Reality TV Programs Dominate Nielsen Most Popular Lists For 2006

Several Nielsen media tracking businesses recently released a year-end look at the most popular media trends among Americans during 2006.  This is the first time the Nielsen companies have released a compilation of "Top 10′s" for the Nielsen brands.  The Nielsen companies, owned by VNU, deliver the most comprehensive media and marketing measurement systems in the world.  Reality TV Programs dominated the top of many of the television media related lists.

Four of the top five regularly scheduled TV programs were reality TV programs.  However, the American Idol and Dancing with the Stars performance and results shows were counted separately, so they took two spots each in the top five.  American Idol’s Tuesday show was the number one ranked program for 2006.

For the top ten single telecasts TV programs, four different episodes of American Idol landed in the top ten.  The American Idol finale on May 24, 2006 was the top ranked single episode reality TV program, taking the number seven position in the top ten. 

Even though reality TV programs ranked highly on the top ten TV programs lists, reality TV programs were even more dominating when it came to the shows with the most product placement.  Nine of the top ten TV programs in regards to occurrences of product placement were reality TV programs.  Reality Shows topping the product placement occurrences list included American Idol, Amazing Race, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, The Biggest Loser, America’s Next Top Model, Hell’s Kitchen, The Apprentice, Rock Star Supernova, and Big Brother 7.  Complete “Top 10′s” lists are presented below.

    Even though reality TV programs ranked highly on the top ten TV programs lists, reality TV programs were even more dominating
