Fans who kept their TV’s tuned to ABC after Oprah’s Big Give’s season premiere last Sunday were treated to another surprising feel-good premiere – Here Come the Newlyweds. In this new reality show, seven teams of newlywed couples engage in relationship-testing challenges to vie for a huge $300,000 (and growing every week) cash prize.
Reality TV Magazine recently caught up with one couple, Crystal and Johnnie Moutra, to get the skinny on this hot new show.
For the Moutras, timing has been everything. The couple, who got engaged at a Rockets game (where they’d had their first date, first kiss, insert “Awww” here), and is approaching their one-year anniversary, just barely made it to the Newlyweds casting call. Johnnie says a co-worker told him about the casting call, which was to take place the very next day. It was a rainy day, and the couple almost didn’t go. But despite the rain, Johnnie and Crystal decided to go for it after all.
“We wanted to be on TV,” Johnnie says of the couple’s decision to try out for the show. “One of the main reasons was because we wanted to show everyone that a young couple can make it in a marriage. There’s a lot of divorces going on these days.”
“A lot of young girls and boys think they know what love is and they really don’t,” Crystal adds, emphasizing that she hopes young people watching the show will see what needs to be looked for when contemplating marriage.
For the young couple, the timing of the show couldn’t be better. Johnnie and Crystal currently live in a house with 10 people and share one car between the two of them. Although they have hopes of winning the money so they can buy themselves a house and a car, they admit that being away from their large family is their biggest challenge during the show.
“We all work together in one place, so not being around them was the only thing that we missed,” Johnnie says.
But the Moutras are determined to keep their good humor, no matter what. In fact, for Johnnie, humor is a big deal – something he showed audiences on the premiere. “He always knows when it’s a good time and when it’s a bad time to be humorous,” Crystal says of her jokester husband. “It’s one of the things I love about him.” In fact, the team believes that Johnnie’s natural comedic side will keep them in the game longer. “They won’t vote us off, because they’re going to miss us if they do that,” Johnnie jokes.
And if they don’t win the money? The Moutras aren’t worried about that.
“A lot of people are breaking up and getting divorces because of money. It’s not going to be an issue with us. We’ll know how to handle it,” Johnnie says. “Whether we win the money or not, we’re going to be alright.”
Here Come the Newlyweds airs Sundays at 10:00 PM (ET) on ABC.
