On this week’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Ty Pennington and his team pay a visit to the Voisine family in Manchester, New Hampshire. The Voisine family consists of Reynald and Casey Voisine and their four children. The Voisine family lost their home to heavy flooding in May of 2006.
Even though the Voisine’s house wasn’t in a flood zone and there was a four-lane highway between their home and the river, four days of heavy rain brought water into their house. The water soaked carpeting and rose to the level of their electrical outlets. After Reynald shut off power to his home to eliminate electrocution risk, the fire department came to help, but the firemen got stuck in the house. Reynald’s Dad eventually had to rescue the family and the rescue workers by backing his four-wheel drive pick-up truck up to the house.
The house was declared a total loss by FEMA, so the Voisine family was forced to demolish the house and apply for a FEMA loan. However, after the house had been demolished, FEMA denied the loan based on a poor credit rating because of outstanding medical bills for Reynald. Now, the Voisine family has to pay both their monthly mortgage on the demolished property plus rent on an apartment. FEMA did provide some rent assistance, but that money is about to run out.
The design team that will help Ty Pennington build a new house for the Voisine family includes Michael Moloney, Tanya McQueen, Paul DiMeo and John Littlefield. Local builder R.J. Moreau Communities and hundreds of volunteers and workers will also be helping, while the family vacation in the Caribbean on a private yacht.
In a special celebrity appearance, country music star Rodney Atkins will perform his song, “These Are My People.” Extreme Makeover Home Edition airs a special two hour episode on Sunday, January 27 from 8 PM to 10 PM ET on ABC.
