Is Lakisha Jones American Idol’s New Frontrunner?

February 22, 2007 01:14 AM by Joe Reality

Lakisha_jones_photoWith one powerful performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,”
Lakisha Jones staked her claim to take home the title of winner of
American Idol 6.  As Simon Cowell put it, “I’m very tempted to say to
twenty-three people, book your plane tickets home.”  Who is this
incredible singer who appears to have become the new frontrunner on
American Idol?

Lakisha’s first appearance on American Idol 6 came during “The Rest Of The Best” audition show.  Lakisha impressed the judges with an amazing rendition of “Think” by Aretha Franklin.  After her performance, Simon Cowell immediately let his feelings be known and said “Loved this girl.  Love you, Lakisha, you’re a good old-fashioned belter.”  When she found out that she had made it to Hollywood, Lakisha ran out of the audition room, hugged her three year old daughter and cried tears of happiness.

According to her American Idol profile, Lakisha Jones is twenty-seven years old and her current hometown is Forte Meade, Maryland.  However, Lakisha Jones was actually born and raised in Flint, Michigan.  It seems fitting that Lakisha Jones grew up in the blue-collar city of Flint, Michigan, because part of her appeal is her strong work ethic and devotion to her family.  When Simon Cowell asked Lakisha during the top twenty-four selection show what she would do if she didn’t make it through, Lakisha replied “I’ll go back to my daughter at home, who will be four next month, and back to working at the bank.”  After she found out that she had made the top twenty-four, a tearful Lakisha thanked the judges for the opportunity.

In what had to be a perfect coincidence, the fourth birthday of Lakisha’s daughter fell on the same day as her first performance as part of the American Idol top twenty-four.  We have a feeling that Lakisha’s breakout performance on American Idol and the rave reviews from the judges likely proved to be the perfect birthday gift for her daughter.  After her top twenty-four performance, Randy Jackson echoed the sentiments that Cowell had after her first audition and said “I do love you.”  Post your opinions below on if you think Lakisha Jones is the new frontrunner on American Idol.

She didn’t come close to being as good as Jennifer Hudson. She was okay but I did not see it as a star-making performance.

If I were her, I would not want to known as the frontrunner at this point- because they almost never actually win. Do Anwar Robinson and Ace Young ring a bell? Both were booted off pretty early. She might get the same fate.

Come on! This girl does not need to win. She is already a winner. Please rememeber Hudson’s fate. After 6 season of the idol, winning it is no longer the ultimate goal. All you need is the limelight and a contract. You might be booted off. Yet she will stay around for long.

OMG, Oh My God. LaKisha was the best of the night with Jennifer Hudsons song. Every day I have to listen to that song and it really gets annoying just hearing it from the same person that sings it so I was so happy that LaKisha sang that song last night. The night before with the boys it was never busy. Last night with LaKisha it was busy like crazy. I still have the chills from her singing that song. I thought after Melinda went that she was going to be the best of the night, but Melinda was still the 2nd best of the night. The girls just kept on shining when they came on stage. I thought it was so nice of Melinda and Amy saying the boys did a awesome job the night before. Stephanie was amazing. Amy was just okay. Leslie I think shes going. Sabrina way to go girl. Antonella I thought she was going to be better then she was, i think shes in danger tonight. Jordin way to go only 17 years old. Haley was okay. Melinda was fantastic. Alaina not so great one of the ones going home I think. Gina was really good. And LaKisha not enough words good describe how you were best one ever. I forgot about Nicole I think shes in danger.

With a name like Lakisha, she is a one name performer (Fantasia, Madonna, Jewel, etc). She has the pipes and the personality and blew out the competition. No more bank tellering for you Lakisha, you’re on your way to the top, along with your new CD which will hit #1 the day it’s released right around Christmas. Pencil in Melinda as 2nd place and Stephanie as 3rd. They’re both dynamite and will have CD’s out by fall.
As for fellow Jerseyan(and fellow Italian) Antonella, I hope you get another few weeks. Let’s hope last night didn’t ruin it. Good Luck. And Simon is right. You ARE gorgeous!
The others did ok, some so-so, some blah!! Gina was All By Herself, and I think there should be 9 girls and 3 guys as finalists.
P.S. Hey Shalymar! You’re looking more like your sister every day!

