She was in the right place at the right time. That song Faith sang last night was HORRIBLE and BORING!! She’s not a country singer any more. Carrie always has been – she’s from Oklahoma!

Not surprising for someone who slept her way into the country music business. Faith Hill is a disgrace to country music fans everywhere. What has she done lately? Carrie has crossed over to the pop charts and has a much bigger fan base that Faith. My eight year old daughter doesn’t even know who Faith is, but she can tell you about the night that Jesus took the wheel. It was so refreshing to see such innocence on her face as she accepted the award. Carrie is the future of Country music. Faith wouldn’t be anything at all if not for Tim McGraw at the beginning of her career and even now.

Faith should get a role model. I recommend Martina McBride. She is still the bestin the business. When Faith can hit that note and hold it like Martina does I will respect her again…not going to happen.

“A Mississippi Girl Get Pissed Off” That might be her next song.

YES THE CMA’S HAVE CHANGED. BREAKING GUITARS AND STOMPING ISN’T WHAT REAL COUNTRY IS ABOUT. I THINK IT WAS A VERY BIG SHOCK THAT CARRIE UNDERWOOD WON — SHOULD NOT EVEN BE ALLOWED TO BE NOMINATED THAT SOON — ESPECIALLY IF NOMINATED FOR THE HORIZON AWARD — TOO SOON FOR FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR. I THINK FAITH WAS SHOCKED AND WHEN SHE REALIZED SHE WAS ON CAMERA, A LITTLE EMBARRASED AND WALKED AWAY FROM THE CAMERA.

If Faith says her behavior was nothing but a “playful” joke, it certainly wasn’t funny and gave a strong impression that she is a poor sport and a diva. She should take a clue from Bo Bice, who was very gracious when Carrie beat him on American Idol. To the people who claim that Faith is “hot,” I only say that Carrie is hotter. She was absolutely sizzling when she performed at the CMA’s.

Faith Hill your reaction to Carrie Underwood was truly unsportsmanship. All the other nominees took it gracefully. I have never really thought you had the greatest voice, but I’ve still supported and bought your work. If you wanted to compare talent and voice, Martina McBride wins heads on . I too, hope your career does’nt suffer like the Dixie Chicks has. AS far as what I’ve heard played on the radio and CMT videos at number 1 is Carrie Underwood.I just hope that your remark doesn’t effect carrie enjoying her moment. No longer a Faith fan.

Carrie had a helping hand writing some of the songs on Some Hearts. Give her a break, she’s new! She has said many, many times she would love to write more songs but time doesn’t allow it right now because her schedule is tight.
Faith Hill doesn’t write her own music AT ALL. Her songs come from the likes of John Rich of Big & Rich; he co-writes her songs and another lovely lady, Lori McKenna, who wrote 3 songs on Fireflies. Faith says on her website, “I asked to hear all of her songs because I felt if I could write, I would want to write just like this woman.” Faith co-produces her music.
Carrie has 3 #1 hits from Some Hearts. She is DESERVING of the award she won.

I do not agree with the comment that American idol winners should not win these awards. Carrie is very, very, talented and was discovered because of American Idol. Look at Kelly Clarkson, how far she has come and she was an idol winner. The industry, media, and radio should not disregard good talent just because they were on American Idol. American idol gives talented people that otherwise probably would not have had the connections to be discovered and chance to let their talent shine. Good for you Carrie, Kelly, Taylor and all other talented Idols. It is about time there is a show that helps talented people without connections get discovered. As far as writing her own songs, the award was not for the best song writer it was for the best female vocalist.

It’s just another response to the usual hatred of any winner of American Idol. AI winners and competitors have less legitimacy over those artists that never had that kind of show to launch their careers virtually overnight. Hey, I would be pissed too if some nobody bitch won an award like that. Anyone of those other women aside from Faith Hill were far more deserving than Carrie Underwood. She needed a little more time to pay her dues. 1 year in the industry is just not enough and a couple of months of being berrated by that prick Simon Cowel isn’t jack compared the years other artists take to claw their way to the top and I even kinda like watching American Idol. I just don’t consider most of them being all that legitimate unless they can have staying power longer a couple of years and write their own music.

