American Idol – Sanjaya Malakar Dances With Paula Abdul

April 03, 2007 08:19 PM by Joe Blackmon

Sanjaya_dances_paulaFor the American Idol Top Nine performance show, the finalists were
mentored by Tony Bennett.  Blake Lewis performed “Mack The Knife.”
Randy Jackson said “That was very good way to start off the evening.”
Paula Abdul said “Tonight, you personified pizzazz.”  Simon Cowell said
“I give you seven out of ten, I’ll give the band eight out of then
though.”

Phil Stacey performed “Night & Day.”  Randy Jackson said “I just didn’t feel any real connection.”  Paula Abdul said “The good news is you’re reminiscent of a young Frank Sinatra, I think so, but the constructive criticism is I still need you to just have more joy.”  Simon Cowell said “I think it had all the joy of somebody singing in a funeral parlor.”

Melinda Doolittle performed “I’ve Got Rhythm.”  Randy Jackson said “You come out here every week and you give everyone here a lesson in singing.”  Paula Abdul said “You’re like a master class for everyone else to watch.”  Simon Cowell said “I don’t think we’re ever going to be able to criticize you.  This is a problem.”   When Ryan Seacrest asked why that was a problem, Simon Cowell replied “Because we like being mean to people occasionally.”

Chris Richardson performed “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”  Randy Jackson said “I think this is one of your best performances of the whole season.”  Paula Abdul said “You made it so hip and so cool.”  Simon Cowell said “I thought that was very good actually, Chris.”

Jordin Sparks performed “On A Clear Day.”  Randy Jackson said “You’re like a pro, and you’re seventeen.”  Paula Abdul said “You really are this magnet of joy.”  Simon Cowell said “I just think you sang a song very well, but it was very old fashioned, very traditional.”

Gina Glocksen performed “Smile.”  Randy Jackson said “That was a very nice, controlled performance for the rocker girl.”  Paula Abdul said “That was a flawless performance, understated, beautiful, and sentimental.”  Simon Cowell said “I can’t rave about the vocals, sorry Gina.”

Sanjaya said “My goal this week is to make America see that I actually can sing.”  Sanjaya Malakar performed “Cheek to Cheek.”  Sanjaya had his hair slicked back and danced with Paula Abdul during his performance.  Randy Jackson said “What I like about you now is you’ve turned into a great entertainer.”  Paula Abdul said “I get why people love you.”  Simon Cowell said “Let’s try a different tactic this week.  Incredible.”

Haley Scarnato performed “Ain’t Misbehavin’.”  Randy Jackson said “What do you think Paula?”  Paula Abdul said “Did I mention green’s a good color for you?”  Simon Cowell said “I think you’ve got great legs.  Actually, I thought I agree with Randy, it was a good style of music for you.  It was a little bit pageanty I thought.”

Lakisha Jones performed “Stormy Weather.”  Randy Jackson said “I loved this, this was the perfect song for you.”  Paula Abdul said “You sound beautiful, it proves that we all Tony Bennett.”  Simon Cowell said “Back on form, Lakisha, that was a sassy, great performance.”

Who will be the next finalist to be eliminated from the competition?  Well, the judges sent a pretty clear message about what they thought of Phil Stacey’s performance.  It will be difficult for him to overcome both performing early in the show as well as being heavily criticized by the judges.  We predict that Phil Stacey will be the next finalist to go home.

I heard some of the performances at rickey.org, and they sang very well!! Finally, I get to hear the kind of music I want to relax to!! Anyway, it’s too close to call who is going home tomorrow, so voting will be very important!!

    WHATEVER!!!
Chris did better than I have ever seen him do, though I still don’t like him enough to vote for him. Blake, the clear american idol, had a bit of a boring preformance tonight, but he is still fun to watch. Lakisha was brilliant!http://lakishajones.net

Melinda and LaKisha have the best singing voices. Sanjaya should have been off the show to allow another participants more opportunities to show their talent.

