American Idol Once Again Proves To Be A Popularity Contest

April 23, 2008 09:36 PM by Joe Reality

Syesha Mercado And Carly SmithsonIf there was ever any question that popularity plays a huge role in who stays and who goes on American Idol, then the latest American Idol results show should erase any doubt. Even though Jason Castro had the worst performance of his American Idol run and Brooke White forgot the words to her song and had to restart, neither one of them fell into the bottom two.

Why did neither of them fall into the bottom two? Because in a season of American Idol where Simon Cowell has called out the contestants for lacking personality, Jason and Brooke are two of the most likable and popular contestants. As Simon Cowell put it, “Brooke, I think watching you back last night, I’m not surprised you’re there because you made yourself human, you know, and everyone makes mistakes. Jason, you weren’t very good, but you were charming.”

Even though Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson had two of their best performances of the competition during Andrew Lloyd Webber week, both of them wound up in the bottom two. When asked for his opinion, Randy Jackson said, “I am shocked. It must be a bit of a popularity week in the vote, Ryan. Those two sang really good last night.”

Randy Jackson’s comments were right on target. After Syesha’s performance of “One Rock N’ Roll Too Many,” the judges lavished praise on Syesha, calling her a “Broadway star” and “sexy.” After Carly’s performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Simon Cowell called it, “one of his favorite performances of the night.”

In a way, because Syesha and Carly often came across as polished and professional singers, it made it more difficult for viewers to relate to them. On the other hand, Jason Castro’s laid back approach and Brooke White’s human error in forgetting the words made them contestants with which viewers could relate.