She really needs to grow up. Faith really needs to take a long look at herself and say ” I’m sorry for being so selfish” especially after everything God has given her. Everyone including Carrie should be able to enjoy their time in the Light and have joy for their God Given talents. Besides, If Faith keeps singing songs like the one she did last night…..she’d better get a better songwriter or call it quits. Maybe Hollywood has gone to Faith’s head. Grow Up Faith. I guess Faith is taking the Rev Haggard approach by denying she acted inappropriately and saying it was all a joke. Her body language clearly shows she was mad as heck and for Tim McGraw to conclude that people are dense because they believed she was being serious is ridiculous. She should come clean and apologize for her ugly moment and people can move on…but because she denied it and Tim defends this awful behavior, Country fans will remember her bad behavior.

For all of you talking about Faith “writing her music” and Carrie not… remember this…

The award is for female VOCALIST of the year. Not female SONGWRITER or SINGER/SONGWRITER. The performers are judged on their vocal delivery… and to be honest… although I liked Faith quite a bit back when she had the “FAITH” cd out… before Breathe, etc… Carrie had a better vocal performance overall this year.

Her songs were just better done… especially over Faith’s Mississippi girl.

We are all human and make mistakes, but to see Faith Hill do this in front of millions of people was really a lot of fun. Sorry, but it’s the truth. No matter *WHO* won this award, it is tacky, tacky, TACKY behavior for ANY NOMINEE to show their “hinney” this way – either as joke or honest reaction. Award show nominees should know their reactions will be be scrutinized. Ladies, wear your game faces when the cameras are fixed, because tacky behvavior is low class no matter how rich or successful you are, no matter how much people think you are sweet or graceful, and no matter who was rightfully deserving! Gracefully win or gracefully lose, but suck it up.

Besides, running it back several times on my DVR, I noticed that Faith had her hands up in the air even BEFORE the winner’s name was announced. It seemed to me that Faith was anticipating. Did some insider mislead Faith into thinking her name was going to be called? Go back and look again! Her arms were up *before* the winner was announced.

Carrie broke the record, 13 weeks @ #1 with Jesus Take The Wheel. Did anyone feel Gretchen was undeserving then. Carrie has had a great year, better than the other nominees. Whether they won AI or got discovered some other way, it should be based on their talent. Faith is a very talented singer, but as history dictates, the older singers are replaced by the new. For anyone to show disrepect for anyone, the price will be paid.(Dixie Chicks) Everyone is entitled to their opinions, feelings, and emotions. But the ramifications can be great. Keep up the great work Carrie and I hope to see Kellie Pickler have as good a year in 2007.

All of them were “discovered”…usually in a bar. How is that better than a reality show? The stipulations on the award doesn’t cover how they were discovered.

If the award was meant for veterans, which it isn’t, Martina McBride would’ve had it handsdown. She is THE BEST female country singer ever, IMO. That isn’t what the award is for though…Carrie Underwood had a much more productive, successful year than any of the other singers, including McBride.(Her new song, “Anyway”, is so amazing)

Faith Hill needs to stick with pushing her democratic political views and those retarded parenting messages she puts on the radio. The song she sang last night was terrible and she is nothing like she was when she started. I’m afraid this will hurt her career and there isn’t enough PR damage control in the world to fix this.

Sure..she will always have her diehard fans that will overlook anything she does because she is Faith and she has a hot husband. I don’t believe that is the majority of her fans though.

Be proud that someone like Carrie might’ve looked up to you, although I’m not sure about your role model qualities. Do you teach your daughters that they are better than everyone too.Be glad you have a healthy family, talen, and a hot husband to boot. Way to go Carrie. First, she disses Shania Twain for dressing sexy, but that faith hill lady herself gets sexier in every new video she released. And then this Carrie jealousy thing. Whoever believes that this is a joke, is dumb and indenial. Faith Hill man, i don’t see what Tim sees in you, he can do soo much better. You are sad, sad, and sad. But why do I still have absolute no pity for you?

