Do you have what it takes to be Canada’s next Great Prime Minister? If so, you could be one of five candidates to compete in the second annual Next Great Prime Minister contest; a one-hour primetime television special airing in February, 2007.
The Next Great Prime Minister contest provides a forum for 18 to 25-year-old Canadians who wish to share their ideas for making Canada a better, stronger and more prosperous country. Candidates must submit a three to five-minute video with their “Prime Ministerial Message” and will compete for a $50,000 first-place cash prize. The remaining four finalists will each receive $5,000. All five finalists will also win a coveted Dominion, Magna, Fulbright (DMF) Fair Enterprise and Public Policy Internship.
Judges will select the 20 best applicants based on originality of ideas and effectiveness of delivery. The candidates are then interviewed in order to test their ability to support their ideas, test their knowledge of current events, and to see how well they respond to questions. Five finalists will then be selected for the nationally broadcast Next Great Prime Minister television show. This year’s finalists will again be judged by former Canadian Prime Ministers: The Right Hon. Joe Clark, The Right Hon. Kim Campbell, The Right Hon. John Turner, and The Right Hon. Brian Mulroney, and one other person to be named soon.
Magna International, The Dominion Institute and the Fulbright Institute will be sponsoring this year’s Next Great Prime Minister contest. The purpose of this program is to engage young Canadians in the political process by encouraging them to think about ways to improve Canada. The contest also provides a platform through which new and innovative ideas generated by Canadian youth can be shared with all of Canada.
The 2005 show was a great success with approximately 800,000 viewers tuning in nationwide. Past winners of the Next Great Prime Minister contest have gone on to successful careers as political staffers on parliament hill, Members of Parliament, city councilors and successful business leaders. Last year’s winner, Deirdra McCracken, has since become press secretary for the Federal Minister of Indian Affairs.
