According to American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe, the reason that the
Hollywood week cut from 172 contestants down to 40 contestants is being
done in one episode rather two episodes is because “There wasn’t that
much that occurred in Hollywood that warranted two episodes. We
normally stretch it out too far.”
Lythgoe makes a very good point in that the Hollywood episodes have often been one of the slowest and most boring parts of the show. Devoting less time to Hollywood week is probably the right call, even though it might be tough on viewers who might only get to see a glimpse of one of their favorites from the audition episodes who doesn’t make it through.
American Idol Hollywood Auditions air on Fox on Tuesday, February 13 from 8:00 to 9:00 PM ET/PT. In this episode, the contestants will endure a grueling rehearsal schedule and group auditions before being cut from 172 contestants down to 40 contestants.
American Idol Top 24 Semifinalists show airs on Fox on Wednesday, February 14 from 9:00 to 10:00 PM ET/PT. In this episode, the American Idol judges will cut the contestants down from 40 to only 24 semifinalists.