I really think the judges are not really listening to Sanjaya’s singign anymore, they have this idea about him that he can’t sing and stick to that. Did they not hear that even Tony Bennet says Sanjaya sings good? Are they deaf??? You know, the judges are just angry that america doesn’t listen to their advice, and then they take it out on Sanjaya. Sanjaya has such a warm nice voice to listen to. I enjoy him amd Jordin more then anyone else in the show, actually I only like the two of them. The rest of them just puts me asleep, they don’t get to my heart, notinhg! Being an idol is not just about having a big voice, It’s about touching people’s hart with your voice and performance an personality, and Sanjaya has all of that. He was just awesome tonight! I am happy that america listens better then the judges. Vot for Sanjaya, he is a real idol!!!

Maybe the judges learned that the more they criticize the Indian boy the more sympathy votes for him. So Simon said he’ll try another tactic, praise this boy and said “he’s incredible”, of what? Yeah of his hair, I got it! As long as its not yet the Final 3, there still hope for AI to redeem itself from oblivion. The judges put him there and now they want get rid off him by being nice to him and may be think he doesn’t exist.

PEOPLE DID YOU HEAR MR. BENNET SAID ABOUT SANJAYA… HE CAN SING GOOD… IT COMES FROM A PERSON WHO REALLY CAN SING… I DON’T KNOW WHY YOU JAYA HATERS WON’T SHUT UP… AND GUESS WHO IS BECOMING A GREAT ENTERTAINER???? LIKE I SAID BEFORE IT NOT ONLY YOUR VOICE… TO BE AN AI…

You people have ZERO taste in music. Lakisha totally butchered that song omg it was awful and don’t even get me started on Sanjaya. He’s such a joke I cannot believe anyone actually thinks he can sing. The best of the night were Blake, Chris, and Melinda. Jordin has a very nice voice but I found her performance kinda boring. Haley sang like she was competing for Miss USA. Sorry honey, looks alone will not save you this week.

The judges VERY OBVIOUSLY have their favorites and are going to push them to the final no matter how well some of the contestants perform. Their comments can sway people to vote for or against performers. They need to be critique in a manor that allows the views to select their favorites.

As Randy says keeping it real. The bottom three tonight were Sanjya, Lakisha, and Blake. I would send Sanjya or Lakisha off. But we all know that won’t happen. Haley, Gina, and Phil were safe performances…..not great but better than bottom three. Jordin, Chris, and Melinda were tops with the best of the night being Chris. Truthfully I wouldn’t give to ten cents for any of them. They’re all average at best. Not one of them would have made top 3 last year or any year for that matter. A sorry bunch.

lakisha is the best singer to ever hit american idol. with that said i dont think she is the best performer or the next american idol. blake will be the most successful contestant from this season and i hope he wins. melinda doolittle will flop after this show win or lose (hopefully lose).

  22. Sick of it... Says:
    April 3rd, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Is it just me or does anyone else think Melinda is fake? Every week it’s the same routine “I’m so happy to be here, oh gosh you think I’m good…I can’t believe it. Aw shucks!” I’m sick of it, I hate phony people and I can’t stand the way Melinda acts. I have to shut my eyes when she performs. I wish she’d just own up to being so talented. Also, I hate that the judges pick favorites, it totally influences the voting. It happened with Ruben and Fantasia, they pick their winner early on and throughout the season the continuously praise that contestant no matter what. I will be very dissapointed if Melinda Doolittle wins this season…she is not the American Idol…

Must i remind those people who tries to belittle Sanjaya not just because of his singing but because of his ethnicity. I am a caucasian and I am proud to say that Asian-Indians are kindhearted, loving and very smart and professional people. In the US and in England about 78 percent of practicing doctors are of minority descent. Half of that are Asian Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino,

We have different preferences in choosing our idol. Like most people, i admire Melinda Doolittle b/c she owns the stage every time she performs. Her style may not be contemporary or hip, esp. to the young viewers, but nevertheless, her voice is the kind that can be appreciated by people from any generation. Classic. Timeless.

