American Idol Finalist Lakisha Jones Done In By The Dry Cleaners
May 12, 2007 12:52 AM by Joe Blackmon
In addition to being a very powerful singer, Lakisha Jones was one of
the most likable contestants ever on American Idol. Lakisha didn’t
make any pretense of trying to act like somebody she wasn’t just to get
votes, and she always came across as genuinely appreciative of the
opportunity she had on American Idol. Lakisha’s desire to make a
better life for herself and her four year old daughter was something
American Idol fans could really get behind and support.
Lakisha started out strong on American Idol and was dubbed as an early favorite to win the entire competition by the media and American Idol fans. Ultimately, Lakisha’s early success might have actually worked against her in later rounds, as fans expected her to deliver a big song every week. However, another factor that might have played a role in Lakisha’s elimination was of all things, the dry cleaners.
Lakisha Jones admitted that starting out so strong proved to be a difficult cross to bear. Lakisha esplained “When you’re singing different genres of music, and because it’s such a different style of music, those styles don’t necessarily have that big song that everybody is expecting every week. I think I did the best with what I was given, and I went out there every week and I gave it my all.”
Lakisha wasn’t surprised by her elimination. Lakisha claimed “I knew on Tuesday, I’m hoarse right now. I was hoarse on Tuesday, and I tried to sing past my hoarseness and give it my all. Of course, with American Idol, you can’t say, ‘My voice is jacked up and I can’t sing this week.’ You can’t say that, so you have to just do what you’ve got to do. I kind of knew last night, that those weren’t the best songs, but I did the best with what I was given.”
In addition to having a hoarse voice, Lakisha was also affected by a last minute wardrobe change. The blouse that she was supposed to wear during the performance show was ruined at the dry cleaners. Lakisha said “Oh God, it just messed me all up because in my mind, kind of like when you go on stage, you become this character when you’re putting on your show. I needed that blouse; it gave me that extra oomph, made me feel extra sassy.”
Even though the dry cleaners might have put a damper on Lakisha’s American Idol dreams, Lakisha’s daughter helped lift her spirits after her elimination. Lakisha explained “I was crying last night. She wiped my face and said, ‘Mommy, I’m not mad.’ I just thought that was really cute. It was almost as though she was telling me, ‘You know what, I’m proud of you. I’m not mad.’ So it works for me.”
One of the first purchases that Lakisha plans to make with her Idol money is a new home for her and her daughter. Lakisha said “I don’t ever want to rent again. I want to have a home. It don’t even have to have anything in it. I just can’t wait to get the keys and open the door and let my baby run through the house.”

Is there no other news other than Lakisha Idol? OH wait, the next article is just as enthralling. Kimberly Locke was a far better singer than Lakisha. We didn’t hear half as much news about her after she was voted out.

Lakisha was a great voice and what she is saying is that her voice was hoarse and that played on her mind, how well would she do. The blouse was just the icing on the cake. She was not going to win anyhow, Melinda will.

I agree Melinda will win, but it will be very, very CLOSE and Jordin will be Runner-UP.
Blake is toast this week and he knows his days are numbered, the only he makes the Finale is IF Melinda goes home before he goes-causing a racial backlash against him and leading to Jordin winning the Idol crown in a landslide if that happens.

Lakisha has a great voice & she will do fine after all is said & done. She didn’t need to win AI to get a good career going. As for Melinda winning, most likely she will but she will become another Rubin & disappear! Who cares if she wins or not…..great voice but not a good stage presence.
Until next season!

The poncho comment was really mean and downright nasty. Lakisha was a terrific talent! I’ve not been able to understand the negative comments I’ve read on blogs about Lakisha. She seemed like a genuinely nice person with a great voice! I also love Melinda and Blake. And there’s no doubt that Jordin is talented, but I’d rather not see her win.
