Grease You’re The One That I Want Changes The Rules And Infuriates Some Viewers

February 12, 2007 01:04 AM by Joe Reality

Matt_ashley_eliminatedIn one of the most outrageous moves ever in a reality TV competition,
Grease You’re The One That I Want has changed the rules of the game and
infuriated many viewers of the show.  Once the top fourteen were
selected, viewers were led to believe that their votes would determine
which Danny and which Sandy would be going home.

However, instead of revealing the results of America’s vote and eliminating one Danny and one Sandy at the beginning of the show as promoted by NBC, host Denise Van Outen announced “In an amazing twist, America’s two least favorite Dannys and Sandys must sing for their survival in order to stay in this competition.”

The decision of who was going home went from being in America’s hands to being back in the judges hands.  The two Sandys in the bottom two were Allie Schulz and Ashley Anderson.  The two Dannys in the bottom two were Jason Celaya and Matt Nolan.  Before the bottom four competed in a sing off for their survival, host Billy Bush revealed that Jason and Allie received the lowest number of votes from America.

However, after the sing off, the panel of judges elected to save Jason Celaya and Allie Schulz, which reversed the decision that had been made by America.  The reason the judges gave for saving Jason was because Broadway was no place for beginners, and the reason the judges gave for saving Allie was because they had no idea why she was in the bottom two.  Because of this decision by the judges, Matt Nolan and Ashley Anderson were eliminated from the competition.  Ironically, Matt and Ashley were the two singers that the judges had brought back just two weeks ago, because they felt they deserved a second chance.

Needless to say, many fans on NBC’s official Grease You’re The One That I Want message board are outraged by the sudden rule change that snatched the ultimate decision out of the hands of viewers.  Angry posters are accusing the show of false advertising and questioning why they should continue to vote if the judges are just going to override their decisions.

I also think it wasn’t fair, but NBC won’t do anything about it so we might as well forget it…

Sounds to me like the judges liked one of the people America put in the bottom two and didn’t want to see them get the boot, so they change the rules to keep them around.

    Clever.

It’s the exact same format as How to Solve a Problem Like Maria…the model for this show…with the same producers. It’s been that way from the beginning. They just didn’t “announce” the “twist” until now. Sorry people feel misled, but they didn’t cheat or change the rules. I figured it out over a week ago by reading about Maria, as did others.

I was glad to see Laura and Max get the parts. They were the most talented, however, I’m concerned about the rest of the cast. While Laura and Max are convincing as teenagers, those other members of the cast look way too old for the parts. I would like to suggest that the producers reconsider their choices for those roles (while they still can) and take another look at the contestants from the show. They were all very talented, and convincing as teenagers. Any of them would be great at supporting roles in the play…but not that mottly group we saw on finale night. Every one of them were much too old looking for the parts…totally not convincing!