Jennifer is one of my favorites, but Lakisha did a great job on that song, too.
I can’t wait for the theme weeks when I think Lakisha will continue to shine, because of her opera and classical training. So far, it’s hers to lose. Melinda did well, too, along with a couple of others.
It’s going to be an exciting season, as long as Melinda and Lakisha are there.

  28. ANDREW KELLEY Says:
    February 22nd, 2007 at 11:37 am

There were plenty of “pretty” girls there this season who can hum and whine and be breathy off of their nasal pallattes, but only four who performed last night could really belt out their songs with tone and energy and real style. Those were the performers who captured their audiences emotions. That’s real star power. To make even Simon’s eyes pop with a jaw dropped stare and “Good Lord!” written all over his face– that’s real star power. Only two or three have done that in the history of American Idol, and only one has done that every time she’s performed. That singer (a true singer) is Lakisha Jones, and she was the only singer to do it again last night.

In the tradition of greats like Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, and Jennifer Holliday (Jennifer Hudson isn’t quite there, yet), Lakisha can put tremendous power into her conveyance of emotion through her voice– enough to make everyone in the audience and on the other side of the tv screen feel it and remember it for a long time. Some ignorant commentary called her performance “screaming”. Obviously a critique made by yet another someone spoiled by the digitized, track-supported, weak voiced glamor girls over-popularized in videos and on the radio for the past fifteen years. Understand that a good singer can guage his or her power to be explosive or subtle to suit the song. I would rather pay good money to see and hear Lakisha belt out great songs live than watch another truly weak or mediocre voiced performer flounder and crash onstage without the support of back-up singers, support tracks, or even a full studio vocal set to lip-sync to while unoriginal choreography supposedly makes her look “sexy”. As soon as popular music gets back to real talent instead of skin our culture will become open to grow and excel again.

And for the any shallow idiot who simply calls Lakisha “fat”– try to re-open your mind and ears enough to understand that music isn’t someone you see, it’s something you feel and hear. Understand this– someday when the artist is no longer with us (like Luther Vandross or Billie Holliday or Frank Sinatra or Nat “King” Cole)and we can’t look at them anymore, what they looked like won’t matter. That’s because it’s their great singing we’ll still want to listen to and feel for generations to come. It’s that truth we all need to again realize and be blessed with before they’re lost to us among the living.

Lakisha Jones may or may not become one of those greats. But aside from that, is she the best true singer this season? NO DOUBT!!

On Tuesday night the guys sucked. On Wednesday the girls blew…the guys away. Naysays of the ‘06 season what do you say now? Lakisha, amazing. Wow! Melinda, terrific! These girls belted out numbers with star quality, and Jordan, Stephanie and Sabrina are also worth noting. Big things and big talent here! It’s a shame they have to narrow the field to six and six because if talent was the only criteria and gender was removed from the mix, the final 12 would have 9 girls. Only one bad comment about the show: the contrived friction between Simon and Ryan is beginning to gnaw away at my bones. Can’t we all get along?

Okay, LaKisha Rocks!!!! (What are you, like 12?), there’s no need to triple post, and “Jennfier Hudson’s song” is actually Jennifer Holliday’s song. I love Jennifer Hudson, and she did an amazing job in her remake of the tune, but it is Jennifer Holliday from the original cast of Dreamgirls that is da bomb!!!

(Feel like I’m reading “Wayne’s World” reviews screaming what a great new band Queen is…….geez!)

Good luck LaKisha!! We know you’ll be in the Top 12!!

Lakisha blew away everyone last night. She was incredible.