Oh I forgot one thing. Shania is gorgeous, cute, pretty, talented, elegant, and she would NEVER bad mouth other people. YOU, Faith Hill, is NOTHING compared to Shania. Not even 0.0000001%

I have been a fan of Faith’s for a long time, and never even liked Carrie Underwood before this. Now Carrie has my full support and Faith has lost it. Whether Carrie got into the business by winning on American Idol or not doesn’t take away from the fact that she has a good voice and is making Nashville sit up and take notice. Good for her.
Faith ought to remember how it was for her when she was starting out, and remember that the country music world doesn’t revolve around her and Tim. Congrats, Carrie…and don’t let Faith and her camera-hogging joke, piss-poor attitude, or whatever it was get you down!

This is still very upsetting to a die hard Carrie Underwood fan b/c it is clearly affecting her now. I’ve been reading up on this on the internet and a top exectuvie said that Carrie has been seen crying over this. Why? What for? If it is going this route where a young artist has to be afraid to step into the limelight then maybe the industry needs to clean up. Maybe some few artists who think they are better and more deserving than others need to be shunned for awhile. I mean Carrie has done more than enough to prove why she is America’s Idol. We, the fans put her there because we adore her and for Faith to react in such a way only insults me b/c that means she is questining my opinion and why I spent my money on Carrie’s cd and magazines. It’s very irritating and infuriating to see someone in Faith’s position do such a harsh and selfish thing to a young woman who is simnply trying to follow her dreams and her heart. Shame on Faith, you do not deserve anympre celebrity and you CERTAINLY DO NOT deserve to be getting it on Carrie’s account. How dare you try and take the attention away from a better person. Go back to Mississippi and hang out with the residents there. Maybe they can bring your ego back down to Carrie’s level.

Good grief! Carrie Underwood is just another girl that knows how to scream to a tune, and just got lucky on a reality tv show. She’s not a true idol by any means. She doesn’t deserve both the rising star award AND the best female artist award. It amazes me how people can be so overwhelmed by someone that is famous. Do you think she or any of those other so called stars, actually give a hoot about you? All of them are out to make money and become famous. In my opinion, there shouldn’t even be an awards ceremony for any of them. It’s just another way for the music companies to make more money off of the public!

Body language there clearly indicated she was anxiously waiting and expecting something. Something which didn’t happen…and I am so glad! I always loved Faith’s voice, but let’s face it…this wasn’t her prime year! How LONG someone’s been in the biz isn’t part of the award, it’s the YEAR’s best. Carrie WAS the year’s best. I’m disappointed in Faith, not because SHE was disapppointed, but because her reaction stole the full moment from Carrie. Hope Carrie wins the next 5 years!

I thought she might have made a mistake releasing an album of covers but was I wrong! Timeless went number one faster than any of her other CDs! She also sold out Radio City Musica Hall AND Madison Square Garden! Impressive considering that there isn’t a country music station in NYC!
If the award for Female Vocalist of The Year is strictly on talent and ability, then Martina should have won! Maybe Faith Hill can take singing lessons from Martina as well as conducting herself in public! Martina has more class and talent in her little pinky than Faith does in her entire body!

Some of the persons commenting on this tantrum of Faith Hill’s are acting as though they think the recipient of the award was determined by “paper, rock, scissors”.

I am 43 years old and I was shocked to see how Faith Hill reacted on the CMA awards, I think more than shocked I was disappointed in her. Whether or not it was done jokingly or being mad it was still very distasteful of her to do in her realm of professionalism. You just don’t do that. It is tabu, kind of like the Dixie Chicks, they thought it would be great to speak up and it bit them in the arse and they lost a lot of revenue I am sure. I still like Faith Hill’s singing and her songs but still very disappointed in the way she acted on public TV. I never thought I would see the day she would act like that. But live and learn. It doesn’t affect her voice or her songs but it may affect the sales of her CD’s. In regards to Faith’s CMA awards on camera outburst…. Faith’s debut album was released in late 1993. She won the CMA’s Female Voalist of the Year in 1996, only 2 years after her debut album was released, when she was just a budding star herself. Too bad she’s forgotten this, and does not appear to have the empathy, compassion nor the encouragement for other budding stars who are following in her foot-steps. Not a very good role model for other rising stars. And, the outburst was not modeling good behavior for her own 3 daughters who look to her for how to behave appropriately. “I was just kidding” is no excuse if you’re the only one laughing.

