During American Idol 6, the producers of American Idol undertook a very ambitious project to raise money for some very worthwhile charities. Because the project was such a massive undertaking, it was unclear if it would ever be repeated again. However, FOX has now officially announced that Idol Gives Back will return for American Idol 7.

The first Idol Gives Back raised $75 million for both U.S. and international charities. The charities helped support underprivileged children in disadvantaged areas across America. Children were provided with medial care, food and grocery products, health and life skills, literacy programs and obesity prevention. Funds were also directed to Africa to help battle poverty through various health and education programs.

American Idol executive prouder Simon Fuller came up with the idea for Idol Give Back, and many famous entertainers participated in the program. Ryan Seacrest and Ellen DeGeneres hosted the special, along with American Idol judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. At the end of the special, the top six American Idol finalists performed Bono and Dave Stewart’s specially commissioned song “American Prayer.”

The two-hour American Idol 7: Idol Gives Back concert and fundraiser will air on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 from 8PM to 10PM ET live/PT tape-delayed on FOX.
