American Idol host Ryan Seacrest is always attempting to find clever new ways to tell American Idol contestants that their dreams have been crushed. Sometimes he takes the direct approach. Other times he makes one contestant think they are going home, only to switch suddenly and eliminate another contestant.
On the most recent American Idol results show, Seacrest pulled the old switch job on the youngest contestant still in the competition. As eighteen year old Kady Mallow and sixteen year old Alaina Whitaker waited on center stage, Seacrest announced, “Kady [long pause], you are safe.” Both Kady and Alaina reacted in shock when they realized that Seacrest had said Kady was safe instead of going home, which meant Alaina had been eliminated.
After hugging Kady Malloy, Alaina Whitaker broke down into tears and sobbed, “I can’t sing. Sorry, this is embarrassing.” Even though Seacrest had delivered the crushing blow, he quickly changed his tune and rushed in to comfort the distraught contestant. Seacrest hugged Alaina, assuring her, “It’s ok. It’s alright.” Seacrest continued, “I just want to talk about the reality of what you’ve done and what you’ve accomplished. From meeting you, you know across the country, we saw thousands and thousands of people, you made it to a very small group on this stage, and almost nobody gets to do that. You’re singing with these girls, and every week somebody has to go on this show. No matter how good you are, somebody’s got to go every single week until we get to the end.”
After a round of applause from the audience and words of encouragement from Paula Abdul, Seacrest told Alaina, “You said that this is embarrassing, and this is not embarrassing at all. You should be very, very proud of yourself. Very proud, congratulations.” Seacrest gave Alaina the choice of if she wanted to sing a final song or not. As Alaina shook her head and started to decline, the other American Idol girls voiced their support. With the other girls joining Alaina on stage, she managed to make it through a farewell performance of “Hopelessly Devoted To You.”
