The Amazing Race Gets Started

November 04, 2007 10:33 PM by Joe Blackmon

AristaellalastplaceWritten By Jennifer Brown. Lovers, fighters, fair-players, and back-stabbers are revealed in Ireland, and the first team gets eliminated. It’s good to get back on the starting line with Phil to kick off
much-anticipated Amazing Race 12. The teams are brought to the Playboy
Mansion in Los Angeles, California by way of classic convertibles. They
line up in front of Phil where they’re reminded that the race will have
11 legs, with 8 elimination points. “The world is waiting for you,”
Phil tells them. Good luck, travel safe,GO!”

And they’re off and running – literally – to pick up their first clues. They’ll be hopping a jet and heading to Shannon, Ireland, for their first task.

Right away there are difficulties, as half of the teams get lost on the way to the airport. Tension is high, and excitement is overwhelming – several of the teams are cheering and squealing, when they should be paying attention to directions.

The first team to the airport counter is Jason & Lorena, dating couple who hasn’t yet cracked under the pressure. Another four teams follow them in, but when scientists Azaria & Hendekea approach the counter, they’re out of seats and out of luck. Or are they?

Flights can be fickle and so can The Race. As luck would have it, the first flight out is delayed and actually lands just after the second flight, giving the latter players a leg up and a chance to catch up. And some more than others – the wait in the airport gave Azaria & Hendekea a chance to form an alliance with father/daughter team, Ronald & Christina. Before taking off, Hendekea arranges to have taxis waiting for both teams at the airport in Ireland.

It doesn’t take long for competition to rear its ugly head, and Ari & Staella steal Ronald & Christina’s taxi right out from under them (a fact which Ari & Staella, by the way, think is most hilarious, for now,). This leaves Ronald & Christina scrambling, but it’s going to take a lot more than a missing taxi to rattle optimistic Ronald.

The teams’ first task is to find Teampall Bheanain, a very cool-looking teeny brick building on top of a green rolling Irish hill, and then get to InisMÃr Island by way of ferry. “The Amazing Race is a love letter to the planet,” Kate (of team Kate & Pat) says. But some racers have trouble getting to the temple. It’s raining, they have bad directions, and they’re stressed, and it isn’t long before we see this season’s bickerers come out. Nathan & Jennifer are quite the hot-headed, healthy-lunged couple, especially when things aren’t going their way.

Lorena & Jason are first to the temple, first to sign up for a time on the ferry, and first to grab a room at a Bed & Breakfast for the night. That’s gotta feel good after all that jet lag and running in the rain.

At InisMÃr, the teams get their next clue, which is to drive to Cleggan Farms, where they’ll have to ride a tandem bike.

"My emotions, are very uncontrollable,” Lorena admits to the camera. “Lorena is intense,” boyfriend Jason agrees. And we get a glimpse of that tension as the team gets lost while driving to the Farm, and Lorena is completely losing it. Two bickerers in one season? How entertaining this will be!

Kynt & Vyxsin, on the other hand, seem to just accept everything they’re dealt, even when their tandem bike breaks a chain. They’re the silent ones that everyone calls “The Freaks,” but their teamwork pays off – they fly under the radar and grab the next clue, which is a,

Road Block: “Who’s Ready to Peddle for Their Partner?”

The teams have to saddle up on a different bike for this challenge. One team member is peddling across a high-wire, carrying their teammate, who is dangling below them. The catch: they’re riding over the Atlantic Ocean! “When the bike started swaying, I don’t care who you are,it’s scary,” says TK (of team TK & Rachel). Ronald doesn’t seem to be frightened, however. He sings Danny Boy on his way across, then jumps off the bike at the other end and yells triumphantly, “How’s that for an old fart, eh?!”

On the other side of the water the teams get their next clue, which is to grab a donkey, fill its baskets with 15 pieces of peat, and lead it to the farm entrance. Sounds easy, right? Not if your donkey has a mind of its own! Some teams breeze through the task, but others are nearly buried by it. “This is the most miserable thing I’ve ever dealt with in my life,” laments Nathan, whose donkey is going nowhere. Neither is Ari’s & Staella’s donkey. They’re getting passed by other teams left and right,

The first to finish the task is TK & Rachel, and they get their next clue, which is to find the Pit Stop at Connemara Heritage Center.

There are missed turns and bad directions and spills and stubborn donkeys and all manner of disappointments and frustrations, but eventually everyone makes it to the Pit Stop, in this order:

1st – Azaria & Hendekea (who win an awesome trip for two to Alberta, Canada)

2nd – Kynt & Vyxsin

3rd – TK & Rachel

4th – Lorena & Jason (not fighting anymore!)

5th – Nicolas & Grandpa Donald

6th – Shana & Jennifer (whose plan to flirt their way to the finish line didn’t really pan out on this leg)

7th – Christina & Ronald (who jumps and yells, “Who’s your daddy?!”)

8th – Kate & Pat

9th – Marianna & Julia

10th – Nathan & Jennifer (lovey-dovey now that their donkey got them to the mat on time)

11th – Ari & Staella, who are eliminated. Ari, remembering the taxi they stole from Ronald & Christina at the airport says, “Karma came back and bit us in the ass.” Staella, who chooses to sum it up more succinctly, says simply, “This sucks.”

Next on Amazing Race 12: Ronald & Christina reach a breaking point. Grandpa Donald goes Tarzan.

And we’re off for another season of TAR. I like Kynt and Vyxsin. They did not panic or breakdown when their bike’s chain broke. They just pushed it. Smart. Ronald singing Danny Boy was really funny and cute.
Note to future Racer’s it’s sometimes not wise to hijack another team’s taxi. Karma will bite. It seems that Karma phrase is popular with teams who try to mess with the Taxi Cab Gods.

Why no all male teams this year (other than grandfather/grandson)? The Goth couple are interesting, but there are too many “dating couples” that aren’t interesting and just seem to argue and call each other “baby”. TAR needs more interesting and memorable contestants (remember the hippie guys,…or the clowns..???)

I think the reason why there is no alpha male teams because the producers feel it should be an open playing field. The past seasons were dominated by strong male teams like Dave and Jeff, Eric and Jeremy, and Tyler and James.

I’d have to agree that Kynt & Vyxsin treated each other very well which is always the trait I value the most in any team. Most people that I play with in a fantasy Amazing Race game picked Kate & Pat to loose out in the first episode. Surpisingly, they did pretty well. I was a little surprised that we didn’t hear more from them, however.