I hope that the AI producers will truly let America vote in who is best instead of keeping around who they want for TV ratings (Kellie Pickler anyone?!?!?!?).

They need to get rid of that stupid 6 guys/6 girls rule they instituted in season 4. Let America choose by talent, not by gender. The girls are head and shoulders much more talented than the guys.

Lakisha and Melinda are the best singers this year. They are in a league of their own.

Lakisha is not only a better singer than Jennifer Hudson, she doesn’t seem to display the same petulance or smugness. I was hoping for Chris Sligh to take it — I think he and Blake are extremely talented — and there are several talented girls, but if last night is any indictation, Lakish ought to win.

  36. Niecy Says:
    February 22nd, 2007 at 12:05 pm

I really liked Lakisha. This seasons of girls reminds me of the season that Jennifer, Fantasia and the other African American young lady was on. “The Divas” I hope that society takes in consideration when voting, the talent of each individual. I told myself that I was gonna stop looking at the show after a disappointing Monday night. The judges fell to choose the best male singers for the top 12. They let males singers thru to the top 12 based on their looks and not talent. I’ve notice that they are putting thur a lot more white singers than any other race. I hate to say it but just keep observing the show. This is for Ms. Charm, you need to check youself. Don’t hate. You’re the who’s pathetic.

  37. ML Says:

He sucked, and will always suck. I just wonder who he was ‘doing’ to win that show. Anyway, I hope that Antonella’s rich Jersey parents buy her some singing lessons cause she STINKS. I was embarrassed for her. Awful did not even begin to describe her. Pretty, yes. So, she can be an exotic dancer… And about that “Brass In Pocket” song that Alina girl sang. Didn’t anyone in her family tell her it sucked. If it was my daughter I would STOP her from singing that shizznit. Anyway. LaKisha, super, super job.

Lakisha was really good, but so was Melinda, and …. Lots of really good female talent this year.

Simon says this is a vocal competition, but America has made it a popularity contest. We will take a guy who may not be the best looking, but for the girls at the top, looks seem to count–not always, but on the average. What will we do this year? Are we cultured enough to go for the best talent, or are we so shallow we are going to stick with the “pretty girl?” Watch, vote, and see the results!

Despite her outstanding singing performances to date, I just hope Lakisha Jones (as well as other current contestants, Sundance Head and Chris Sligh) would work on her physical appearance. While her body shape is somewhat better than that of former Idol contestant Mandisa Hundley, who was awfully obese, Lakisha’s bulkiness is still noticeable to some. Yes, indeed, it is very insulting to tell people to lose weight, but it is a necessity if he or she wants to be healthy in the long run, and it would make such an individual a marketable commodity in the entertainment industries. I am glad that former contestants such as Ruben Studdard and Jennifer Hudson had been taking such step of reshaping their bodies by losing a considerable amount of weight via proper dietings. Those individuals should be greatly commended for it. They are truly American Idols, winner and non-winner alike!

I was so impressed with LaKisha’s performance. From the moment she took that stage it was evident that she had one goal in mind…to leave us in awe! I will say that there were a few other singers last night that did incredibly well…each had their own strengths, but overall I felt LaKisha was in a league all her own. I can’t wait to see how the season unfolds and how each individual develops and changes. It will certainly be a season to remember! Thumbs up LaKisha…you’re absolutely using God’s gift to the best of your ability!! Way to do it :)

Crazy to label Lakisha the winner after one performance. There is so much left to unfold. We still have the dreaded “theme” nights to get through. Lakisha certainly has an amazing talent but can she get through songs that are not in her comfort zone? She seems so far to be a very meek and quiet personality….not necessarily a bad thing but it might rub some viewers the wrong way. Already there is some critique that she seems less than thrilled with making the top 12 or even being on the show. I think it’s nerves and insecurity, but others are wondering if she is simply “dull” when not singing. If we learned anything from the entertainment biz, it’s not always the most talented who get by or make it. There are so many other factors involved. In the meantime, all this pressure on Lakisha by proclaiming her the “winner’ so early and the other losers after ONE performance is ridiculous.

