American Idol Top Eight – Sanjaya One Of The Smartest Contestants Ever

April 10, 2007 08:14 PM by Joe Blackmon

Sanjaya_besame_muchoJennifer Lopez mentored the remaining eight American Idols finalists
during Latin theme week.  Jennifer Lopez professed to watching American
Idol at her house, but she wouldn’t reveal who her favorite was.

Melinda Doolittle sang “Sway.”  Randy Jackson said “I’m telling you, another solid performance.”  Paula Abdul said “Very, very sultry.  Very smooth.”  Simon Cowell said “Well, it had to happen, Melinda, I didn’t like it.  I’ll tell you why because that song is all about personality, and you appeared much, much older than you are.”  When Ryan Seacrest asked Melinda about Simon’s comments, she said “I’m happy, because I think he really wanted to say something bad, and I’m glad he got the chance.”

Lakisha Jones sang “Conga.”  Randy Jackson said “You were having the best time, having fun, you made it your own.”  Paula Abdul said “First, you look lovely, but I didn’t feel it as much as Randy did.  I felt it was more of a real safe Lakisha performance.”  Simon Cowell said “You were having fun, I’m not sure how much fun everyone at home would be [having] though.”  Ryan Seacrest told Simon Cowell, “What I wouldn’t pay to see you try to do that though.”  Simon Cowell snapped back “I’m sure you would pay a lot.”

Chris Richardson sang “Smooth.”  Randy Jackson said “You did a really good job.”  Paula Abdul said “It was a hot, hot performance.”  Simon Cowell said “I’m not going to say it was the best vocal I ever heard, because it wasn’t, but I actually preferred it to the first two, because it felt more contemporary.”

Haley Scarnato sang “Turn The Beat Around.”  Randy Jackson said “That was really karaoke for me tonight.”  Paula Abdul said “It’s not a singer’s song, but it’s a fun song.”  Simon Cowell said “I think you have a very good tactic at the moment Haley, wear the least amount of clothes as possible.  Because and look I’ll be honest with you, you can’t do well in this competition based on your voice because there are much better singers.”

Phil Stacey sang “Maria Maria.”  Randy Jackson said “You didn’t quite for me connect with the passion in that song.”  Paula Abdul said “Vocally, I thought with the exception of just the end there it was a real good vocal.”  Simon Cowell said “I found no originality in the performance.  I thought it was all a bit lifeless, a bit flat, your voice cracked towards the end, so there’s nothing I can get particularly positive or excited about to be honest with you.”

Jordin Sparks sang “The Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.”  Randy Jackson said “You got it, because you’ve got it.”  Paula Abdul said “I love that you’re just so authentic, and you’re you.”  Simon Cowell said “We all know Jordin you’re a good singer, I haven’t seen a progression though tonight and that’s very frustrating for me.”

Blake Lewis sang “I Need To Know.”  Randy Jackson said “Best song choice of the night.”  Paula Abdul said “Very smart performance.”  Simon Cowell said “Blake, best choice of song for the night, best performance so far.”

Sanjaya Malakar sang “Besame Mucho.”  Randy Jackson said “You’re one of the smartest contestants I’ve ever met, dude.  That was actually really good.”  Paula Abdul said “Really good pitch, smooth, it was nice.”  Simon Cowell said “I couldn’t understand a word of it.  You sang like a fourteen year old, and I’m going to hate myself for this.  It wasn’t horrible.”

Who will be going home next?  It’s likely to come down to between Phil Stacey and Haley Scarnato, but everyone with the exception of Blake Lewis and Sanjaya Malakar should consider themselves at risk.  Even though Melinda, Lakisha, and Jordin have been excellent in the competition to date, their fans shouldn’t take anything for granted in the voting.  However, in the end, our prediction is that Phil Stacey will be going home, but we also wouldn’t be surprised if it was Haley Scarnato.

I hope you get all the way to the end. Listing all the contestant Melinda Doolittle, Lakisha Jones, Chris Richardson, Hailey Scarnato, Phil Stacey, Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis are very very good.

Latin music is more on the rhythm and not on the vocals. But there are some crossover artists who are vocally gifted. Its a good thing that no songs of J-Lo had been performed. As usual, the Indian boy chose a song that suits his weak voice and the judges are praising him again (reverse psychology perhaps?)! Maybe that’s why Jackson said that the Indian boy is one of the smartest contestants ever because he knows what weak songs suits his weak voice.

