American Idol Guys Sing Mariah Carey Better Than The Girls

April 15, 2008 06:25 PM by Joe Reality

David Cook On Mariah Carey WeekTo open the American Idol top 7 performance show, Ryan Seacrest reminded viewers of last week’s shocking elimination of Michael Johns. Mariah Carey appeared as a mentor for the finalists, and the theme for the week was songs by Mariah Carey.

David Archuleta sang “When You Believe.” Randy Jackson said, “You can sing anything.” Paula Abdul said, “It must feel great for Mariah to be able to hear your interpretation of the song, and I know she was beaming, because you made her proud.” Simon Cowell said, “I thought it was very, very good.”

Carly Smithson sang “Without You.” Randy Jackson said, “It was pretty good.” Paula Abdul said, “I actually liked that you showed some vocal restraint.” Simon Cowell said, “I thought that it was an ok version.”

Syesha Mercado sang “Vanishing.” Randy Jackson said, “You did a good job on it all things considered.” Paula Abdul said, “You’re smart because you picked a song that not many people know.” Simon Cowell said, “Technically, it was very, very good indeed. Having said that, I’m not sure at this stage in the competition that I would have chosen a song which not many people know about.”

Brooke White sang “Hero.” Randy Jackson said, “The bridge kind of threw me a little bit.” Paula Abdul said, “Every ounce of you is totally authentic to who you are.” Simon Cowell said, “It was a bit like ordering a hamburger and only getting the bun. In other words, the vital ingredient, the bit in the middle was missing.”

Kristy Lee Cook sang “Forever.” Randy Jackson said, “You definitely started stepping up towards the end.” Paula Abdul said, “I’m like blown away.” Simon Cowell said, “You didn’t give me chills. I think you managed with what you could.”

David Cook sang “Always Be My Baby.” Randy Jackson said, “That was the most brilliant performance yet.” Paula Abdul said, “That song could be in a movie soundtrack right now.” Simon Cowell said, “It was original, it was daring, it stood out by a mile.”

Jason Castro sang “I Don’t Wanna Cry.” Randy Jackson said, “I felt like I was at a weird beach luau.” Paula Abdul said, “I would love to be at that luau listening all night long.” Simon Cowell said, “It was a cool version. I’ve got to tell you by the way, the guys completely won the night.”

Even though it might seem logical that the girls would have the upper hand over the guys with Mariah Carey songs, that did not turn out to be the case. As Simon Cowell called it, the boys gave the performances of the night. David Archuleta, David Cook, and Jason Castro should all be safe. Any of the four girls could be next to go home. However, as the girl who went the earliest in the show, Carly Smithson is likely at the greatest risk

I was surprised they let Carly sing Without You, as it’s really a Harry Nilsson song. Wondering why Simon seems to love Jason so much. I was with Randy that it sounded like a luau.