Let’s just hope the best for all the contestants. Whether win or lose. AI is just one of the opportunities out there. Others may think AI is their only opportunity but if God doesn’t want to how can you go against it, unless you don’t believe in HIM. Always give your best shot! I’m just tired of hearing about some few people saying Indian boy being young and he can still improve and Jordin is also 17 but she’s much, much better than him. I just want to qoute Ryan Seacrest appeal during AI season 3, “America vote for the talent!”

I think that the final 3 will be (should be) three of the girls who I wont say, And while a few of the guys can realy sing they are not at the level of the girls. As for Sanjya he him self knows that he is AI’s big joke and has shown that, Yes he can be a funny guy to watch and ok maybe he is not the worst singer ever seen on the show but he is not a quality singer not close. Maybe he could do a duet with William Hung.

This performance night I think phil is a very good choice to send home. But still i want sanjaya to be off in this competition. I dont know why simon, paula and randy like lakisha’s performance I think it sucks. Melinda remain the same but she’s not suited for the title IDOL! Because she’s kinda boring. Blake stay in the safe zone with his performance. Chris I think this night your the best pal! Jordin is still amazing. I think Haley will be eliminated soon. Gina is safe for her performance this night. This is my “OWN” ranking for the performance this time:

    9.Sanjaya
    8.Phil
    7.Lakisha
    6.Haley
    5.Gina
    4.Blake
    3.Jordin
    2.Melinda
    1.Chris

And the bottom three this week will be Phil, Haley, Gina.

Blake- This white trash should not be on this stage. Do NOT VOTE ON BLAKE. He has Tattoos!!! NOT a role model for our children unless you want to see them in prison. I’m tired of him prancing around the stage like a little girl. Completely off-key and out of sync with the band, he was terrible. This guy is the equivalent of a snooze button- 5 minutes of sleep.

Phil- This freak needs chemotherapy, not another week on American Idol. He’s ugly and he should be disqualified for trying to get votes by always pointing out he has a fat and ugly wife so people will feel sorry for him. I can’t even look at him, it’s like watching a monster movie. He was completely out of tune the entire song. He’s a loser and nothing but garbage.

Melinda- I’m tired of people saying how good she is. She’s NOTHING compared to Carrie Underwood or Kellie Pickler! She’s still better than the other trashy girls.

Jordon- BORING, BORING, BORING. I once had a student like her- she had a man body like Jordon. You don’t forget the kind of body type Jordon has- deformed, mannish, a little bit like Quasimodo. I feel sorry for her- those fat ankles, that huge butt- I’m sure the other girls are scared to dress with her. I’d like her but the he-girl can’t sing one note in tune. This is a singing competition, after all. Another boring song choice. I think she might be a hermafrodike- I sent an email to FOX to check this out so don’t be surprised if she gets disqualified.

Gina- DEVIL-GIRL!!! OUT!!! OUT!!! GET OUT!!! DEVIL-GIRL!!! GET THE HELL OUT!!!! OUT!!!!

Chris- Thank goodness that other pig named Chris is gone. This one is a STAR!! Did you see that intro? It was like Michael Jackson, whom I adore!! What charisma! His voice is like BUTTER! Another classic performance! He’s brilliant, I LOVE HIM!

HALEY- TRASH!! She wears a SLUTTY DRESS and thinks this show is some sort of WHOREHOUSE for her to flash her saggy boobs and her worn-out crotch all over the stage!!! Children watch this SHOW!!! This is a Christian show and this tramp has the NERVE to go out looking like a prostitute with her horrid vocals! I want her OFF THIS SHOW!!!! DO YOU HEAR ME??! OFF!!! This isn’t PORN IDOL! Get back to morality, America!!!