What did Simon say. I’ll repeat it from me. It pains me to say this but Sangya was good tonight…..VERY GOOD! I kid you not. I don’t like this guy but shoot….the only one with the balls (hope I can say that) to sing in Spanish! And it was good! After Blake second best performance of the night. Here’s my order from tonight’s performances:

    1- Blake
    2-Sangya
    3-Melinda
    4-Jordin
    5-Chris
    6-Haley
    7-Lakisha
    8-Phil

Take it from Mr Showbiz…..that’s the way it was :)

I wholeheartedly agree with cobbi because Sanjaya is smart for choosing song that suit his extremely weak voice. I still think that he needs to go because he is, by far, the weakest ad most annoying voice. This goes to Mr Showbiz, Simon said he “wasn’t horrible” which still means that he still sucks but not as much. “Good” did not come out of Simon’s mouth.

    WAY TO GO SANJAYA!!!!!!!!!!!

    Great job!

  14. Jan Says:

I don’t think Sanjaya has a weak voice but I do think he’s been holding back. When he’s on the home stretch running the last quarter I bet he will shine. I didn’t like him at first but now he is starting to grow on me and while I gave Blake the most votes I gave Sanjaya quite a few. There’s a half hour left before the voting’s over so I think I’ll give Jordin and Haley some. Jordin is really good and Haley, well, what can I say? I guess I agree with Simon, she’s got great legs!!!

  16. C Says:

    I forgot to say …

Sanjaya and Blake were the only good ones tonight ….

… and I don’t care ‘personally’ for Blake but I give credit, at least, to a good performance.

  17. cobbi Says:
    April 10th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

As for Haley, America this is a singing competition and not a beauty pageant. Even if Haley joins a beauty pageant, she wouldn’t win the talent competition. She got legs, that’s given but her voice, same league with the Indian boy.

  18. mr showbiz Says:
    April 10th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Sorry folks. I only meant to repeat the part that “it pains me to say this”. I was quoting only that part of what Simon said. That being said I stand by my order.

  19. MEL Says:
    April 10th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

I agree 100% with Simon tonight when he said that Haley is still on because of her looks and the fact that her outfits get skimpier each week. This is NOT a beauty pageant people! I think she is gorgeous but is so out of her league. I feel she should have been sent home LONG AGO. I think Phil is probably going this week, though. LOVED Blake’s performance tonight. My very favorites are still BLAKE, JORDIN and MELINDA. I am not a SANJAYA fan but he did better than most tonight. I don’t feel Lakisha is very safe after tonight.

Sanjaya is awsome and I cannot stand that Haley girl, she can’t sing very well, she is just all sex and for that she may as well go to Playboy, cuz as a singer, she does NOT have talent. I like the other boys too, but overall I think Jordin is the best… she should be the next American Idol with Sanjaya # !!!!!

  28. Richman Says:

My take on AI so far is this…
    Lakisha is a mini-Mandisa-she won’t win
Haley looks as good as Kat but without the voice-she won’t win
Phil, how is he still here? Out soon
Chris has a cool vibe, decent voice, top 5
Jordin is the dark horse, cute, great singer, fearless, top 3
Melinda, best voice this year but needs to stop singing jazzy, lounge type songs and sing modern songs or she won’t win..who would buy her records? Kind of like Taylor, couldn’t sell records. Top 2
Sanjaya did a good job tonight, probably the most improved so far somehow. Top 4.
Blake is one cool cat. Total package for Idol. Good singer, dancer, entertainer, contemporary. Top 2.
Melinda will win if she can sing current songs, if not Blake takes the crown.

Uhm, Melinda is okay. So is Lakisha. Somehow I don’t feel the same way when they sing as when Kelly or Carrie sing. Maybe it’s because Kelly and Carrie have already proved they are winners and this years Idol wannabes are still proving themselves. What seems the more apparent this season is the contestants are trying too hard to stay in their comfort zone. This might be partly because the viewers lose interest while they venture out.

Look at Gina. “Smile” was clearly not in Gina’s comfort zone but I gave her an “A” for effort. She did okay with it. But it was outside her comfort zone. I guess it was outside her fans comfort zones as well, so look where it got her: eliminated. Maybe that’s why they are trying to stay in their comfort zones, because there may not be any reward for doing otherwise.

Going to come up with a theme song for it soon over at http://www.voteforsanjaya.org

C’mon Tyler. Maybe it’s the 13 that should give me the clue. I can’t believe you mentioned Haley’s mole!!! Did you ever hear of Madonna? I guess you’re too young to know who she is. Madonna has a mole too but I think she is hot regardless. I think the mole might even make her hotter. Same thing goes for Haley.

