With only three couples left, it’s still wide open as to who will win
Dancing with the Stars 5. The final three couples are Marie Osmond
& Jonathan Roberts, Melanie Brown & Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and
Helio Castroneves & Julianne Hough. These three couples will face
off in the Dancing with the Stars 5 finals on Monday, November 26, 2007
at 8PM ET on ABC.
For the last three seasons of Dancing with the Stars, a male celebrity has ultimately won the contest. In fact if you go by the dance-off results from season one, then a male celebrity has won every season.
In the first season of Dancing with the Stars, Kelly Monaco initially won the competition, but ABC held a dance-off in response to viewer complaints. In the dance-off, John O’ Hurley came out on top. Drew Lachey won the second season, Emmitt Smith won the third season, and Apolo Anton Ohno won the fourth season.
With the fifth season of Dancing with the Stars, there are two female celebrities but only one male celebrity left in the final three. Will the numbers advantage lead to a female celebrity winning? Or will it split up the vote and virtually assure that Helio Castroneves takes the title?
Helio Castroneves was an early surprise favorite in the competition. Helio started strong, faded a little bit in the middle, but has rebounded in the final weeks. Helio is also partnered with Julianne Hough who was part of the winning couple last season. Cheryl Burke won two seasons in a row, so it could be Julianne Hough’s turn to pull off back-to-back victories.
The biggest challenge to Helio Castroneves claiming the trophy is likely Melanie Brown. Of all the contestants, Melanie Brown has likely grown the most during the competition. She has picked up steam as the weeks have gone by, and she has really shined during her most recent performances. The fact that Melanie has peaked at just the right time in the competition could very well build enough momentum to carry her to victory.
The longshot to win the competition is Marie Osmond. While Marie Osmond has been a consistently good dancer, she hasn’t been in the same league as Helio and Melanie in regards to the judges’ scores. On the official Dancing with the Stars message board, many viewers are protesting that Marie Osmond doesn’t even belong in the finals based on dance ability alone. However, Marie Osmond shouldn’t be counted out. After all, are older female viewers that make up a large part of Dancing with the Stars viewer demographic going to vote for a Spice Girl, a race car driver, or the beloved singer/entertainer that they grew up watching on TV?
The reality is that this season any of the final three could wind up taking home the Dancing with the Stars 5 trophy. If one of the three has a breakout dance on the finals like Drew Lachey did in season two, then they will likely claim the title.
