Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and the Hughes Family

February 17, 2008 09:05 PM by DA Southern

Extreme Makeover Hughes FamilyTy and the designers were in the great state of Kentucky as we see them watching the races at what looked to be the Kentucky Derby. Ty announced the continuation of the 50-State tour and that the Hughes family, consisting of Parents, Patricia and Patrick John, and kids, Patrick Henry, Cameron and Jessie, were this week’s recipient of the new home.

Ty Pennington and designers Paul DiMeo, Michael Moloney, Eduardo Xol, Ed Sanders and Didiayer watched the application video of the Hughes family and the Hughes’ eldest son, nineteen year-old Patrick Henry, who was born blind and without the ability to fully straighten his arms and legs, leaving him unable to walk.

Despite circumstances that seem overwhelming, Patrick Henry has exhibited great strength and a positive attitude in achieving his goals. Not only is he an awe-inspiring pianist, having played since he was nine months old, but he also excels at the trumpet and singing. Patrick is a member of the University of Louisville School of Music Marching and Pep Band, and with help from his father, Patrick Henry tirelessly maneuvers his wheelchair through the formations with the other 200 band members. Patrick has been honored for his triumphs and has been featured on ESPN, Good Morning America, World News with Charles Gibson and in Sports Illustrated and was also the winner of the 2006 Disney Wide World of Sports Spirit Award.

Being in a wheelchair, it’s difficult for Patrick Henry to maneuver through the Hughes’ home. The chair has done extensive damage to the walls, and the house is now desperately in need of help. With a big hole in their bank account resulting from Patrick John’s decision to stay at home and tend to his son’s special needs, home repairs are the last priority on the Hughes’ agenda. Now it’s up to Ty and the gang to give this energetic and supportive family the dream home they deserve.

Day one at 7:51 AM, Ty and the gang rolled up to rouse the unsuspecting family to get the love train started. Ty did a quick meet-and-greet and decided to hold off on the vacation plans until after the home tour. Ty went in with dad and Patrick Henry and saw how cramped the home was, for not only Patrick Henry, but for the rest of the family.

Didiayer was in the boy’s bedroom with Jessie and discovered that Jessie was a photographer at heart and would love to experience his own space while Paul was in with son, Cameron, and discovered that music runs in the family as Cameron was quite the musician himself and an Elvis lover.

Ty was talking to Patrick Henry and discovered that the 19-year old actually saw his blindness as an ability, and that he only sees what is on the inside of a person because the outside of a person means nothing to him. Ty was amazed as to the positive outlook of Patrick Henry and Ty discovered that his relationship with his father was a true source of inspiration to him.

Ty, Patrick Henry and dad, Patrick John, went to the marching band field to determine the field’s overall condition and Ty discovered that the field was in dire need of some renovation as well. As Ty watched the marching band practice and saw how welcomed and adored Patrick Henry was to the marching band, he then announced that the marching band field was going to be redone too.

Ty then announced that the devoted family was headed to London, England and that designer, Ed Sanders, was going to be their tour guide, since he was from there. And here all this time I assumed that Ed was the Geico Gekko because I have never actually seen them together at the same time.

Day 2 at 8:33 AM the builders of builder Elite Homes and the hundreds of volunteers arrived to start the demo and build of the new Hughes’ home. Ty donned the camera for the London-bound family to show them the destruction of their former home and after an emotional appeal form the builders and volunteers started the destruction. Ty arranged a musical demotion for Patrick Henry with a special guest, Christian singer, Sandi Patti, who sang as the musicians played music as the home was demolished.

Day 3 began for us at 9:11 AM but the framing of the home was pretty much done. Michael guided us through a quick tour of the 3300 square foot home and announced that the home would truly have a Kentucky flair. Didiayer was already well into her photographer design studio bedroom for Jessie and Paul was seen jamming with some of the crew as they sang about the Elvis-designed guitar room for Cameron.