Sanjaya- I just can’t believe in our time of war, they are going to parade this guy from Iraq on this show! It’s an insult to President Bush and our boys overseas!!! It’s those left-wing liberal nuts like Jane Fonda and that awful Hillary Clinton that are keeping and voting this guy to stay on the show!! They should use the Patriot Act to take this guy off the show! It’s nothing but anti-war propaganda! And Simon saying he was “incredible”- I was speechless- he must be another left-winger who has been brainwashed. I AM DISGUSTED AT THIS!! It’s SICK and OUTRAGEOUS!!

Lastinka Jones- I think they have her go last because they are scared she is going to collapse the stage. She looks like a sick hippo up there. It’s not because she is any good, because her “stormy weather” was AWFUL. Another terrible performance.

Chris was the only great one- and Melinda was okay but not as good as Carrie or Kellie on their worst day. The rest are nothing but scum.

Like you, I was hoping Sanjaya would perform trribly so that he could be voted out. However, I must admit that Sanjaya sang better than Phli, Haley and Blake and he might just make it. I agree that Dolittle is somewhat fake eventhough she is a terrific singer. Sanjaya has an honest stage personality.

I am amazed at the fact that American Idol still has such a massive audience. I am not surprised that Sanjaya is getting all of this attention. We live in an age of reality television. The most extreme characters are the one’s that are remembered and that get jobs when the show is over. New York from “Flavor of Love” is the perfect example. She was the most extreme character and got a show of her own. It is amazing however how bigger issues are ignored and a contestant on American Idol is the most talked about topic of the day. I do not watch American Idol but I must admit, all of the controversy has sparked my interest and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to tune in to see what it is all about.

As far as Sanjaya – I share your concern. I boils my blood to think about how those demoncrats are destroying this great country’s constitional principles. I even heard one Senator publicly declare that she doesn’t serve at the pleasure of the President!! I haven’t read the entire Patriot Act but I believe that’s enough to get her thrown out of office and imprisioned.

    9. Phil-GOING HOME TONIGHT

    8. Chris R-going home next week

    7. Haley-I just can’t see Texas saving her again, unless she pulls a Jasmine Trias and start crying again.

    4. Lakisha

    3. Blake

Rovelover — The name of the person posting is at the bottom. Your response to “Kerr” was really to something written by “Debbie”, and a very disturbed person she is.

  47. Ted Says:
    April 4th, 2007 at 11:59 am

Okay, someone from Reality TV Magazine really needs to read the postings and actually follow-up on their restrictions. Hate postings like Donna Lane/Debbie Logan really need to be removed. Diseased minds like really shouldn’t be allowed to have a voice as it only acknowledges them. And really, all she is is a attention-starved troll.

Regarding my “picks” from last night. I really think the bottom three are Phil, Gina and Haley. Phil has a nice high range, but really needs training in his chest voice as he has pitch problems there. He needs to work on working himself up. Yet again, he wasted his first 30 seconds or so of his 1:30 with a week performance. Gina has a nice voice, but she has such bad control over it and very little understanding of music outside her very tight niche. I agree with the judges that Haley has done very well with what she has. She has a good voice, but not a great voice and she should be happy to be in the top-10, but she really has shown about all she has to show (except maybe more skin). What you’ve seen so far is the limit of her talent level and it just isn’t up to snuff.

I’m surprised there are so many Blake fans out there that actually liked his rendition of “Mack the Knife” I’ve known and heard that song so many times over the years and that was one of the eeriest, flatest performances. Instead of a gangster, Mack the Knife turned into a serial stalker. I think this will be the title track to Friday the 13th Part XXIV. It was so pitchy that the melody almost got lost. He was frequently drifting sharp on the low notes and flat on the top notes to narrow the range of the song by almost a note and a half. But he is still a better performer than the ones I noted as bottom-3 above. Until the top-5 or so, Blake is one of the ones that can sail on through on a weaker performance like last night.