  52. Delia Says:
    February 22nd, 2007 at 3:46 pm

So far aside from a few performances, I’m finding this year’s crop of hopefuls kind of a disappointment. Not enough variety in terms of muscial styllings. No rockers, no country star, no outstanding personalities so far (Melinda Doolittle the exception as she projects a really amazing vibe). As for Lakisha, she sang incredibly. But she needs to stop looking like she’s about to fall asleep once her singing stops. She seems pained to even smile. I remember in an interview where SImon said he actually though that vocally Jennifer Hudson had a better singing voice than Fantasia but that Fantasia had “the spark”, the right mix of star persona and vocal ability. I hope Lakisha finds her inner star persona, not just when she’s singing but even when she’s not.

LaKisha Jones blew the other American Idol contestants out of the water. Hell, I was standing on my feet giving her a standing ovation when she was done. Its sad that many are looking at her as a “charity” case. This contest should be based on talent and talent only – not how a person looks or his/her background. By the way, LaKisha is in a league of her own. Jennifer Hudson? Who that? Stop hating and give Lakisha her props! Keep doing what you do LaKisha! You rock babygirl!

Lakisha is going to win Idol and FINALLY be the first Blue Stater from Maryland to win it this year, in the finale, Lakisha will have to face either Jordin Sparks OR Melinda Doolittle OR even Blake Lewis.

    February 22nd, 2007 at 8:15 pm

I guess I’m in the minority. I thought Melinda was every bit as good as Lakisha. I loved them both. They are definitely my top two favourites. However Stephanie, Sabrina and Jordan aren’t too far off. The women definitely outshine the men this year. The best of the men, there were only a few good ones, don’t come close to those five women. Rock on Ladies!!!

  56. Joe Says:

It doesn’t matter if the general public votes Lakisha in as the next American Idol. She’s already a star! Anyone who can knock you off your chair when she sings is already an Idol in my mind. If for some strange reason the rest of the world doesn’t see that, shame on them!

LaKisha is fabulous. Anyone who says otherwise really should get there ears checked. She gave me goosebumps W/O a doubt the girls are the best. I would keep 3 or 4 guys and let the rest be the ladies for the top 12 if that was possible. So it looks like it will be down to the girls after that though.

Talent has nothing to do with weight, height, gender or race. If you’ve got it, you’ve got it.
Lakesha’s got it. Whether she wins or not, she will be entertaining us for many years to come. She is the best thing to happen to American Idol since the show started. Incidentally, the male choices this year all suck. It will be a female winner. Like Simon said, Send the other 23 home now, the contest is OVER.
    GO LAKESHA!

Okay, so I think all this hype is kinda useless. Look, I think that Lakeshia is a very good SINGER. She has a good voice but she was not AS amazing as everyone says. She is very good but I would not ever put her in another league where the other contestants should just pack up and go home. She has had some good performances and she is good but often times the best contestant doesn’t always win. Thats my opinion at least.

Humble apologies for dissing you when it should’ve been Biz (the idiot who called Lakisha a fat woman who screams). Ms. Charm, you are charming (and right); Biz–as I said when I thought you were someone else–sounds to me like you’re more than a little jealous of this woman’s god-given gift. Lakisha can lose weight–you, unfortunately, can’t gain a good ear. Sorry for you about that.

