Instead of Ryan Seacrest, Homer Simpson did the initial intro for the
American Idol top three results show. After struggling to remember the
name of the show, Homer Simpson ended his intro by asking “Hey, is it
too late to vote for Fantasia?” Seacrest evidently concerned that he
might lose one of the best gigs in Hollywood was quick to criticize
Homer’s timing and did his own “This is American Idol” intro.
During pre-taped segments, the remaining three American Idol finalists visited their hometowns. Jordin Sparks visited Glendale, Arizona, where an estimated ten thousand turned out to see her. Blake Lewis visited Seattle, Washington and Bothell, Washington. Blake sang the national anthem at a Seattle Mariners game. Melinda Doolittle visited Nashville, Tennessee, where the Governor declared it Melinda Doolittle Day and Belmont University named a street Melinda Doolittle Way.
American Idol 5 finalist Elliott Yamin made a special guest appearance to perform his song “Wait For You.” Ryan Seacrest said he didn’t recognize Elliott anymore, likely because of his long, curly hair and his bright, white teeth. Randy Jackson said “Yo’ dude, it was hot.” Paula Abdul said “I’m speechless I’m so proud of you.” Simon Cowell said “Not great, I’m kidding, it was great.”
For the Ford music video, the American Idol finalists performed “Everybody Wants You.” Special guest Maroon 5 performed a censored version of “Makes Me Wonder.” After a commercial break, Seacrest revealed that almost sixty million votes were cast and that Jordin Sparks had made it through to the American Idol finale. In a shocker, Seacrest revealed that it was the end of the road for Melinda Doolittle. Blake Lewis joined Jordin Sparks in the final two.