Ty and Eduardo were tackling the athletic field for the marching band project and a million more volunteers showed up for this project as they finally starter the field transformation that was so important for Patrick Henry.

Day 4 at 10:09 AM Michael again toured us in the home and explained how many bricks were being used in the home to maintain the Kentucky flavor. Didiayer was checking her photographer room for Jessie and Ty was at the local music store for Patrick Henry’s secret room. Michael was at a local artist shop who was, too, blind and deaf but created artwork that he donated for the Hughes’ home and Eduardo was working like mad to get the marching field done.

Ty called the family in London and sent them to see the musical, The Lion King, and also to meet the cast. A real thrill for Patrick Henry, and for the viewing audience as well, was when he warmed up The Lion King cast and sang for the cast as well. It truly was an amazing sight.

Back at the ranch, Didiayer was taking pictures for Jessie’s room and Michael was talking to some of Patrick Henry’s band mates and was amazed how respected he was among the band members. Eduardo was showing off some of the vast improvements on the marching field and Paul was off to Nashville to make some guitars for Cameron’s guitar-themed room. Ty and Michael were at the weekly shopfest at the Sears superstore and were seen racing to see who could finish their shopping first with a cheering crowd behind them.

Day 5 at 6:44 AM with Ty explaining the texture-rich room for Patrick Henry with that jokester, Paul, snaking a sewer camera through an open space in the door to spy on Ty and Ty then grabbed it. I guess that was the Ty-larious moment of the night! Paul was then seen with the builder as he explained that a special model of the home was being built for Patrick Henry to know what the home looks like.

Day 6 at 8:27 AM saw Ty looking over the frantic rush for the home to be completed and his secret project of Patrick Henry’s room, which was actually an apartment for Patrick Henry with a voice-activated door. Ed was seen talking to the family in London and told them that they were being generously given three more years of the Disney Vacation club, Eduardo was seen putting the finishing touches on the athletic field and the home was finally being put together with the furniture for the family’s homecoming.

Homecoming Day and Ty showed the new field off to the marching band and the Hughes family as they arrived home. Ty told Patrick Henry about the new field improvements and presented him with a new trumpet before sending the family home the next morning.

The next morning the family arrived at the new home and Patrick was amazed at the sounds of the cheering crowds. Ty and the family immediately told the bus driver to “move that bus” and Patrick Henry was presented with the model of the home for him to visualize the home as the others viewed it in disbelief.

Patrick Henry was immediately impressed how easy he could move around in the home as the other members explained the features of the home and they gave Patrick Henry the different textures to experience. Jessie was first into his photography room and was amazed as to the detail that Didiayer put into it and that there was only one bed. Jessie’s guitar room was an incredible experience as actual guitar strings were embedded in the floor. Patricia and Patrick John then went into their personal sanctuary that was the master suite and realized that they finally had their own space to get away from it all.

Ty then gathered the family for the secret room, Patrick Henry’s apartment attached to the home. The room had all of the comforts that would allow Patrick Henry to be self-sufficient and Ty even had a recording studio put into his apartment for him to record his music. Ty even had a brand new all-terrain wheelchair with sensors for Patrick Henry and a baby grand in his apartment for him to record his music.

Ty gave the traditional, “Welcome home, Hughes family, welcome home” and in one of the most incredible finishes ever seen on Extreme, Patrick Henry played an original composition on the piano, and it was so moving that I was, I mean, most of the cast were seen bawling as the credits rolled and Patrick said that if you want to achieve a goal you just need to believe.

You always do a fine job here, but Patrick Henry did not sing an “original composition” at the end. It was an already published song, which names escapes me right now. BUT, it was absolutely perfect that he sang it and gave it a whole new meaning.

The song was “I Believe” by Brooks and Dunn. Also, I just read where Patrick Henry has a CD available through the school, maybe? Or on his own Web site. What a wonderful family.
