On the American Idol top 5 performance show, each finalist sang two songs. The theme of the show was songs by Neil Diamond. Jason Castro sang “Forever In Blue Jeans” and “September Morn.” After Jason’s second performance, Randy Jackson said, “It was just ok.” Paula Abdul said, “I feel like it’s safe, and you need to get out of your comfort zone.” Simon Cowell said, “For the last two weeks, this is not the Jason we put into the competition.”
David Cook sang “I’m Alive” and “All I Really Need Is You.” After David Cook’s second performance, Randy Jackson said, “Again, you rocked the house.” Paula Abdul said, “I feel like I’m already looking at the American Idol.” Simon Cowell said, “I thought the first song was ok. I thought the second song was brilliant.”
Brooke White sang “I’m A Believer” and “I Am I Said.” After Brooke’s second performance, Randy Jackson said, “Nice job.” Paula Abdul said, “Everyone loves who you are, and that works.” Simon Cowell said, “This is the Brooke we like, sitting behind the piano, singing a very good song.”
David Archuleta sang “Sweet Caroline” and “America.” After David Archuleta’s second performance, Randy Jackson said, “Another good performance, baby.” Paula Abdul said, “I love you, I love you, you were brilliant, have fun.” Simon Cowell said, “Well, David, that was a smart choice of song.”
Syesha Mercado sang “Hello Again” and “Thank The Lord For The Night Time.” After Syesha’s second performance, Randy Jackson said, “I think you’re finally realizing who you are.” Paula Abdul said, “On your second song, it shows a whole different side, and you are equally, that’s your performance theatrical place.” Simon Cowell said, “You are a very good actress stroke singer, you know. I think however, you may be in trouble tonight.”
While Neil Diamond week proved to be somewhat disappointing, it also proved to be one of American Idol’s strangest shows ever. The strange part came in when Ryan Seacrest asked the judges to provide brief feedback after all the finalists had completed singing their first song. In one of her most unusual American Idol moments ever, Paula Abdul offered feedback on both of Jason Castro’s songs, even though Jason Castro had only sung one song at that point.
Based on the judges’ feedback on both of his performances, it would at first appear that Jason Castro might be next to go home. However, Jason has a huge fan base that has kept him safe in previous weeks. Simon Cowell probably got it right when he said that Syesha Mercado might be in trouble. Even though she was not the worst singer of the night, her previous trips to the bottom three and bottom two seem to indicate that she might have one of the smallest fan bases of the remaining contestants.
