While viewers might have seen a kinder, gentler Simon Cowell during the audition rounds, the mean Simon Cowell was definitely back in time for the semifinalists rounds. From telling one semifinalist that they weren’t going to be able to make a career out of singing to calling another grotesque, Cowell has not held back.
On the American Idol top eight girls performance show, Simon Cowell said that Kady Malloy had a “massive lack of personality.” When asked about Cowell’s criticism, Malloy said, “Well, you know, I never really understood what he was saying. Maybe one day I’ll understand, but I still don’t really get it.”
In regard to the criticism that he received from Simon Cowell, Luke Menard said, “Simon never gave me one compliment on camera, so I learned to really tune out his criticism. He really didn’t give me much constructive criticism, it was pretty much just degrading stuff. So, I just took that with a grain of salt, and I just kind of tuned him out.”
Danny Noriega faced some of the harshest insults from Simon Cowell and was the recipient of even having one of his performances labeled as grotesque. Noriega said, “I was kind of shocked because I didn’t know what grotesque meant for a second there, and then I was pretty upset, because I thought he was going to kind of like me, or say something a little positive, but yeah, it was a bit on the negative side. So, I was kind of upset, but you know, you brush it off after.”
Even with these harsh criticisms, some of the American Idol semifinalists still hold Simon Cowell up as their favorite judge. Asia’h Epperson said, “I loved all the judges, but I would have to say my favorite would be Simon. Probably, because he, you know everyone says he’s kind of bitter, but he knows what he’s talking about. He is a professional. I think he gives very constructive criticism, even though he could probably word it a little differently sometimes, but probably him, because he’s probably the most harsh and makes you want to do the best that you can do.”
