Kid Nation Chicken Killings

September 26, 2007 09:28 PM by Joe Blackmon

Kidnation_chickenIn a Kid Nation episode entitled “To Kill Or Not To Kill,” the town
journal suggested that the kids consider eating some of their chickens
for dinner.  The town council decided to let the town members vote on
whether or not to kill any chickens, and the town voted in favor of a
chicken slaughter.

Emilie told the council that she was going home if they killed any chickens, and then she locked herself in the chicken coop.  After a town discussion, Emilie finally agreed that it was ok if they killed some chickens.  Greg, who had experience working with a butcher, stepped up and chopped the heads off two chickens.

Because of cold weather, town council member Taylor huddled in bed instead of doing her job as a cook in the kitchen.  Also, the town’s water pump froze over.  Michael took the initiative of pouring hot water on the water pump, which succeeded in unfreezing the pump.

For their showdown, the districts competed in running pipe to a water wheel.  The blue district finished first and became the upper class, the red district finished second and became the merchant class, the yellow district finished third and became the cooks, and the green district finished last and became the laborers.

Because the green district didn’t finish the showdown in the allotted time, the town did not win a reward.  Host Jonathan Karsh revealed that the reward would have been a choice between a giant heated water slide or several freeze-proof water pumps.

At the town hall meeting, the majority of the town raised their hands in approval of the job that the town council was doing.  However, Sophia and Emilie voiced their concern over Taylor not pushing her team to do their jobs in the kitchen.  When host Jonathan Karsh asked if anyone wanted to go home, no one raised their hands.

The town council awarded the gold star to Michael.  Michael said “I think there’s a lot of people out there who I think deserve this star just as much as I do.  All of you could get this, and all of you have the potential.”

The chicken killing on this show was greusome. At least, on Survivor, they always cover the chicken’s head.
Kids killing animals??This show will die a quick death.
Not only is it badly scripted, the kids are SO sugary, its a feast for diabetics.
Next, the kids go after a Water Buffalo!!!!

My husband and I really like this show–I think it shows more class than any other reality show out there. You see the kids deal with issues, and guess what? They are able to more successfully deal with the issues of killing chickens than are adults! They put a moratorium on the killings, talked it out, and made a rational argument why it was necessary. Emilie wasn’t happy, but she agreed because it was what was best for the town. I think this show can teach adults a thing or two!!

I can see by the replies and the attitudes of most adults why we have such messed up youth in society. Grown ups don’t behave like mature adults looking out for the youth’s welfare. Seems to me we have many screwed up adults influencing children to behave in a way not normal for children. Children that are not influenced by these types of adults would not vote or agree to kill animals. This is all adult influence screwing up the mind of the youth today. The only real mature , responsible adults are the ones who speak out against it for the sake of what is decent and a positive influence.WE have enough violent youths and kids with bad attitudes These children need more positive influences in their lives so they don’t turn out to be ruthless and cold hearted human beings when they grow up. Kids should not have to participate in violence for the sake of screwy adults getting entertained. Reality TV is pathetic and it seems no one has enough talent to produce a real TV show anymore. The TV is bogged down with so much junk I refuse to pay for cable or satellite anymore.
Where the heck have the decent family movies and TV show gone. I miss being able to spend time with my kids watching a decent show that teaches values and has adventure. Sick society for sure when people are willing to settle for junk as entertainment over TV with some class.
