The Next Best Thing Premieres Tonight

May 30, 2007 12:01 AM by Joe Blackmon

From producers Peter Engel and Barry Katz ("Last Comic Standing") and
Fax Bahr and Adam Small ("The Jamie Kennedy Experiment," "Mad TV")
comes the diabolically outrageous and raucously entertaining "The Next
Best Thing: Who Is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator?," premiering
WEDNESDAY, MAY 30 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

In each episode, a panel of popular well known judges — comedians Jeffrey Ross ("Comedy Central Roasts," "The Aristocrats"), Lisa Ann Walter ("The Parent Trap," "Shall We Dance?") and Elon Gold ("Stacked," "Cheaper by the Dozen") — will use their razor sharp wit and comedic skills as they evaluate, critique and sometimes skewer celebrity impersonators based on how much they look, sound and act like the celebrity they’re impersonating. The judges will determine who will go on to compete in the next round of auditions, while America will vote for the final winning impersonator through a viewer voting system. The winner will receive a grand prize of $100,000.

Michele Merkin ("Foody Call," "Extreme Dodgeball") hosts the show, which will audition thousands of people in Los Angeles, New York City, Las Vegas and Orlando. Contestants impersonate, among others, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Johnny Depp, James Bond, Dolly Parton, Superman, George W. Bush, Neil Diamond, David Letterman and Tony Soprano. Thirty semi-finalists will perform their routines in front of the judges and a live studio audience. The ten finalists chosen by the judges will do one final performance for viewers at home, whose vote will then determine the winner and confer the $100,000 prize and the title of "The Next Best Thing."

New Wave Entertainment is a premier content development and production enterprise and one of the entertainment industry’s largest entertainment and marketing creative service agencies. TNBT excluded all non-American citizens. Many of the best USA professional celebrity impersonators and tribute acts could not agree to the contractual commitments demanded by this project so it looks like it may be the best of a somewhat limited entry?
The real “dead ringers” are all quietly going about our business being mistaken for “the real thing” and don’t need a TV “freak show” to confirm our status….

    Hey Sven.
Get off your high horse and get over your “We’re SO great and above this show” mentality. This show has high ratings and most of the talent on it ARE top of the line professionals. If you are in the UK then you can’t even SEE the show to know if it is any good so SHUT THA HELL UP you MORON. We don’t want insecure entertainers that take themselves so seriously especially from the UK on our TV shows out here anyway and that means YOU. You are a freaking LOOK ALIKE dumbass. Get over your self-glorified “we’re SO talented” ballyhoo. You IMPERSONTATE. Get a sense of humor too while you are at it.

The next Best Thing is the most manipulative dishonnest thing that I have ever experienced. They are dubbing in comments and eliminating good footage where they have decided to exclude someone from the finals after passing them on telling them that they are going to L.A. and treating them great on live taping. All in the name of making the judges look funny and entertaining. a true sign of the times Greed and nastiness. Thank God My inbox and phone have been over run today by calls and letters of love and support from our fans That is what really counts People know the scoop!!

this show is suppose to be like american idol but it’s not .
I fill a lot of thing where wrong with this show I watched it from the beging to the end.

The audtions were I felt were not fair I fill the Jennifer Lopez should had made it because of her looks,Simon Cowell should have been
    in the Finals also.
the older Elvis was Great But if you are looking for a package deal
the young Elvis was the one should to be chosen. Little Richard he
was fine but not the Greatest
    Impersonator as Little Richard.
The Tina Turner the judges chosen
Did not look perform and sound like the real Tina Turner where
drunk are did they not know who the real Tina Turner is.
the Tina Turner I know fires up the stage with her feet and sing from the top her lungs.
The Tina Turner on the Show did not. It’s Sad because The Tina Turner Impersonators I saw were a lot better then her. especially the Old Tina Turner.
