In the premiere episode of Grease You’re The One That I Want, men and women auditioned in front of a panel of three judges for the roles of Danny and Sandy in Grease. The first round of the auditions focused on singing skills and occurred in Los Angeles and Chicago. Just like American Idol, there were a mixture of great singers and awful singers.
Judges Kathleen Marshall (director and choreographer on new production of Grease), Jim Jacobs (the co-creator of Grease), and theater producer David Ian all attempted their best Simon Cowell impressions. Unfortunately, none of them came close to matching Simon’s skill at the insult.
Billy Bush attempted to play the Ryan Seacrest role of sympathizing with the rejected contestants. At one point, Billy went as far as to bring a contestant named Fawn back out to get another chance with the judges. The end result was the same, and Fawn received her second rejection from the judges.
The second round of the auditions focused on dancing skills. The men and women who had made it through the first round danced in groups in front of the judges. The three judges then delivered the news to the ones that had made it through by telling them, “You’re the one that we want to go to Grease Academy.”
