The American Idol cameras see all, and the contestants and judges have
to be aware that their every action can be interpreted in a million
different ways. Last week, a badly timed eye roll by Simon Cowell had
fans and media screaming that he had disrespected the victims of the
Virginia Tech tragedy. It turned out that Simon Cowell was innocent
and had not heard Chris Richardson expressing his sympathies to the
Virginia Tech victims and instead was rolling his eyes at Richardson’s
claim that he was singing nasally on purpose.
On the Idol Gives Back special, Jordin Sparks became the latest Idol star to become embroiled in controversy over the way something looked on camera. After Ryan Seacrest told Jordin that she was safe after fooling her into thinking she had been voted off, Jordin broke down into tears of relief.
As the tears streamed down Jordin’s face, Lakisha Jones reached over with a tissue and attempted to wipe the tears away. On camera, it appeared as if Jordin Sparks then rudely yanked the tissue out of Lakisha’s hand. In emails to Reality TV Magazine and on the American Idol message board, some viewers have been making a big deal out of Jordin’s apparent snatching of the tissue away from Lakisha. We have dubbed this latest raging Idol controversy as “Tissue Gate.”
Did Jordin rudely yank the tissue from Lakisha? Or did Jordin’s hand jerk by accident when she was taking the tissue and suddenly realized she was on camera? Or was Jordin just being playful when she grabbed the tissue? Hopefully, American Idol producers have a different camera angle or some audio of the incident that might clear Jordin Sparks from being a tissue snatcher. Maybe, audio will reveal Lakisha saying “Oh god, this tissue is stuck to my hand, please get it off.” Then, Jordin saying “It’s really stuck. I’m going to have to give it a pretty good tug.”