I would like to say,After all that Faith Hill has put in to Country Music,She does deserve to win,Carrie Underwood is a newbie and although I am not a fan of Miss Underwood,I clearly do not agree with the award going to someone who’s feet has barely gotten wet in the industry.Faith Works hard to bring to her fans not just one genre of music but crossover as well.To her is the same way that I feel,I feel as if The Awards Association ignored her efforts and accomplishments only to give the award to a newbie to keep the younger audience in touch with Country music,Her reaction to me shows someone who ritefully so is angered and dissapointed in judgement,Should she have kept her reaction to herself,I would argue to say ,No I feel that she was justified.Noone in this life can say that they have made proper desisions and for those of you who haven’t swept off your own doorstep need to keep your feet off hers. How dare you judge when you The Lord says that only he has the right to judge.Shame on all of you if you cannot or will not listen to her great music and beautiful voice because she made a mistake in your eyes,What she did does not impare her ability to make great music still. And for all you who say she is washed up.I don’t think that we have heard the last of Faith Hill. Life goes on and she will prosper. As far as wether or not this will make an indeliable mark in how people see her.It only makes that kinda mark if you choose to see her that way.I am a huge fan of Faith Hills and I truly believe that she will come out with more music and it will get better and better as she becomes more placed in Her music and I hope she ends up in the Country music hall of Fame,Cause Faith You deserve it.

Country music is going down hill fast and not because of “Faith Hill” or her husband. It’s because the industry isn’t being true to its roots. It started with Shania Twain and continues with the likes of Keith Urban, Rascal Flats, and Sugarland. I think Faith’s reaction was one of disgust. Carrie Underwood isn’t talented enough to “carrie” Martina’s sheet music. Just my opinion.

Forget Faith Hill’s reaction! It was caught on camera and we all pretty much knew her reaction. My biggest disappointment was in Sarah Evans. When Sarah announced Alison Krauss, who is a very talented woman and much loved and clearly is worthy to have won her past honors, Sarah said something to the effect that “Alison has many CMA awards that she got the hard way,she earned them”, I know I am not the only to pickup on the insult intended for Carrie Underwoood and Ms. Pickler from American Idol. Millions of people with talent are never heard from and there is no denying that the road to fame is hard. However, her comments sounded very catty and unworthy of a lady of class. Ms. Underwood had to beat out thousands of contestants to get in the final cut of American Idol and then compete each week. American Idol was a great vehicle for her but if the public (the fans) did not like her, she would not be where she is today. Other Idol winners have not attained her level of success. Ms. Underwood maintained her poise and generosity in her acceptance speech and she clearly applouded the other ladies in her category. Some of the CMA Divas need to take a page from her book.

Shame on you Sarah and congratulations to you Carrie,

    Anita Larkin

No way was that a joke. The bottom line is that Carrie Underwood is by far a better vocalist that Faith Hill. No matter how many CD’s Faith sells she is still just an OK focalist. The fact that she is beautiful and seems like such a nice person has helped make her a star. I have been a big fan. Now, I am disappointed. What a spoiled brat!! The other nominees are in a higher league than Faith Hill in terms of talent. Does noone else see that?

Some of CMA Divas need to take a page from her book.

Shame on you Sarah and congratulations to you Carrie,

    Anita Larkin

She was pissed. Her true colors have truly come out recently. In recent interviews she has shown real resentment and has come across as a total spoiled brat when talking about the fact her husband has not been awarded the proper recognition he deserves…he’s the best entertainer out there….bla bla bla. I always kind of censed that side of her, and now she makes it easy to see. She’s a total brat.