What is this with the ‘physical appearance’ issues some of you people have? Let’s see: Ophrah Winfrey, NOT skinny, Star Jones, NOT skinny, Mahalia Jackson (one of the greatest singers who ever lived) NOT skinny. Jennifer Hudson, NOT skinny. There are hundreds of examples of physically imperfect people who have a gift that we are lucky they share with us. People have weaknesses. Some smoke, some drink, some eat, some do all three. Use your ears next time–IT’S A SINGING COMPETITION!!!!

let’s be real-of all the 24 singers on America’s Idol, Lskisha jones was the best performer. It does not matter what color, height, weight or facial features she has!! period. The contest is not about what you look like, it about your vocal talents. If anyone have a problem with how a person, they really need to talk to the Almighty God, because God made us. If we had the chance to make ourselves, I am sure there would be a whole lot of the same people walking around this earth, and I bet we would be bored as hell. When are we going to stop the hate, what would you say to God when you stand before him, when he asks you “why did you live your life hating someone that was created in my image, and why should I let you in heaven when those people that you hate are also in here?”. What would you say.

Lakisha was stunning. But honestly let’s just hope that America will choose their idol by purely on their capability of singing, not considering on what the idol might look like in tv or camera…Lakisha have to work hard on that. But when it comes to singing, Whitney Houston ( at her best) finally found her match.

Lakisha I am not going to compare you to anyone, because you are in a league all by yourself and you blowed that song out the water. Keep choosing the right songs for your voice, there are other ladies that can sing good on the show, but you are the one shining girl. I keep playing you back and all I can see right now is you being the next AI. Even if you don’t cuz of haters and you will have negative people come your way, because they favored another person, they will always have negative comments that’s what they thrive on, you will still be a winner no matter what, because as soon as you leave the stage I’m sure you will have a contract waiting on you. You are the best and I wish you the all the luck in the world, because with a voice like that you deserve to win. I hope America don’t play games with your career. Keep your head up girl and do your thang.

LMAO at some of these comments, proclaiming Lakisha to be the best singer in American Idol history. LMAO at some of these comments who proclaim Lakisha *outsang* Jennifer Hudson, when Lakisha only sung a minutes worth of the song.

Melinda is a far better singer than Lakisha.

  93. Janet Says:
    March 1st, 2007 at 1:36 pm

It dont matter if Lakisha or melinda win ,cause both are winners already and each will have a contract at the end of the contest. They are both great singers in their own way and already are on their way to fame and greater things. But over all they are two of the best on the show .

  94. Liz Says:
    March 2nd, 2007 at 5:50 pm

Lakisha is AWESOME! She made me cry with her beautiful old-soul voice. I will be SO upset if she doesn’t win this year (even more so than last year when Mandisa was cut WAY too early, IMHO) Quit HATING on her for her weight, extra weight is actually GOOD for the voice because it provides extra “oomph” for the vocal cords. Why do you think so many opera singers are overweight? I was a music major in college and the thinnest voice majors were actually told to GAIN weight…

  95. Deb A. Says:
    March 2nd, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Lakisha is very good, however, Melinda actually blew her out of the water on this past Wednesday. But, realistically speaking, America is fickle. Both of them could actually lose if America doesn’t keep in mind that this is a talent contest and not a popularity contest.

Lakisha is a good singer but Melinda is better, however, I don’t feel either of these would sell many CD’s, they don’t have the ‘look’ that sells in the US. It appears to me that LaKisha already has the diva attitude and most times seems so far removed from the show, I think that comes from no personality. She must think she’s sexy because her big flabby arms and nasty chest is always exposed it makes me want to gag, it makes me want to tell her to cover that ugly stuff up!!! There is a double standard here, they don’t let fat white girls on the show it’s like it’s okay to be fat if you’re black. Yes she’s a good singer but at the end of the day can she sell what AI is promoting? I don’t think so. They were wrong about Fantasia and they’re wrong about LaKisha.
This show is getting worse every year, watch AI Rewind and look at the difference in the singers now and the 1st season, it’s like night and day. Come on judges, you can do better than this!

How terrible of people not to think for themselves!! Well, Lakeisha is a winner regardless. She is a vocal talent, you must agree with that.
    Lakeisha my fave!
I see worry on your face, but never mind. You were the winner from day one. Keep it real as you have been doing. Keep the faith. Maintain your humble nature and someday soon you will propel youself to the top of the charts! Jen

P.S. Every week you are my favorite.