And Sanjaya is really a bad singer, but as Randy said, he is turning into an entertainer. He will attract attention from the prepubescent crowd (ala Minuedo) and hence has popularity, but let’s not mistake him for a good singer. However, he has a career. Many an average or weak singer has gone on to a successful entertainment career.

PEOPLE ARE SAYING BLAKE IS NOT THAT GOOD. BLAKE IS AWESOME. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I think Phil Stacey was not that great last night and should go home. Melinda Doolittle, I agree with simon I can never say anything mean about her. She can sing. Chris Richardson was excellent. Jordin Sparks was very good. Gina Glocksen was great. Sanjaya Malakar was better then he usually is. Haley Scarnato was better, but hated what she was wearing and Lakisha Jones was wonderful. This is my ranking and I think it was the best show yet this season.
    9) Phil Stacey
    8) Haley Scaranto
    7) Gina Glocksen
    6) Sanjaya Malakar
    5) Chris Richardson
    4) Jordin Sparks
    3) Lakisha Jones

    1) Melinda Doolittle

Were the judges all drunk last night?? That was the absolute WORST version of “Mack the Knife” I’ve EVER heard! Chris wasn’t much better….

If you want to hear how these songs should be done….then take a listen to ROBBIE WILLIAMS “Swing While You’re Winning”…to see how a contemporary talented singer personally interprets Swing songs!

They need to FIX the SOUND in the concert hall so the judges can really hear what’s going on. I think that Randy is in LOVE with Blake & Chris who are incredible Light-Weights in Vocals & Performance. I feel like I’m watching a high school Talent Show when Blake, Chris, Hayley, Gina, & Sanjaya are on stage. It’s pitiful!

Sanjaya cant sing, its stupid how people listen to retarted howard Stern. Rumor is that all he cares about is reality tv. Sanjaya should be elminated because he is so gay and creepy. He probalbaly does the same thing Micheal Jackson doesa to little kids.

“Also, I hate that the judges pick favorites, it totally influences the voting. It happened with Ruben and Fantasia,”

Yeah, they certainly did not push Carrie in our faces at all. The innocent country girl who had been touring the country with her band for several years (something they forgot to mention).

But was okay, because she was the right shade.

I can’t believe that I felt sorry for Sanjaya in the beginning! He can’t sing to save his life! American Idol is the Titanic, and Sanjaya is the iceberg, because 2 million people have tuned out because of him! He’s the new Antonella!

    This week’s ranking:
    Worst)Sanjaya Malakar (what a surprise)
8)Haley Scarnato (so what if she’s hot?)
    7)Lakisha Jones (going downhill fast)
    6)Blake Lewis
    5)Gina Glocksen
4)Phil Stacey (OPEN YOUR EARS PEOPLE!!)
    3)Jordin Sparks
    2)Chris Richardson
    1)Melinda Doolittle

I think all of America is prejudiced to say the LEAST. Here u have a chap with a good voice, good deliverance, talent and a gutsy determination, besides he knows his music and what the audience loves, he’s a real entertainer, Besides, he’s not Iraqi, he’s indian – (safe as hell) why do we have to make all the terrible remarks ( a la Kerr nd Nancy – boo to you) He has something that i think will prove he will outlast all the other nightclub finalists listed so far

Ive been rooting for sanjaya since this season began.
He has a incredibly nice voice during the season’s audition. i think it just gets dispersed when he uses the microphone.
His voice is not good for the stage. That’s probably why tony bennett said he was good because he was listening to sanjaya’s raw singing voice up close.

lakisha jones- she’s very distracting. When she sings or even opens her mouth, she’s like a fish breathing underwater.

melinda doolittle- best voice for this season.

and for others. They didnt make an impression.

Basically, the problem that a regular American Idol viewer has to deal with is to whether he/she should close her eyes or press the mute button of the clicker. The contestants are either better heard than seen or better seen than heard.

There isnt a single contestant who embodies the qualities of a marketable popstar commodity
