American Idol judge Simon Cowell was not always kind to Carly Smithson. Right from her very first season 7 San Diego audition, Simon Cowell challenged the singer. Carly Smithson had previously auditioned during season five, but she had been disqualified due to Visa issues. After Carly sang “I’m Every Woman,” Simon Cowell told her that it wasn’t as good as two years ago.
However, Carly didn’t agree with Simon Cowell’s assessment. Carly explained, “You know I’ve already been disqualified and I had such a great audition in Las Vegas you know they loved me. And then I come and I just felt like it was like I had to beat myself almost. And I walked into the room and I gave it everything I had and it was actually really amusing, because you guys obviously haven’t seen the footage of the Las Vegas audition, but I asked to see because I was so confused as to like that wasn’t as good as two years ago. And I watched it back and it’s funny, everyone says it’s like exactly the same. It was no different. It was the same song as well you know, because I walked in the room and I was about to sing something else and they said to sing the same song because they had liked it so much from before. I don’t know, it’s like he set this high bar for me straight away.”
Carly Smithson continued, “And I was like trying to beat myself every week you know to be better and better and better, and I felt that I did a great job. I gave it everything that I had, and I was satisfied for myself with my performances. I guess Simon just had a different idea in his mind, and I’m not sure he really wanted me to be who I am. You know I don’t think they liked the whole you know kind of pop rock you know harsh idea that I have about myself.”
Despite the tough words from Simon Cowell, Carly Smithson felt that he ultimately had her best interest at heart. Carly Smithson explained, “I can’t please everybody, and you know he’s only one person. And you know he truly said to me the other night that he truly believes in me and he thinks that I’m very good, and he has high hopes for me. And you know I think all of his criticism wasn’t necessarily negative. I think he just really wanted me to do well you know, and I gave it everything that I could. I made it to sixth place. I’m truly happy with that; I really am. I think it’s fantastic.”