I don’t think so… but she sells and people like her… is it just about her voice? I don’t think soooo… Now DO YOU PEOPLE SEE WHAT I MEANT THAT AMERICAN IDOL IS TO FIND … WITH STAR POTENTIAL… WHO GOT THOSE? not Melinda or Lakish… It’s Jordin, Blake and Sanjaya not in particular order…. people love the odds, that includes the extremes…extremely worst singers too…people love the underdogs, and they find excitement in doing the unconventional.Unfortunately, the program’s prestige and integrity has to suffer…American Idol is changing now, its not who’s the best singer, its who’s the most talked about in town….regardless.

The other guy who was really good tonight was BLAKE Lewis.

Interesting change tonight – Simon is back with his venom spitting vengeance!!!
Suggestion: he should just stick to critique of the song – not cheap personal attacks, like the ones he did on Haley.

Randy and Paula gave prepared answers for the rest of the contestants (what was Randy thinking about Lakisha, Jordin????)

Watching AI is fun and serious. Melinda has unique poise and great vocal. That’s the image when you think of her. And you remember Haley for her bubbly performance and great legs. What’s wrong with skimpy dressing if she can do it with style. Ask J Lo if you disagree. Sanjaya tried to package a signature identity but his performance is always a welcome intermission for me to sit back before AI show resumes. He is a good joker for a laugh. And some people like his jokes.

    This week’s ranking:
    Worst)Haley Scarnato (Simon is right)
    7)Phil Stacey
6)Lakisha Jones (may be in Bottom 3)
    5)Melinda Doolittle
    4)Jordin Sparks
    3)Chris Richardson
    2)Sanjaya Malakar (WTF?!)
    Best)Blake Lewis

  58. TEAM BLAKE Says:

If I hear one more person say it’s a singing competition I’m gonna SCREAM. Seriously folks, this is a competition to sell records and you don’t need to sing great to do that…just ask Britney Spears, Hillary Duff and J.Lo herself. Looks travel far in the music industy as does Charisma so don’t be nasty to Haley. She is not the best singer at all but she is certainly world’s better than Britney and her ilk and she is so pretty she is definately marketable. If she just stopped with the goofy faces and tried to be a serious artist she could make the top 3.

I predict BLAKE wins it all. He’s got a nice voice, style, charisma and moves and most important, he’s MODERN. Definately NOT Karaoke.

Melinda, Lakisha and Jordin are boring with no personal style or artistry.

  59. Ted Says:

    To “i care”

Think how you will, it only makes you look like an ignorant backwater redneck. This country was founded on the Great American Mixing Bowl and we are the better for our combination of mixed heritages. I for one am proud to be a citizen of this wonderful multi-cultural nation. I pity those of you so culturally stunted that you take pride in your vanilla non-culturally mixed heritage and lives. Your comments don’t reflect on the target, but just reflect (poorly) on you. Sanjaya is not only more American than you, but many of us would rather own up to him being American than you being American. You are just an embarrassment to this nation.

And I’m sure when Sanjaya is getting interviews in all the pop teen magazines and selling out concerts to screaming teenage groupies and selling CD’s to those same pre-pubescent puppy-love struck teenagers that he’ll really wince from the criticism from all of the minimum-wage to middle class couch potatoes still harping about him. When he’s on the Hollywood multi-million teen track he’ll really be hurt so much by your disdain. I agree that he isn’t a singer, but he’s definitely an entertainer and he knows how to sell what he’s got and make the most of it. Compared to some of the others, he’s putting a lot more effort into it and getting the votes to show some appreciate it, even if many of you don’t.

Lakisha Jones= I thought she did really good.
Chris R= I thought he did awesome.
Haley Scarnato= She was not that bad, but I still want her to go home. I can not stand her at all.
Phil Stacey=???? What can I say. I did not like it at all.
Jordin Sparks= I thought she was good.
Blake Lewis= I thought he was the best of the night.
Sanjaya Malakar= First I am going to say he looked really grown up and he is growing a mustache. I never knew he could sing in that language. He was actually one of the bests last night.
I really hope the two people to go home is Haley or Phil.

    Bottom three:

    Haley, Phil and … Lakisha.

Jordan, Melinda, and Lakisha are all similar genres, and eventually one of the three, or even all three, will end up in the bottom three, then the survivor gets to the finals. My bet is Lakisha ends up in the bottom three this week, but will be the first sent back to the seats. Lakisha and Melinda are really close in style and sing “older” than Jordan, which differentiates Jordon from the other two. Melinda is clearly better than Lakisha, so Lakisha is the bet here to be the first of the three to go.
