Grease Judges Select Twelve Finalists

January 21, 2007 10:55 PM by Joe Reality

Grease_12finalistsAt Grease Academy, the contestants started off by singing in front of
judges Jim Jacobs and Kathleen Marshall.  Contestant Kelli La Valle
faced the additional challenge of having to work with a tutor to
complete her schoolwork since she was still in high school.  Despite a
toe injury that ended her career goal of becoming a ballerina, Ashley
Spencer is one of the early standouts for the Sandy role.  Jim Jacobs
expressed his concern that no one up for the Danny role had knocked his
socks off as the next Elvis.

For their challenge, the contestants were asked to learn a new fifties song in just two hours.  In a group sing-off, David Ian walked through and tapped people on the shoulder that were eliminated.  One of the most surprising eliminations was Dominic Fortuna, the only older contestant to make it to Grease Academy.  One has to wonder if his elimination had more to do with his age than his singing ability.  At the end of the Danny and Sandy massacre, there were twenty-four contestants left standing.

The twenty four remaining contestants then performed in a showcase in front of a live audience.  After the showcase, the three judges selected the twelve contestants that would move forward to the viewer voting stage of the competition.  The six Danny’s selected were Jason Celaya, Derek Keeling, Chad Doreck, Kevin Greene, Austin Miller, and Max Crumm.  The six Sandy’s selected were Allie Schultz, Kathleen Monteleone, Kate Rockwell, Laura Osnes, Juliana Hansen, and Ashley Spencer.

Juliana Hansen is the cousin of my wife. My six year old daughter saw her picture in a newspaper article and held the newspaper to her heart. I hope she wins. Our family is already so happy for her.
