American Idol: Should Ryan Seacrest Apologize To Michael Johns?

April 13, 2008 08:31 PM by Joe Reality

Ryan Seacrest And Michael JohnsMove over Simon Cowell. The most hated man on American Idol now appears to be Ryan Seacrest. After Seacrest’s cruel tease during the American Idol results show to make Michael Johns think he might have a second chance since it was Idol Gives Back week, many American Idol fans have been expressing their outrage.

On American Idol message boards and blogs, some fans have been calling for Seacrest to be kicked off the show while other fans have been demanding that Seacrest apologize to Michael Johns. While Seacrest does have his defenders who point out that he was likely just reading off a scripted card, the overwhelming response seems to be that Seacrest went too far.

So what does Michael Johns think about Ryan Seacrest’s cruel trick? In a media conference call, Johns said, “Look, I get the television aspect of this competition, but it was tough. I thought okay, I’m going home and then he did that and I was, ‘Wait a second, maybe I’m not going home. Maybe they’re just having a good laugh.’ I hadn’t been in the bottom three before, so I was thinking that was a possibility. When reality set in and Ryan gave me a look as if to say, ‘Look, I am so sorry I had to do that,’ but you get it. I don’t hold it against Ryan or anything. After this I’m hopefully going to make a great record. It won’t be the last you see of me.”

Since Michael Johns doesn’t hold any grudges against Ryan Seacrest, should American Idol viewers? Should Ryan Seacrest apologize for the way he handled Michael John’s elimination? As unusual as it may sound, there is a strong argument that could be made that the way Ryan Seacrest’s mean trick could actually be the best thing that could have happened for Michael Johns. Because the comment came off as cruel, it garnered sympathy for Michael Johns from millions of viewers, which could help him as he continues to pursue his career.

HI EVERYONE!!!!! I think just as last year during amer. idol gives back, this year, no one should have been sent home. the comments should NOT have been made. it was WRONG… mj has never been in bottom3, NEVER, not ONCE!! then when he is..ryan says “…etc…last year no one went home… …carly and syesha go sit down… …your safe… …well mj your not your leaving us tonight…etc…”
i, just like milions of other fans and aussie posse were SHOCKED!!!!

    Think About These QUESTIONS:
last year no one went home during idol gives back, why this year???
mj has never been in bottom3, NOT ONCE, NEVER, why now now???
why did ryan say those comments??? he should not have…it was heart wrenching it got fans and mjs hopes up…

    Lets Be Heard

Cruel, yes, but it’s TV!! I’m sorry Michael Johns. I’m a fan and I let you down. I thought, “he’s great and not in trouble yet. People will vote for him.”. I was complacent and should have voted. Now I will miss watching him and I’m sorry for that too.

Yes, that is one of the great ironies of American Idol…If Simon (or in this cast Secrest?) humiliates you enough, it will actually turn you into a star (as it did with William Hung, and the kid he called a “bush baby”), as long as you are cute enough or unique enough. Unfortunately, if you’re not cute or “unique” everyone else just starts making fun of you too :/ I will think the whole controversey will help Johns a bit…at least for the immediate future. Here is another fine article on American Idol 7
