American Idol Producer Suggests Being Called A Bush Baby Is A Good Thing
February 11, 2007 04:42 PM by Joe Reality
When Simon Cowell called American Idol contestant Kenneth Briggs a bush
baby, it set off a flood of media articles suggesting that the American
Idol judges were being crueler this season. Of course as Reality TV
Magazine reported, the American Idol judges are really just as mean as
they’ve ever been, not substantially worse or better.
In a media conference call, Nigel Lythgoe faced the question of cruelness and rushed to the defense of his star judge Simon Cowell. Lythgoe took probably one of the most unusual approaches to defending the bush baby comment yet, when he eloquently argued that it wasn’t an insult.
Lythgoe said “The ‘bush baby’ comment, for goodness sake, is not even – he came out and said, ‘He called me a monkey.’ Well, a bush baby isn’t even a monkey. A bush baby has got rather beautiful big eyes, and that is not a criticism as far as I can see to say he looked like a bush baby. If you talked to any animator, they will say that they will draw big eyes on anything that they want you to love. If you look at Bambi, ET, or any other creature that’s created, they drew big eyes on it, because it’s loveable. So I didn’t class it as a derogatory comment when he said it, and I still don’t.”
