In reality TV, the year 2007 might be best remembered as the year that American Idol slipped. And by slipped, we mean it still dominated the competition, but just a little bit less so than in previous seasons. After two back-to-back stellar years, the talent level took a dip and so did the ratings. We’re confident that American Idol producers have learned from their mistake and that the franchise will be back stronger than ever in 2008.
Because of Idol’s stumble, a couple other shows passed it by on our top ten list this year. What did we select as the number one reality TV show of the year? Well, the Donatos helped to make it a banner year for Big Brother. Yes, there were times when it appeared as if the producers might be meddling just a little bit too much in the outcome of Big Brother 8, but the father/daughter story of Evel Dick and Daniele Donato certainly made for good television.
Another reality TV show that excelled this year was Dancing with the Stars. Even though the Dancing with the Stars 5 final performances were a little bit of a letdown, the overall quality of performances took a step up with Dancing with the Stars 4 & 5. It was obvious both seasons that many of the celebrities took the show seriously and were dedicated to doing their best.
So You Think You Can Dance also took a step up this year with the most talented group of contestants in the show’s history. The third season proved to be the charm for this show and it is firmly entrenched as one of the best shows of the Summer.
Even on a bad year, American Idol makes our top five. Sure, we were disappointed that the most exciting contestant this year on American Idol was Sanjaya’s hair, but Paula, Randy, Simon, and Ryan still kept us entertained. It’s a testament to what a well-produced show that American Idol is that it can be entertaining even when the singers aren’t.
